NCAA NOTES SEMIFINALISTS: For the first time in UNM's history, the Lobos had a doubles team win three straight matches during the 1998 NCAA Championships. Pepe Caballero and Jeff Williams beat doubles teams that were ranked No. 1, Steve Baldas and John Roddick of Georgia, No. 8, David McNamara and Julius Robberts of Middle Tennessee St., and No. 13, Louie Pranic and Gareth Williams of Tulsa, in Athens, Ga. The Lobos' duo lost in the semifinal round but earned All-America status. REGIONAL WINNERS: The Lobos accomplished a first during the 1995-96 season. The format for the NCAA Championships changed in 1994. Unless a team is ranked in the top-eight, they must compete in a regional tournament. The Lobos went to Provo, Utah, for the Region VII Championships and beat two quality programs in Boise State and South Alabama. Unfortunately, the reward was a first round match against the No. 1 seed, the UCLA Bruins, in Athens, Georgia.
