Vanderbilt Men’s Tennis 2015-16

Coaching & Support Staff Ian Duvenhage, Head Coach 11th Season

Entering his 11th season as head coach of Vanderbilt’s men’s tennis program, Ian Duvenhage has made Vanderbilt a mainstay in the rankings and a consistent contender for the NCAA Tournament. The team’s rise has come as Duvenhage has crafted what is considered one of the hardest working and most respected programs in the country. After missing the NCAA Tournament in his initial season with the Commodores in 2006, Duvenhage has guided Vanderbilt to the tournament seven of the past eight seasons. Vanderbilt made back-to-back appearances in 2007 and 2008, and returned to the NCAA Tournament with a five-year stretch spanning from 2010

to 2015. The 2015 season was one of the most fruitful years, as VU finished fifth in the SEC with a record of 8-4 against league teams. With a 20-8 record, Vanderbilt dropped just one home match the entire season. The Dores competed in their fifth-straight NCAA tournament, falling 4-0 in the second round to host school Ohio State. Individually, Vanderbilt had immense success as Duvenhage was named the 2015 Ohio Valley Regional Coach of the Year. In addition, Gonzales Austin was voted the SEC Player of the Year and Ohio Valley Player of the year. As the No. 1 doubles team for over a month, Austin and Johnson earned All-American honors. Austin capped his career earning his fourth All-American title in singles, ranked No. 7 in the country. Freshman Daniel Valent earned Ohio Valley Player to Watch honors, SEC All-Freshman team and a spot on the Second Team All-SEC. During the 2014 Commodore campaign, Duvenhage secured his 100th career win with the ‘Dores in a 6-1 victory over Ball State. After 27 years of coaching experience, Duvenhage has amassed 458 career wins. At the conclusion of the 2014 season the Commodores were ranked No. 20 by the ITA, the second highest finish in Duvenhage’s time at Vanderbilt. The Commodores compiled an 17-11 overall record, and 5-7 mark in SEC play. The Commodores hosted NCAA Regionals for the second year in a row and advanced to the second round. Vanderbilt also hosted the SEC Tournament, advancing to the semifinals for the first time since 2004. Individually, Gonzales Austin and Ryan Lipman became the first Commodore players to earn ITA All-American honors in doubles and also become the first to earn both singles and doubles All-American honors in the same season. The 2013 season went down as the most successful in Duvenhage’s first eight seasons. The team finished with a record of 18-11 and made it all the way to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Championships before falling to the top-ranked UCLA Bruins. The Commodores finished the season ranked No. 15 by the ITA, their highest ranking since finishing No. 2 during the 2003 season. Vanderbilt’s 18 wins and Sweet 16 appearance were also season bests, dating back to that same ‘03 squad. One year after sitting out due to injury, redshirt junior Ryan Lipman became Duvenhage’s first ITA All-American, and first for VU since Chad Harris and Bobby Reynolds in 2003. Along with Lipman, Gonzalez Austin and Kris Yee each earned All-SEC accolades. The 2012 season saw Duvenhage’s squad finish 8-16, but still making it to the NCAA Tournament for the third-straight season. The Commodores were without standout Ryan Lipman for the whole season due to injury. Charlie Jones was called upon to pick up the slack and he delivered for the short-handed Commodores.

Coaching & Support Staff Jones had a great senior season, even making it to the NCAA Singles Championship. Jones earned All-SEC Second Team honors, while true freshman Gonzalez Austin was named to the SEC All-Freshman team. In 2011, Duvenhage’s team finished 13-11 overall, making their way into the NCAA Tournament. He had several of his team honored by the SEC, including Ryan Lipman, who was named to the All-SEC First Team and was nationally-ranked by the ITA in the preseason poll for the 2011-2012 season along with teammate Charlie Jones. The 2010 season was a banner year for the Commodores on many fronts. Following a 5-17 campaign in 2009, Vanderbilt more than doubled its win total in 2010 by finishing 13-11 overall en route to setting many new bests in the Duvenhage era. Those bests included five SEC wins, which Vanderbilt had not accomplished since 2004 and a three-match win streak in SEC play for the first time since 2003. Vanderbilt achieved those feats despite playing one of the most challenging schedules in the country for the second straight year. The schedule included matches against three of the Final Four teams and both NCAA finalists. In total, nine of Vanderbilt’s 11 losses came to teams ranked in the top 30, and all 11 came against teams ranked in the top 50. In 2010, Duvenhage hit another career milestone, earning his 400th career win as Vanderbilt’s beat South Carolina 6-1 on April 4. In his first five seasons in Nashville, Duvenhage compiled a 50-65 record and has helped the Commodores achieve a national ranking each season. He guided Vanderbilt from a No. 71 ranking in 2006, to No. 37 in 2007, No. 26 in 2008, No. 61 in 2009 and No. 40 in 2010. He has also increased the team’s win total in four of five seasons. With 30 years of coaching experience, including 27 years coaching the college ranks, Duvenhage, 55, is one of the most experienced coaches in the collegiate ranks, and his experience has helped elevate the play of the Commodores. Also in 2010, Duvenhage helped Vanderbilt freshman Ryan Lipman make history by being named Ohio Valley Rookie of the Year, SEC Co-Freshman of the Year and First Team All-SEC. No Vanderbilt player had ever received those accolades as a freshman before Lipman. Lipman was also selected for the NCAA Singles Championships, where he advanced to the second round. Before Lipman, the previous player to make the NCAA Singles Championship was 2008 graduate Ryan Preston. Duvenhage helped Preston become just the fourth player in school history to earn three-All-SEC honors after guiding him from the No. 5 singles slot in 2005 to the No. 1 slot each of his final three seasons. Preston’s success helped land him an invitation to the NCAA Singles Championship three years in a row. In 2008, Duvenhage helped Vanderbilt advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row with a win over No. 38 Indiana. The team also posted its first win

in the SEC Tournament since 2003 when the Commodores topped Arkansas in the first round. For as much success as the program has had on the court under Duvenhage, it has had just as much off it. During the 2009-10 academic year, Vanderbilt posted a team GPA above 3.0 and was selected as an ITA All-Academic team for the second straight year. The NCAA also lauded the Commodores for ranking among the top 10 percent in men’s tennis based on their most recent multiyear Academic Progress Rates. In 2009, Vanderbilt had three players selected as ITA Scholar Athletes. In 2008, Preston was recognized for his work in the classroom when he was named to the second team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV Team. Hired on June 23, 2005, Duvenhage is the fourth men’s tennis head coach since the program began in 1981. Duvenhage’s resume includes a 428-262 collegiate record. His 27-year college head coaching career includes 13 years at Florida and seven at his alma mater, the University of Miami. Duvenhage’s impressive resume also includes one NCAA runner-up finish, two NCAA third-place finishes, four NCAA final eight appearances, and sixteen appearances in the NCAA sweet sixteen. The native of Kuruman, South Africa, came to America through a tennis scholarship from the University of Miami. By the time he graduated with his M.B.A. in 1983, Duvenhage boasted a 52-17 career record, competed in the NCAA singles championship his junior year and won a USTA doubles title with partner Michael Robertson in 1983. Duvenhage served as head coach of the Miami women’s tennis program from 1982 through 1988 and led the team to a 131-44 record with a .749 winning percentage. The Hurricanes participated in post season NCAA play all seven seasons of Duvenhage’s campaign and were ranked in the national top five for four seasons. He was inducted into the University of Miami Hall of Fame in 2011 for his success during his time there. In 1985 the Hurricanes saw one of their most successful seasons in team history when they competed in the NCAA finals and were ranked second in the nation. Duvenhage followed up the `85 season by leading Ronni Reis and Lise Gregory to the NCAA doubles championships and winning the Wilson intercollegiate Coach of Year award in 1986. In 1988 Duvenhage signed on with the University of Florida and began his thirteen-year reign with the Gators. From 1991 through 2000, the Florida men’s tennis team became one of only three schools to finish in the national top 16 for nine consecutive years in addition to winning two SEC titles.

Duvenhage also coached four Gator national champions, 1993 NCAA doubles champions Mark Merklein and Dave Blair, 1994 NCAA singles winner Merklein, and 1999 singles winner Jeff Morrison. Duvenhage received tremendous praise for his work with the Florida tennis squad. In 1991 Duvenhage earned the Co-Region 3 ITCA Wilson Coach of the Year award. In 2000, Duvenhage received the Region 3 Coach of the Year Award and Daily Tennis National Coach of the Year Award. In addition, the Gator coach received the highly competitive SEC Coach of the Year Award three times (1993, 1994, and 2000). Duvenhage has also served as coach of the USTA National Collegiate Team in 1999, 2001 and 2004. In 2001, after thirteen years with the University of Florida, Duvenhage became the personal coach for Jeff Morrison and accompanied him to tournaments all over the world, including Wimbledon, the French Open, the Australian Open and the US Open. In total, he coached in 16 grand slams. Duvenhage coached Morrison against the likes of Roger Federer, Andy Roddick, James Blake, Nicolas Massu, Ivan Ljubicic and Yevgeny Kafelnikov, and helped him to wins over Juan Carlos Ferrero, Arnaud Clement, Paradorn Srichaphan, Mikhail Youzhny, Mardy Fish, Taylor Dent, Wayne Ferreira and Vincent Spadea. Under Duvenhage, Morrison earned a top-80 ranking in the world. During his time coaching athletes on the professional tour, Duvenhage took advantage of his increased amount of free time to work on his other interests, including his love of oil painting. In 2005 Duvenhage was ready to get back into the intense lifestyle of a Division I coach and snagged the opportunity when it became available at Vanderbilt. A native of Kuruman, South Africa, Duvenhage currently resides in Nashville with his wife Susan. The couple enjoy hiking and traveling while in the off-season.

Coaching & Support Staff Jamie Hunt, Associate Head Coach, Sixth Season

Hunt enters his sixth season at Vanderbilt, and second as associate head coach.

In his fifth season with the ‘Dores Hunt helped led the Commodores to their best SEC record (8-3) in over a decade. Hunt’s recruiting abilities paidoff in ten-fold as VU signed the 5th best class in the country. With the leadership and guidance of Hunt, Vanderbilt capped its 2014 season ranked No. 20 by the ITA.

Ryan Lipman, Vol. Assistant Coach, Second Season

Joined the Commodore staff in August of 2014 after becoming the winningest player in Vanderbilt tennis history, amassing 174 combined singles and doubles wins, two better than the previous record set by Scott Brown.

Alongside doubles partner, Gonzales Austin, the two became the first Commodore players to earn ITA All-America honors in doubles. Additionally, they became the first to earn both singles and doubles All-America honors in the same season. Together Lipman and Austin finished the year at No. 3 in doubles play. The duo set both the single season and career wins record for a Commodore doubles team with 30 and 36, respectively.

Lipman is the first three-time All-American in Vanderbilt men’s tennis history. The Nashville native received the ITA Ohio Valley Arthur Ashe Award for both the 2013 and 2014 seasons. He was also the only VU men’s tennis player to earn All-conference honors in all four seasons.

The `Dores finished their 2013 campaign ranked 15th by the ITA with a record of 18-11, along with making an appearance in the NCAA Sweet 16. Hunt came to Vanderbilt after spending four years as a member of the University of Georgia tennis team. During his tenure, he tallied 116 overall wins, while only dropping 34 matches. He was also an integral a part of back-to-back NCAA Championship teams. In his senior campaign, Hunt compiled a 22-9 singles record with a dual match record of 17-5. He earned second-team All-SEC honors, making it the fourth conference recognition of his career. During the 2008-09 season, he and teammate Nate Schnugg reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA doubles tournament, achieving ITA All-American status. “I am extremely excited to have Jamie on our staff,” Coach Duvenhage said. “I have long respected the way he competes and conducts himself. As a member of two national championship teams he brings the experience of being a champion to Vanderbilt University and the men’s tennis program.”

Support Staff

Hunt was instrumental in Georgia’s most recent NCAA Championships, winning his doubles match in 2007 and his singles match in 2008. He and Schnugg teamed up in 2006 and won the U.S. Open Junior Doubles Championship. Hunt was the recipient of several awards, including the Mike Sell Return of Serve Award, the Manuel Diaz Approach Shot Award and the Bonneau Ansley Men’s Tennis Scholarship. He was also the Southeast Region recipient of the ITA/Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship. Originally from San Antonio, Texas, Hunt was he only junior player in history to win the Easter Bowl Doubles in the boys 14’s, 16’s and 18’s. He also earned ITF World Junior rankings as high as No. 2 in doubles and No. 26 in singles.

CURREY TENNIS CENTER

The Brownlee O. Currey Jr., Tennis Center was completed in November 1993. With the opening of its doors, the Vanderbilt tennis program provides one of the finest tennis facilities in the nation for varsity collegiate tennis. Plans for the new tennis center were unveiled in April 1993 when former Director of Athletics Paul Hoolahan announced that a $2.2 million project was being made possible by the generous benefactors of Vanderbilt tennis. Nashville businessman Brownlee O. Currey Jr. spearheaded the fund-raising for the project. Additional gifts were made by the Joe. C. Davis Foundation, the Fleming Foundation and Mrs. Joanne Fleming Hayes. The previous tennis center, which had provided three indoor courts, underwent several changes throughout the renovation. A two-story, 16,000-square-foot addition was made to the existing indoor structure, providing enough space for five indoor courts. The lower level of the facility houses spacious locker rooms for both varsity teams as well as a training room and locker room space for visitors. A special feature of the center is a state-of-the-art audio/visual room, also located on the second floor. Small video cameras are mounted at the north end of each indoor playing court, allowing the coaches to monitor and record matches in progress on all five courts. The room also serves as a classroom for the coaches and their teams. In addition to the changes of the interior of the tennis center, the building was given an exterior face lift as well. Its new red-brick exterior now matches the architecture of many buildings on the Vanderbilt campus. The fundraising for the renovations of the outdoor ten-

nis courts began in 2001, and five years later fans and athletes are enjoying the fruits of their patience and labor. The $5 million project was completed just in time for the beginning of the 2005 tennis season, where the team advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen for the seventh consecutive year. The new outdoor complex at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center includes nine lighted courts and seating for more than 1,000 spectators. The new facility also features vending areas and restrooms. One of the most dazzling features of the new facility is its state-of-the-art lighting system. The courts are lighted with the most powerful lights on the market so matches can be easily televised at night. The inaugural season of the outdoor facilities drew more fans out to support the Commodores due to the added comfort and accessibility. During the 2008-09 season, Vanderbilt added an electronic scoreboard to the outdoor courts, allowing fans to follow the action more closely. Electronic scoring was also added to the indoor courts at the same time. In the summer of 2009, Vanderbilt unveiled a new All-American display inside the Currey Tennis Center. The display recognized every tennis All-American who has donned the Black and Gold. Prior to the 2013 season all 15 courts were re-surfaced and changed from green to blue. The new courts are to be slower than the privious ones, last resurfaced prior to 2011.

vanderbilt administration

Chancellor Nicholas S. Zeppos was raised in Milwaukee, where he spent many an afternoon watching the great Hank Aaron of the Braves slug home runs in the old County Stadium. Named Vanderbilt’s eighth chancellor in 2008, Zeppos has taken a keen interest in athletics at Vanderbilt during his more than two decades at the university. “I don’t do the operations,” Zeppos said. “I don’t call the plays, I don’t throw the passes. I see my job as simply trying to do whatever I can to support all of the talented people who do these things.” This support has included the endorsement of an athletics capital improvement plan expected to surpass $50 million, which orchestrates efforts to improve the student experience for athletes and assists with recruiting. “One thing I consider the ultimate compliment is when a coach calls me and says, ‘I’ve got a couple of recruits here. Could you meet them?’” A distinguished legal scholar, teacher and executive, Zeppos served from 2002 to February 2008 as Vanderbilt’s chief academic officer, overseeing the university’s undergraduate, graduate and professional education programs and research in liberal arts and sciences, engineering, music, education, business, law and divinity. As provost and vice chancellor, he chaired Vanderbilt’s

34

budgeting and capital planning council, as well as oversaw the dean of students and dean of admissions. Zeppos has led a number of important initiatives at Vanderbilt, including the planning process for The Ingram Commons, a landmark transformation of the firstyear experience; the Strategic Academic Planning Group; innovative efforts in undergraduate admissions and financial aid; and the development of new programs in Jewish studies, law and economics and genetics, among others. In a bold move to strength Vanderbilt’s commitment to admitting undergraduates on the basis of accomplish- ment and achievement, rather than their ability to pay, Zeppos significantly expanded the financial aid program in 2009. By replacing undergraduate, needbased loans with grant and scholarship assistance, the university opened its doors wider to highly talented and qualified students of all economic, cultural and geographical backgrounds. The expanded aid program is funded by a combination of strategic budget allocations, the university’s Shape the Future fundraising campaign, which under Zeppos’ leadership raised over $1.9 billion, and the current Opportunity Vanderbilt campaign. Zeppos was recognized with five teaching awards at the law school before serving as an associate dean, associate provost, and provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. He also served as interim chancellor for eight months prior to being formally appointed as Vanderbilt’s eighth chancellor on March 1, 2008. Zeppos is the Vice President of the 2012-13 executive committee of the Southeastern Conference. In the Nashville community, Zeppos serves on the boards of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Nashville Public Education Foundation. He also serves on the National Security Higher Education Advisory Board and the Freedom Forum Diversity Institute Board.
