THE LAMB OF GOD

t the Communion Rite during Mass, the priest echoes the words of John the Baptist that we hear in John’s Gospel, ―Behold the Lamb of God.‖ These words made to his disciples caused Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter and another to follow Jesus. Andrew, after staying with Jesus for a day, returned to his brother and brought Peter to Jesus, exclaiming to him that they had found the Messiah. In this short encounter between Jesus, John the Baptist, Andrew and Peter, we have the end of John’s and beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. John directs his disciples to Jesus who, in turn, lead others to him. This is the work of every follower of Jesus and is a model for us.

hese words are also an example of an Epiphany, a word meaning appearance or manifestation from the Greek words meaning ―to shine upon‖. We ascribe the label ―Epiphany‖ on the feast on which we remember the visit of the magi to the baby Jesus but there are actually many ―epiphanies‖ in the Gospels, occasions in which it is being made manifest that Jesus is the Son of God. The Baptism of the Lord, the many miracles of Jesus, the events occurring around the death of Jesus and his resurrection and ascension are all epiphanies.

B

ut what does John mean when he describes Jesus as the ―Lamb of God‖? Today, we see lambs as cute barnyard animals that we like to see in petting zoos. In Jesus’ agrarian/pastoral society, lambs represented food and shelter and sacrifice; their wool being used for clothing, blankets and

tents and their flesh as food. Even their skins were used as parchment and for carrying water or wine. Lambs represented the wealth of a family or community and as such, were proper sacrificial offerings to God. The sacrificial Lamb of God was especially important during the time of Passover when thousands would be sacrificed at the Temple of Jerusalem for the seder meal, the blood sprinkled on the altar and smeared on the lintel of the door as a sign of the Covenant of the Jewish people with God. Jesus is singled out as the Lamb of God whose sacrifice will be a sign of the New Covenant for all who believe in his. In this New Covenant, we are identified as children of God, washed and signed in his blood and for whom he sacrificed himself on the cross. Like John the Baptist, Andrew and Peter, we point to Jesus as Messiah by the way in which we live our lives.

EL CORDERO DE DIOS

n el Rito de la Comunión durante la Misa, el sacerdote hace eco de las palabras de Juan el Bautista que oímos en el evangelio de Juan, ―He aquí el Cordero de Dios‖ estas palabras causaron que sus discípulos Andrés, el hermano de Simón Pedro y otros siguieran a Jesús. Andrés, después de estar con Jesús todo el día, regreso con su hermano exclamándole hemos encontrado al Mesías y lo llevo donde estaba Jesús. En este corto encuentro entre Jesús, Juan el Bautista, Andrés y Pedro, tenemos el fin de Juan y el principio del ministerio público de Jesús. Juan dirige a sus discípulos hasta Jesús quien, a su vez, guía a otros hacia él. Este es el trabajo de cada seguidor de Jesús y es un modelo para nosotros. Estas palabras son también un ejemplo de una Epifanía, un aspecto significativo de la palabra o la manifestación de las palabras griegas que significan ―para que resplandezcan‖. Atribuimos la etiqueta ―Epifanía‖ en la fiesta en la que recordamos la visita de los magos al niño Jesús pero realmente hay muchas ―epifanías‖ en los evangelios, ocasiones en la que se hace manifestar que Jesús es el Hijo de Dios. El Bautismo del Señor, los tantos milagros de Jesús, los eventos ocurriendo alrededor de la muerte de Jesús y su resurrección y ascensión, todas son epifanías. Pero, ¿Qué quiere decir Juan cuando describe a Jesús como el ―Cordero de Dios‖? Hoy en día, vemos a los corderos como animales en lindos corrales que nos gusta ver en los zoológicos para niños. En la sociedad agraria/pastoral de Jesús, los corderos representaban comida, refugio y sacrificio; su lana se usaba para la ropa, mantas y tiendas de campaña y su carne como alimento.

Incluso su piel fue usada como pergamino, para llevar vino o agua. Los corderos representaban la riqueza de una familia o comunidad y como tal, eran propias para ofrendas y sacrificios para Dios. El sacrificio del Cordero de Dios fue especialmente importante durante el tiempo de la Pascua cuando miles serían sacrificados en el templo de Jerusalén para la cena seder, la sangre rociada sobre el altar y untada en el marco de la puerta como una señal de la Alianza del pueblo judío con Dios. Jesús es señalado como el Cordero de Dios cuyo sacrificio será un signo de la Nueva Alianza para todos los que creen en él. En esta Nueva Alianza, somos identificados como hijos de Dios, lavado y firmado con su sangre y que por nosotros se sacrificó en la cruz. Como Juan el bautista, Andrés y Pedro, señalamos a Jesús como el Mesías por la forma en que vivimos

I will be their assured refuge in life and especially in death.” The word refuge means: ―to flee from‖. It brings images of someone in great peril fleeing for their life, leaving the safety of what is known to the fear and uncertainty of the unknown territory. Perhaps it brings to mind images of war-torn countries, of refugee camps, of people who have left and lost everything but the clothes on their back and a few meager belongings. Yet in our ordinary lives in Lomita and the South Bay, I too am seeking refuge from my trials and sufferings. In this new year what am I called to flee from which brings death and destruction to my spiritual life, and where do I find refuge in times of trouble and sorrow? What do I glory in? What can I lose myself in for hours? Jesus assures us that he is there and not left behind with the old life. He promises that he will guide us on the way of peril and suffering even being present with us at our death. For Reflection and Journal Writing  What new directions am I being called to?  Where do I take refuge from the dangers and uncertainties of my life?  What would I grab to take with me?  Do I turn to Jesus as my refuge, my rock, my savior? In your journal, make a list of five things that bring you joy.

REFLECTIONS ON THE LIFE OF OUR PATRONESS—PART IV The Visitation Convent in Paray-le-Monial Margaret’s desire to enter a convent far from her home led her to the country village of Paray-le-Monial and the Sisters of the Visitation Order. She was welcomed by her first superior, Mother Hieronyme, on May 25, 1671 and spent the rest of her life within the walls of the convent. The Visitation Sisters, founded by St. Francis de Sales and St. Jane Frances de Chantal sixty years earlier, was a contemplative Order whose main mission was prayer for the Church and the world. The Visitation Convent at Paray was relatively new, having been opened by the foundress herself in 1643. Many of the older sisters personally knew their saintly founders and promised obedience to fervent prayer and selfsacrifice as a means to redeem souls throughout the world. Each year, many young women sought entrance to the community, and the spring of 1671 was no exception. Margaret and her class joyfully entered religious life. They were placed in the care of a deeply spiritual and elderly mistress of novices, Sr. de Thouvant, who instructed the young sisters to “go, and place yourselves before God, like canvas before a painter.” From the beginning, there was something a

bit unusual about Margaret’s behavior. Margaret cherished time in her small cell, furnished with only a bed, table and chair. She especially looked forward to opportunities to pray in the chapel. In fact, she found ways to spend as much chapel time possible in private prayer. Her visions of the Lord began almost immediately upon her entrance to the convent. Sisters would marvel at the hours Sr. Margaret would spend kneeling in absolute silence and stillness. Attempts to break her concentration proved fruitless. Only under obedience to her superior would she discontinue the private encounter with God. The sisters grew concerned of Sr. Margaret’s strange behavior. Her extreme methods of self-discipline were unconventional, even for the life of a 17th century nun (more on this next month). She was assigned to the convent infirmary in the care of the elderly and sick members of the community. The head of the infirmary was to keep Sr. Margaret busy at all times. She proved not to be a very good nurse’s assistant and found ways to slip back to the chapel for personal prayer. Next Time: Margaret and her Beloved Spouse

IN ST. MARGARET MARY HISTORY JANUARY 11, 1998—Msgr. Thompson announced the implementation of “Renew 2000”, a new parish program of gathering in small faith communities, to prepare the parish for the marking of the new millennium in the year 2000. Over 700 parishioners participated in small faith sharing groups. The movement, later called “Koinonia”, continued several years past its original 3-year goal. JANUARY 12, 1992 — The parish youth group began their “Pennies for Jesus campaign, asking parishioners to donate pennies to purchase new statues for the church’s nativity scene. A cow and donkey were purchased for Christmas that year. Over 275,000 pennies were collected. JANUARY 12, 1980 — All parishioners of Italian heritage were invited to join a new parish organization, the Italian Catholic Federation.

DISCIPULOS DE CRISTO Por Humberto Beltrán

Nosotros, como bautizados, tenemos un nombre que es al mismo tiempo nuestra identificación civil y nuestra identificación cristiana. Nuestro nombre no sólo está en los registros civiles de nacimiento sino también en los libros bautismales de nuestras parroquias. Nuestro nombre, el que nos dieron con el agua del bautismo, tiene un significado: hijo de Dios, discípulo de Cristo, cristiano. Cristiano, ese es nuestro nombre. En el Nuevo testamento los nombres tienen gran importancia y significado. Juan el Bautista, cuya vida y predicación fue un testimonio de penitencia y conversión a Dios, no llevó el nombre de su padre ni de ninguno de sus familiares, sino el que Dios le había reservado, Juan. La gente se preguntaba: ―¿Quién será este niño y por qué la mano de Dios estará sobre él?‖ Nosotros sabemos quien fue: el heraldo de Cristo, la voz que grita en el desierto.

Jesús: El Salvador de Nuestros Pecados. Jesús recibió también el nombre de parte de Dios; un ángel le reveló en sueños a José: ―Le pondrás por nombre Jesús porque el salvará al pueblo de sus pecados‖. En otra parte se dice que será llamado Emanuel que dignifica ―Dios con nosotros‖. En el evangelio de hoy, Jesús, mirando y dirigiéndose al hermano de Andrés, le dice: ―Tú eres Simón, hijo de Juan; en adelante te llamarás Pedro, que quiere decir: piedra‖. Pedro, primer Papa, llegó a ser la piedra de cimiento de la iglesia. Según el evangelio de hoy, los discípulos descubren esa secreta vocación en un encuentro personal con Jesús, compartiendo con El como amigos. ―¿Dónde vives?‖ le preguntan. Las experiencias de ese encuentro cambió el giro de su vida de pescadores. Jesús vive en medio de nosotros.

Discípulo: Reconoce y Cree en Jesús. Discípulo, es el creyente que reconoce a Jesús, y porque lo busca de veras y se queda con él. El encuentro de los primeros discípulos –- y de los discípulos de todos los tiempos -- se compone de

tres momentos: una búsqueda, una morada y una permanencia. Habemos personas que buscamos superficialmente y que, además, rechazamos lo que encontramos. Otros ni siquiera buscan, porque están decepcionados. Pero hay quienes buscan y encuentran: son los discípulos del Señor.

Eucaristía: es Celebrar la Presencia del Señor. Cuando éramos niños nos enseñaron que Jesús esta en los cielos y en el sagrario, y que Dios esta en todas partes. El evangelio nos dice que Jesús está donde dos o tres se reúnen en su nombre y donde hay caridad efectiva con el hermano pobre y necesitado. Discípulo es quien sabe encontrar de verdad al Maestro allí donde está. Quedarse es permanecer, compartir, participar, comprometerse. No vale quedarse lejos o quedarse pasivamente. Quedarse con Jesús es aceptar su causa con todas las consecuencias. Naturalmente, sabemos que permanecer es difícil. Hay momentos de incertidumbre, de duda, de cansancio. Dios nos conoce y reconoce como somos. El nunca falla: es fiel; pero exige de nosotros un mínimo de seriedad, de fidelidad.

Reflexión La celebración de la eucaristía, es la celebración de la presencia del Señor, es la respuesta a la pregunta: “¿Dónde vives?” Aquí encontramos a Jesús, hablamos y comemos con él. Que esta experiencia de la presencia eucarística del Señor nos ayude a profundizar en el significado de nuestro nombre cristiano, y a realizarlo en nuestro diario vivir. Tenemos la invitación de Jesús la misma que les hizo a los discípulos: “Vengan y vean” donde vivo.

“Estaré allí para asegurar su refugio en la vida y especialmente en la muerte.” La palabra refugio significa: ―Asilo‖. Trae imágenes la vida de alguien huyendo de un gran peligro, abandonando la seguridad de lo que es conocido al miedo y la incertidumbre del territorio desconocido. Tal vez trae a la mente imágenes de los países asolados por la guerra, de campos de refugio, de personas que han ido y perdido todo menos la ropa que traen y algunas pocas pertenencias. Sin embargo, en nuestras vidas cotidianas en Lomita y el Sur de la Bahía, yo también estoy en busca de refugio de mis penas y los sufrimientos. En este año nuevo que estoy llamado a huir de lo que trae muerte y destrucción a mi vida espiritual, y ¿Dónde puedo encontrar refugio en tiempos de angustia y dolor? ¿Qué hago en la gloria? ¿Qué puedo perderme en la hora? Jesús nos asegura que él está allí y no se queda atrás con la vida vieja. El nos prometió que nos guiara en el camino de peligro y sufrimientos y estar presente con nosotros en nuestra muerte.

REFLEXION EN LA VIDA DE NUESTRA PATRONA—PARTE IV La Visitación al convent en Paray-le-Monial El deseo de Margarita de entrar en un convento lejos de su casa la llevó hasta el pueblo del país de Paray-le –Moniel y las hermanas de la Orden de la Visitación. Fue recibida por su primera superiora, La Madre Hieronyme, el 25 de mayo de 1671 y paso el resto de su vida entre las paredes del convento. Las hermanas de la Visitación, fundada por San Francisco de Sales y Santa Jane Frances de Chantal sesenta años antes, era una Orden contemplativa cuya principal misión era orar por la iglesia y el mundo. El Convento de la Visitación en Paray era relativamente nuevo, habiendo sido inaugurado por la misma fundadora en 1643. Muchas de las hermanas mayores conocían personalmente a sus santos fundadores y prometieron obediencia a la oración ferviente y auto sacrificio como un medio para redimir a las almas en todo el mundo. Cada año, muchas jovencitas buscaban entrar a la comunidad, y en la primavera de 1671 no fue la excepción. Margarita y su clase entraron con alegría a la vida religiosa. Ellas fueron puestas en una espiritualidad profunda al cuidado de una ama y de novicias antiguas, hermana de Thouvant, quien instruyó a las jóvenes hermanas para “ir, y colocarse frente Dios como un lienzo frente al pintor.” Desde el principio, había algo inusual en el comportamiento de Margarita apreciaba

el tiempo en su pequeña celda, equipada con solamente una cama, una mesa y una silla. Ella especialmente esperaba la oportunidad para rezar en la capilla. De hecho, encontró la manera de pasar mucho más tiempo en oración privada en la capilla. Su visión del Señor empezó casi inmediatamente después de su entrada al convento. Las hermanas se admiraban de las horas que la hermana Margarita pasaba de rodillas en absoluto silencio quietud. Los intentos por romper su concentración resultaron infructuosos. Solamente bajo obediencia a su superiora ella podía interrumpir el encuentro privado con Dios. Las hermanas se preocupaban por el extraño comportamiento de la hermana Margarita. Sus extremos métodos de auto disciplina no eran convencionales incluso para la vida de una monja del siglo 17º (más sobre esto el próximo mes). Fue asignada a la enfermería del convento para cuidar a los miembros más ancianos y enfermos de la comunidad. La idea de la enfermería era mantener todo el tiempo ocupada a la hermana Margarita. Ella demostró que no era muy buena asistente de enfermera y encontró la forma de deslizarse de nuevo a la capilla para la oración personal. La próxima vez: Margarita y su amado esposo.
