HISTORY & RECORDS

NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY The Indiana men’s tennis team has advanced to the NCAA Tournament on six occasions, the most recent coming in 2011, under head coach Randy Bloemendaal. The Hoosiers are 1-6 in NCAA Regional competition. The Hoosiers made their first appearance in the postseason tournament during the 1997 season. The 1997 season featured a squad that finished the regular season with a 15-10 mark, including a 6-4 conference record. The Hoosiers’ NCAA debut lasted one round as conference foe Northwestern eliminated them with a 4-1 defeat in Champaign, Ill. After a one-year absence, the IU netters returned to the NCAA Tournament in 1999 following a 14-9 regular season mark and a fifth-place finish in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers luck ran short as South Carolina erased their national title hopes with a 4-2 setback in Lexington, Ky. For Coach Hydinger and his troops, the 2000 campaign brought high expectations to a veteran team featuring just two underclassmen. Indiana marched through the regular season posting a 17-7 overall record and a third-place conference finish after going 7-3. From there, the Hoosiers headed to Champaign, Ill., where they made quick work of the Kentucky Wildcats in the opening round. Then in the Regional Finals, Indiana ran into host and sixth-rated Illinois, suffering a heartbreaking 4-2 defeat. After two consecutive NCAA appearances, the 2001 Hoosiers were hungry for a third straight berth. After a 14-8 regular season and tying for a sixth-place finish in a tightly contested conference race, Indiana earned its third consecutive NCAA berth in nearby Terre Haute to face Indiana State. The intrastate foes knocked the Hoosiers out in first-round action, 4-1. In 2008, the Hoosiers rode a 16-10 record to their first NCAA appearance in seven years. The Hoosiers traveled to Oxford, Miss. to challenge the Commodores of Vanderbilt, losing by a heartbreaking 3-4 tally. In 2011, Indiana set a school record for wins in a season with 23, earning an at-large berth into the tournament. The Hoosiers played Louisiana State in College Station, Texas. The Hoosiers took the doubles point and got wins from Santiago Gruter and Josh MacTaggart to lead 3-1 before the Tigers came charging back for a 4-3 decision. In 2012, the Hoosiers set a school record for single season victories with 24, including a first round NCAA tournament win over Louisville, 4-2, in Lexington. The Hoosiers fell to the host Kentucky Wildcats in the second round, 4-0.

BIG TEN HISTORY 1921 • Big Ten Co-Champions In 1921, Frederick “Fritz” Bastian of Indianapolis introduced Indiana men’s tennis to the national spotlight. After finishing as the Big Ten runner-up in singles as a junior, Bastian set out his senior year to claim the conference title. After defeating his brother, Dick, who played for Butler, for the state college title, Fritz stormed through conference competition, bringing the Hoosiers the 1921 Big Ten Championship. The Hoosiers were forced to share that championship when the University of Chicago captured the doubles championship. At that time, the Big Ten champion was given to the team that swept singles and doubles titles. Since Indiana and Chicago split the titles, the two were named co-champions. Bastian then represented Indiana at the National Intercollegiate Championships at Merion Cricket Club in Haverford, Pa. The tournament featured 68 players from 21 colleges. Bastian became Indiana’s only national champion in men’s tennis after defeating Carl Fischer of Penn State in straight sets in the championship match. In 1921, the men’s tennis and the wrestling squads both claimed the conference championship, which marked the first time in IU history that two teams won a conference championship in the same academic year.

1953 • Big Ten Champions In 1953, Indiana looked to defend its conference title. After finishing with a 17-2 mark and just eight points more than second-place Michigan State, the Hoosiers ended the Spartans’ title hopes for the second consecutive season. Junior Duane Gomer and sophomores John Hironimus and Bob Martin claimed the 2 through 4 titles and the duo of Hironimus and freshman Ed Harrison took the doubles title at No. 3. The Hoosiers edged the Spartans by a count of 64.5 58.5.

Led by the stellar play of Fritz Bastian, Indiana earned a share of the Big Ten title in 1921. 1952 • Big Ten Champions Indiana had only won six matches during the five years prior to hiring Dale Lewis in 1949. Just four short years after Lewis took the helm, he took the Hoosiers to the top. In 1952, Lewis led the Hoosiers to a 13-3 season and their first Big Ten crown in 32 seasons. Junior Eli Glazer, sophomores Duane Gomer and Tom Lynch and freshmen John Hironimus and Bob Martin all swept the singles titles from 2 through 6. Hironimus teamed with Lynch to add the No. 3 doubles title, allowing the Hoosiers to run away with a 70-56 win over Michigan State in the conference point standings.

1954 • Big Ten Champions In 1954, the Hoosiers three-peated as Big Ten Champions behind a perfect 19-0 season. Unlike the previous season, however, the race for the crown was not close. The Hoosiers opened a record-setting margin of 52-36 over runner-up Michigan. For the Hoosiers, junior Bob Martin claimed his third straight singles title at No. 3 and teamed with junior John Hironimus to take the No. 1 doubles title. With the 1954 doubles title, Hironimus had also claimed his third straight conference title. Sophomore Carl Dentice posted an undefeated record at No. 6 singles, en route to his first championship. 1964 • Big Ten Champions In the last season for the point-system format, the Hoosiers erased a nine-year absence from the top of the Big Ten conference. The Hoosiers used a 21-2 regular season and a 10-1 conference record to capture the conference championship. Indiana outscored second-place Michigan by a count of 69-48.

In 1964, All-American Dave Power led the Hoosiers to a Big Ten title. The Hoosiers had a 21-2 regular season and a 10-1 conference record on the year.

DAVIS CUP PARTICIPANTS RICARDO JORDAN, 1999-2002 GABREIL MONTILLA, 1999-2006 EOIN COLLINS, 1987-2004 The Davis Cup is the annual international men’s tennis team competition. In 1900 Dwight F. Davis, a student on the Harvard tennis squad, wanted to match the skills of four members of his team against a team from England. He developed a format that called for three days of competition, with two singles matches on the first day, a doubles match on the second, and two more singles matches on the final day. Known as a “tie,” this head-to-head arrangement pits nation against nation and remains in use today. Three former members of the Indiana men’s tennis team have represented their countries in international and Davis Cup play. Ricardo Jordan and Gabreil Montilla represented Puerto Rico and Eoin Collins played for his country of Ireland. Collins graduated from Indiana in 1989 with a singles record of 97-58 and a doubles mark of 59-45. Collins played for Ireland from 1987-97 and in 2004. He has played 35 matches in international play, registering 16 wins. He was instrumental in the team’s 3-2 win over Ghana in the 1990 Euro/African Group I Final. Collins won his doubles match in five sets (1-6, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, 11-9) and his singles match against Frank Ofori 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-3. Montilla, a member of the Puerto Rican Davis Cup Team since 1999, is the all-time wins (36), singles wins (21) and doubles wins (15) leader for his country. Montilla has also played the most years (7) and most times (28) in Puerto Rican history. The 2000 Indiana graduate earned international singles victories in 2004 against Scott Willinsky of Jamaica (6-3, 7-6 (6), 6-4) and Christopher Eldon of the Bahamas (6-4, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4). He won all seven matches he played on the international level during 2003 and all nine during the 1999 campaign. Montilla helped his country to victories over Bolivia, Honduras, El Salvador, and Trinidad & Tobago in 2003. Jordan is a 2001 graduate of IU, along with Montilla, who played for Puerto Rico. Jordan was a member of the Puerto Rican team during 1999, 2001 and 2002. He had an all-time record of 12-5, including a 12-4 doubles mark. Montilla and Jordan together have the most wins as a doubles team in Puerto Rican team history with seven. In 2002, he earned doubles victories with Montilla against Costa Rica, Panama and the Dominican Republic.
