Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

January 15, 2017

Our Parish Mission Statement Transfiguration Parish is a people called to build a Catholic Faith Community by seeking Christ and sharing His Gospel through Prayer, Education, Service and Social Activities.

THREE MISSIONS Today we begin with one of the “servant songs” from the book of Isaiah, a song prophetic of Jesus’ ministry of service. Isaiah’s mission is not only to bring back the children of Jacob to gather in Israel; it is also to be “a light to the nations” (Isaiah 49:6). Jesus Christ, as servant, will be the fulfillment of the ancient prophecy and the basis of the new. This Sunday we begin a series of readings from Paul’s letter to the Corinthians. Here Paul is identified by his mission: he is an apostle of Jesus Christ. The church at Corinth to whom he addresses this letter is also identified: it is part of the universal church of God. The Corinthians are called to holiness, as are all Christians. Though the feast of the Baptism of the Lord was celebrated last Monday, today’s Gospel also alludes to the importance of that event. The reading emphasizes that Jesus “outranks” John: his baptism in the Spirit will eradicate sin. Jesus accepts John’s baptism, even though it is he himself who is the Lamb of God. Copyright © J. S. There can be no true peace if everyone claims always and exclusively his or her own rights, without caring for the good of others.

Pastor’s Column Second, John speaks of Jesus as the one who comes after him but ranks ahead because he existed before him. Clearly John has intimate and deeply spiritual knowledge, revealed by God, about who Jesus truly is. He knows that Jesus was born after him in time but that he existed before him – a clear reference to Jesus’ divinity.

“BEHOLD, THE LAMB OF GOD, WHO TAKES AWAY THE SIN OF THE WORLD." John the Baptist

References are an important part of any job application. We choose them with great care, often searching for people with authority and responsibility. We ask their permission to use their names and give them freedom to speak honestly about us. In addition to knowing us, they must be trustworthy and honorable – able to assess our strengths and weaknesses and to articulate them. A lot depends on their judgment. When John came to write his Gospel, he saw Jesus as God’s candidate, and John the Baptist as the one giving the reference. The Baptist gives us a credible and trustworthy reference, boldly proclaiming the truth about Jesus as Savior. Today, we hear part of that holy reference. First, John refers to Jesus as the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world. To the Jewish people and to an early Judeo-Christian Church listening to this Gospel, the image of the lamb would immediately evoke memories of the feast of Passover – that great celebration of liberation from slavery in Egypt. By referring to Jesus as the Lamb, John references him as the bearer of forgiveness, the liberator whose selfsacrifice brings reconciliation and deliverance from sin, and invites all to taste the freedom of God’s children.

Finally, John refers to the event we celebrated last week: the baptism of Jesus. With complete conviction, he speaks from the heart as he recalls the voice of the Father and the anointing of the Spirit: Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God. That is one extraordinary reference! How should we respond to this reference? Shouldn’t it give us confidence that Jesus truly is who he claims to be? It’s a reference that is confirmed over and over in the lives of the saints. Saint Paul gives his reference today when he describes Jesus as the sanctifier and Lord. But as with all references, they can only bring us so far. In many ways, they are really second-hand knowledge. For it is only in the personal, intimate knowledge of Christ, found in the life of faith and service, that we truly witness to what we believe about Jesus. May our reference this week on behalf of Jesus be one that speaks from our hearts, and gives honest assessment of the difference he makes in our lives so that others might just be intrigued and might ask the questions: ♦

WHAT CONVINCES ME MOST THAT JESUS IS “THE FATHER’S ONLY SON”?

HOW CAN I, TOO, ENCOUNTER THE LAMB OF GOD?

A Word of Gratitude

TRANFIGURATION is a Catholic Community GENEROUS OF SPIRIT. I am grateful to be part of this Parish Community with people of Generous of Spirit. People that are always ready to extend to others what they want for themselves. People that do not blame others or circumstances for their problems but step up and do the right thing. This year, Transfiguration Parish made the Spirit of Christmas Shine in so many homes. We made so many children smile and still believe in “the Christmas Magic”. We provided: 350 gifts through “Saint Vincent de Paul Christmas Tree”, 115 gifts to children of Maternity BVM Church and hundreds of diapers to support our families in need. How can I not be proud to be part of this Parish with a Generous of Spirit ? It is more than the actions we all do that define us, it is a state of being. Being people of Generous Spirt! May God bless you, Rev. Juan Pablo Avila

Thank You

Maternity BVM Church

The members of the St. Vincent de Paul Ministry would like to thank you for the support you have given our ministry throughout this past year. It was with your generosity that St. Vincent de Paul was able to provide numerous acts of kindness and continued support to the people in need.

This Christmas we collected 115 Christmas presents for Children of our Sister Parish Maternity BVM Church in Chicago’s Humboldt Park are.

Our Thanksgiving program provided food for 9 families.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY!

Our 2016 Christmas program provided over 350 gifts to the many children in need living within our community. Because of your donations we were also able to provide food for the many families we serve. Christmas and Thanksgiving are “times of giving”; however, it was your support throughout the year that enabled us to help 90 families in desperate need of help. Throughout the year, we provided shelter for the homeless; paid rent and mortgages to keep people from becoming homeless; prevented Com Ed and Nicor from shutting off electricity and gas from homes and apartments; paid medical bills; fixed cars; provided food for the hungry; offered help with budgets and resumes. More than that we listened to people, prayed for them, and hopefully provided hope as they looked to their future. So thank you for your help and continued support to our ministry. Without your prayers and treasures, none of this could happen. God Bless You, The Members of the St. Vincent de Paul Ministry

Ministries and Programs YOUTH GROUP SCOOP

The teens have kept busy for the last several weeks! On Sunday, December 4th, they braved the season’s first snowstorm and traveled to The Catholic Charities warehouse in Waukegan to help unload and organize the gifts for the Adopt-a-Family programs that were being delivered. Several truckloads of gifts from different parishes and organizations arrived throughout the day that needed to be put in the proper places. Catholic Charities runs an excellent program that the teens loved being part of! Afterwards, we gathered with teens from surrounding parishes for mass and dinner at St. Gilbert’s parish. Between Christmas and New Year’s Day, we had an impromptu “reunion”. Former members of the Youth Group joined with current members to tell stories and share some laughs. Thanks to all that attended-Mr. Healy had a GREAT time…he hopes you did as well!!! January started out with another Jr. High Friendly night that the teens organized. The students all had a great time and we hope they will be back for our next event on February 1st. Any teens that are interested in the All Night Lock-in at Enchanted Castle should contact Mr. Healy ASAP. The event will be held on February 3-4. The cost is $50.00 and includes food, beverages, and game tokens. The deadline for this is rapidly approaching! There will NOT be an All-Night ski trip this year. Drop-ins are held at the youth house most Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8:30 PM. Stop in for a while-bring a friend! Remember, it’s not youth group without YOU. Mr. Healy [email protected] Caring for one another…

Mats for the Homeless:

Our church is a family and we consider our community a part of that family. We strive to care for and encourage those both within and beyond our walls. Our care ministry brings the Eucharist to our people to hospital, nursing homes and family homes. By taking some time to extend a helping hand we can show God's love and we assure our interest in their welfare and spiritual life.

Hello Everyone and Happy New Year 2017! What a year it has been for the Mats for the Homeless. We had much success giving away hundreds of mats to those in need. We have met wonderful new people over the year through helping out surrounding communities. The Mats for the Homeless meet on the fourth Tuesday of every month in the Parish office at 7:00 pm. All are welcome to join us!

OREMOS POR LAS VOCACIONES Módlmy się o powołania

Lord, Jesus we ask you to send more servants to your people. Choose from our parishes, from our homes, from our schools and colleges, an abundant harvest of apostles for your Kingdom: priests, sisters, brothers, deacons and lay ministers. We pray that those you call may never lose awareness of the dignity and need of their vocation. O Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, teach to all those the Master calls to say a joyful “yes” as you did at the Annunciation. Amen.

www.chicagopriest.com

Amen.

Panie Jezu, prosimy Cię, abyś wysłał więcej sług do swojego ludu. Wybierz z naszych parafii, z naszych szkół i uczelni, obfite żniwo apostołów dla Twego Królestwa: kapłanów, siostry zakonne, braci, diakonów i świeckich szafarzy. Amen.
