Invitation

Environmental contamination by trace elements (TE), in particular by heavy metals and metalloids, is a major threat to the quality of food, water and thus ultimately to human health in many parts of the world. On the other hand, various trace elements are also essential at low concentrations for humans, animals, plants and other organisms. The ICOBTE is the most important conference on the behaviour, fate impacts and management of trace elements in the environment. It generally attracts around 500 participants from universities and research institutions, government agencies, NGOs and industry from all around the world. Given Switzerland’s pioneering role and longstanding experience in coping with environmental pollution, the conference theme is «Management of trace elements in the environment». The local organizers of the 14th ICOBTE are members of the Department of Environmental Systems Science of ETH Zurich. ETH Zurich is among the top ten universities in the world, and even among the six top universities in the field of environmental sciences according to the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2016. The ICOBTE provides an excellent opportunity for sponsors to connect to leading national and international scientists, to meet graduate students and early-career researchers looking for future career opportunities, and to interact with regulators and other stakeholders. Sponsors are in particular invited to join the travel award program of the conference through which we support the participation of scientists from low-income countries. This document describes the available sponsoring opportunities. Program

The general topics of ICOBTE 2017 include • Biogeochemical behaviour of trace elements (TE) in the environment – from sorption, transport and transformation processes to global cycles • Interactions of organisms with TE: from molecular mechanisms to ecological effects • (Eco)toxicology of TE: effects of environmental TE contamination on health and ecosystem functions • Monitoring, risk assessment and management of TE in the environment • Micronutrient deficiencies and biofortification • TE radionuclides in the environment Several excursions will be offered in which case examples are shown illustrating how Switzerland strives to prevent new soil contamination and manages sites that have been contaminated in the past. During the conference there will also be the opportunity to visit the labs of the organizers at ETH and discuss methods for the chemical analysis of environmental samples.
