Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church February 3rd, 2013 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Mission Statement Our Lady of the Hills Roman Catholic Church is inspired by the Holy Spirit and formed by the Gospel, under the patronage of Mary, the Mother of Jesus. As one family under God, the Father, we welcome all who come to us and are particularly mindful of those in need. EVANGELIZATION

An Invitation to you: Jesus said “If anyone thirsts let him come to me.” Are you thirsty for more in your life? Thirsty to be Baptized? Hungry to receive Communion or Confirmation? Do you have children being raised Catholic, but you as a non-Catholic struggle with what you have heard about the Church? If you are--or you have a friend who might fit this description-- this is an invitation to come to the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults or RCIA Class. There is never any pressure or obligation to join the Catholic Church. Questions right now? Please contact Fr. Dave- 772-7400 or Deacon Steve at 414-4598 or email [email protected].

How Can YOU help a Friend?

John 3:5-8 Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born anew.' The wind blows where it wills, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know whence it comes or whither it goes; so it is with every one who is born of the Spirit." The Holy Spirit is the driving force that leads people into the Church. God gives us the privilege and the responsibility of participating in the Church’s work of evangelization. The recruitment of RCIA candidates is a necessary part of this evangelization effort. Every individual who is not fully initiated into the Catholic faith is a potential RCIA candidate. It is so important to get the word out! The following three categories cover everyone: · The unbaptized (Any non-Catholic of any background) · Those baptized into a different Christian faith. · Catholics who have not received all their sacraments. If you know someone with the above situation, please tell them about RCIA! You can also email [email protected] to get an electronic copy of “The Four Steps of RCIA” or call Deacon Steve at 414-4598. PRAYER & WORSHIP Our sympathies are prayers are extended to Don Gagnon and family on the loss of Don’s father, Romeo Gagnon and to Leo Cardosi and family on the death of his mother, Ellen McMikle. May they rest in God’s peace. On Thursday, February 7th, there will be vespers beginning at in the church at 5:00 pm. This is the first Thursday of the month so we will also pray Sacred Heart Devotions. Please join us for this prayer service which will last to approximately 6:15 pm.

Pray For Peace If you have a family member or friend serving in the military, please see the bulletin board in the Narthex and provide a picture so we can keep them in our prayers. Details are on the board. Everyone, please pray daily for our service men and women and their families. Joy in the Spirit Charismatic Prayer Group meets in the church on Tuesdays, 7:00-8:30 p.m. All are invited to join us for prayer, praise and worship. Contact: Deanie Tourville (7811225 or [email protected]). Greater than the gifts of faith and hope, Jesus shows us how to love as He loved, to love God as our Father, as One Who formed us in the womb and destined us to hear His saving Word. This is the salvation, the “mighty works of the Lord,” that we, as the Psalmist, are thankful to proclaim daily in the Eucharist. (From Sunday Bible Reflections with

Dr. Scott Hahn, www.salvationhistory.com.)

Please bring in your old palms and deposit them in the basket in the Narthex. The palms will be burned and used for our Ash Wednesday ashes. MASS INTENTIONS & SCRIPTURE READINGS

THERE ARE NO CONFIRMATION OR SENIOR HIGH CLASSES ON SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 10TH CHRISTIAN FORMATION

DO YOU KNOW... the difference between Sabbath and Sunday? Christians follow the command to "keep holy the Sabbath" on Sunday, but the Sabbath and Sunday are not the same day for everyone. The Jewish observance of the Sabbath on Saturday is derived from the story of God's creating the universe in six days and resting on the seventh (Sunday is considered the first day of the week). Christians gather to celebrate the Eucharist on Sunday because that is the day Jesus rose from the dead. Early Christians probably observed the Sabbath on Saturday and gathered for the Eucharist on Sunday, but by the second century, the Sunday gathering had replaced the Saturday Sabbath observance. Earlier in the history of the United States it was common for governments to enforce laws forbidding certain kinds of work, recreation, and commerce on Sunday. It was a way of encouraging people to devote the day to the worship of God. Very few of these laws, called blue laws, remain in force today. They fell out of use in the latter half of the twentieth century, because it was recognized that these laws favored the practice of the Christian religion. But still, no law says that Christians have to work on Sunday! (The Catholic Faith Handbook, St. Mary's Press)

Today St Paul tells us that to love is the most important thing we can do. He even goes so far as to say that nothing we can do, no matter how great, means anything if we do not have love. He goes on to give us a description of love: patient, kind, not jealous or pompous, not inflated, rude or quick-tempered… the list goes on. How are you doing when it comes to loving others, especially your spouse? Strengthen, renew and rekindle your marriage sacrament so that it can flourish and reflect God’s love. Sign up today to attend the next Worldwide Marriage Encounter weekend. The next weekend in SC is July 12-14 in Spartanburg. Apply at www.scmarriagematters.org or call Desmond and Valerie Thomas at 803-810-9602.
