HOUSING DAY AT THE CAPITOL & LEGISLATIVE RECEPTION BATC’s advocacy work is more important than ever. We’re growing our influence with our elected representatives and Housing Day at the Capitol is a key element of our strategy, inviting members to connect with their legislators. In 2017 we’re energizing the event with a partnership with the Minnesota Association of Realtors®. Then, for those who joined us on the “hill” and for all other BATC and Realtor members, we’ll be hosting a very special reception and inviting legislators to join us.

Twin Cities Residential Construction Hits 9-Year High With the help of a surge in single-family construction, June saw the most housing permits pulled in a single month since 2007. Comparing June monthover-month permits were up 19 percent compared to 2015 and single-family permits rose by 24 percent. So far, 2016 is setting the strongest pace since 2007 with 2,507 permits pulled yearto-date.

Permits

According to data compiled by the Keystone Report for the Builders Association of the Twin Cities (BATC), there were 571 permits issued for a total of 610 units during four comparable weeks in the month of June 2016. “We’re definitely starting to see the low inventory of existing single-family housing impact new construction,” said Meg Jaeger, the Builders Association of the Twin Cities 2016 President. “We’re hopeful that this trend will continue as more home buyers see the benefits of building new.”

“This month’s uptick in production is an indicator that the housing market continues to move forward,” said NAHB Chairman Ed Brady, a home builder and developer from Bloomington, Ill. “At the same time, builders are adding inventory at a cautious pace as they face lot shortages and regulatory hurdles.”

Single-family housing starts rose 4.4 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 778,000 units in June while multifamily production ticked up 5.4 percent to 411,000 units.

Single-family permits edged up 1 percent to a rate of 738,000 while multifamily permits rose 2.5 percent to 415,000.
