January 10, The Baptism of The Lord Why was the Lord Baptized? In the Old Covenant, there are many signs of the prefiguration of baptisms, such as water that is seen as a source of life and fruitfulness. Noah’s ark a prefiguring of salvation by the saving of a few through the water. The crossing of the Red Sea, the liberation of Israel from the slavery and finally, in the crossing of the Jordan River by which the People of God received the gift of the promise land (image of eternal life). Jesus Christ begins his public life after having himself baptized by St. John the Baptist in the Jordan. Our Lord voluntarily submitted himself to the baptism of St. John, to “fulfill all righteousness.” Jesus’ gesture is a manifestation of his self-emptying. The Spirit, who had hovered over the waters of the first creation, descended then on the Christ as a prelude of the new creation (life and fruitfulness), and the Father revealed Jesus as his “beloved Son.” In his Passover Christ opened to all men the fountain of Baptism. He had already spoken of his Passion, which he was about to suffer in Jerusalem, as a “Baptism” with which he had to be baptized. The blood and water that flowed from His pierced side are types of Baptism and the Eucharist, the sacraments of new life. From this time on, it is possible for all men “to be born of water and the Spirit” to enter the Kingdom of God. After his resurrection Christ gives this mission to his apostles: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” (USCCB Catechism of the Catholic Church.)

One of our own joining Family Mission Company: Olivia Briolo is a native of south Louisiana. She is the daughter of Michael and Susan Briolo. Olivia always had a strong desire to help people, which lead to her pursuing a degree in Nursing. She felt the Lord calling her to serve Him more deeply, so she took a break from school to discern religious life. The Lord soon revealed His will for her to serve the poor through foreign missions. She was accepted to full-time foreign missionary work with Family Missions Company. Olivia is excited and ready to begin her new journey. Please keep Olivia in your thoughts and prayers! As a missionary, she will not be able to have a job, as mission work will be her job for the next 2 years. She will need about $300 dollars a month to live and she must raise the money now. I am encouraging us, the parishioners of Holy Rosary and St. Cabrini Church to support her financially as well. Every contribution will help her. She will officially start formation in September and leave for mission work in January. If you are able to contribute to this great work, please make checks payable to Olivia Briolo and get them to our office or label them clearly and put them in the collection. Thank you for your prayers and generosity.
