Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 15, 2017

THREE MISSIONS

Today we begin with one of the “servant songs” from the book of Isaiah, a song prophetic of Jesus’ ministry of service. Isaiah’s mission is not only to bring back the children of Jacob to gather in Israel; it is also to be “a light to the nations” (Isaiah 49:6). Jesus Christ, as servant, will be the fulfillment of the ancient prophecy and the basis of the new. This Sunday we begin a series of readings from Paul’s letter to the Corinthians. Here Paul is identified by his mission: he is an apostle of Jesus Christ. The church at Corinth to whom he addresses this letter is also identified: it is part of the universal church of God. The Corinthians are called to holiness, as are all Christians. Though the feast of the Baptism of the Lord was celebrated last Monday, today’s Gospel also alludes to the importance of that event. The reading emphasizes that Jesus “outranks” John: his baptism in the Spirit will eradicate sin. Jesus accepts John’s baptism, even though it is he himself who is the Lamb of God. Copyright © J. S. Extraordinary Time By Cynthia Reyes If you were to ask me what is my favorite liturgical season, I would have to say Triduum and Easter. My senses are awakened with a richness of symbols: water, light, cross, and the Paschal candle. This Sunday we come to the realization that Christmas has ended. We may have even overlooked the Baptism of the Lord, for this year, it came the following day after the Epiphany of the Lord. The colored lights, the wreaths, and the manger that adorned our church are all put away. Now there is a sacred time during this “Green” Time, which the church refers to it as Ordinary Time. Each Sunday the Mystery of Christ is honored in its fullness. We come each Sunday to continue our “Christmas” as we hear and are attentive to the great stories of Jesus as he interacts with people. He continues to “dwell among us” as he walks with his people, as he walks with you and I. In today’s gospel of John, we are reminded of Jesus as “The Lamb of God”. Why is Jesus referred to as a lamb? Metaphorically speaking, “Lamb of God” captures the whole saving mystery of Christ. Jesus is baptized in Spirit as he is revealed as the Son of God; baptized into mission of forgiving us our sins and is slain as a lamb, so that we may have life, and have life abundantly. Jesus is our gift that keeps on giving… grace of forgiveness, grace of love, grace of everlasting life. How may we enrich our lives during these extraordinary ordinary times?

2016 Tax Letters Please be advised that the church has sent out the 2016 Tax Letter to all parishioners whom use envelopes, and who have donated $200.00 or more throughout the 2016 year. For those who donated to Together In Mission, you will receive a letter of your contribution directly from them. Thank you all for giving generously throughout the year. Without your support, the church would be in financial straits. DID YOU KNOW? Help children communicate by reading between the lines When children express that something is wrong at school or with other activities, it's often the job of caregivers to read between the lines to determine what's really going on. They might say "I'm bored" and need your guidance finding a better school-life balance or engaging in more challenging academic work. Ask them to give examples and to help you understand what is going on. If the child is still being vague, remind them that they can tell you anything and that you'll listen with an open mind. As parents and caregivers, you have the opportunity to help kids deal well with negative feelings and challenges. And, if they are being mistreated in some way, keeping an open line of communication with kids will enable you to be their advocate. For a copy of the VIRTUS© article “Communication Tip No. 15: When Children Complain about School,” email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227. ¿SABIA USTED?
