WAIT FOR THE LORD WITH COURAGE; BE STOUTHEARTED, AND WAIT FOR THE
LORD.
— PSALM 27:14
Liberation and Reform While you might have to reach for an atlas to determine that Isaiah is speaking about Galilee, today’s first reading (part of which was read at Christmas) is prophetic of Jesus’ future ministry in that province. The light that brings salvation and rejoicing is, ultimately, Christ. Liberation is the theme: liberation from both ignorance (“darkness”) and sin (the “yoke”). As Isaiah identifies a place, so Paul describes an attitude: the attitude that develops, even among good people, of equating their own will with the common good. This always brings dissension, and so it has done in Corinth. Paul will not allow this; we are all members of “Christ’s party.” The gospel is not to divide us. Matthew quotes from Isaiah in today’s Gospel, presenting Jesus as the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecies. The theme is “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17). To spread this message, Jesus begins to select disciples, four of whom we meet today: Peter, Andrew, James, and John. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It’s still months away, but parish ministers, especially if they are involved in the catechumenate, have their eyes on Lent and the Easter Triduum. Until fairly recent times, the last few days before Easter were shaped by an awareness of the Passion, but the faithful were left to their own devices about how to engage with these mysteries. A thousand years ago, the Easter Vigil as a solemn and central moment of initiation had vanished. By the early 1950s it was a minor moment in parish life, celebrated on Holy Saturday morning, usually with only the priests and a handful of invited guests. Most people understood it as necessary only for blessing the paschal candle and preparing the Easter water. People who were children during World War II sometimes remember that the weekly noontime test of the air-raid sirens on Holy Saturday signaled the end of Lent. Today, of course, we see Holy Saturday as entirely within the paschal fast, and hardly the time for children to be tearing through the plastic grass looking for jelly beans and chocolate eggs. These memories point to a total collapse of the once-central liturgies of the Christian year. This impoverishment of the liturgy was mostly an accident of history. The root cause was the loss of Lent as a time focused on the final formation of catechumens for the Easter sacraments. By 1880, scholars began to piece together a vision of what once had been, and slowly, at first in a handful of monasteries in Europe, pieces of the tradition were rediscovered and celebrated. —Rev. Sacraments
Sacraments
Baptism
Matrimony
We are happy to welcome new members to our Catholic faith community. Infant Baptisms are usually celebrated on the first and third Sundays of each month after the last Mass. Requesting the Sacrament of Baptism for a child involves a serious obligation and faith commitment on the part of the Parents and Godparents. It is highly recommended that parents are registered and active members of the Parish for three months before beginning the baptismal preparation process. We encourage parents to begin this process prior to the birth of their child. After the necessary paperwork, which may be obtained at the parish office, is filled out, Baptismal Preparation Class is attended and completed, Godparent Eligibility Forms are received (Sponsor Certificates), then the Baptism will be scheduled. The only exception is major holy days, such as Christmas and/or Easter. No baptisms will be performed during special occasions. It is important that parents follow the Baptismal guidelines as dictated by church law. Please call the office at 286-4590 to confirm class attendance which is held the 2nd Monday of each month at 7:00 PM, second floor office building.
We welcome all couples planning to marry at Holy Redeemer. We suggest at least one year’s notice so that a date can be scheduled and it can be determined that nothing stands in the way of the valid and licit celebration of the proposed wedding (canon 1066), and to begin the preparation process. Wedding Masses are celebrated on Saturday, and may begin as early as 11:00 AM, but no later than 12:30 PM. It is highly recommended for engaged couples who reside in our parish to be registered active members in this parish for a minimum of 6 months prior to the marriage; attending Mass regularly, and participating in our envelope system before initiating the marriage preparation process, which requires approximately 6 months to complete and in advance of scheduling the wedding reception hall. If the Catholic party lives outside the parish, they need to register and participate where they reside. We are happy to help couples in a positive way prepare for their joyful wedding day and later married life. Please call Rebeca Carver at 286-4590 for preparation and information.
Active parishioner status
Parish News Adoration
We receive many requests for parishioners to be godparents or sponsors for the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation and to rightfully enjoy the number of services offered at Holy Redeemer. Part of the request is to be able to verify that a person is an “active member” of Holy Redeemer. An “active member” is: i i
Properly registered on the parish rolls. Faithfully attends Mass on Sundays and Holy Days i Participates in parish activities/ministries when possible i Uses the parish envelope system for donations These are the main factors that will be considered in making the determination. 4
Join us every Friday 8:30 AM—9:30 AM at the Sacred Heart Chapel for exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and silent prayer, ending with Benediction at 9:30 AM. Please note, First Friday of the month adoration hours are 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Thanks to the many parishioners who come forward and commit to an hour each week to ensure the Blessed Sacrament is never alone. All Parishioners are invited and encouraged to spend quiet time with Jesus. Gratitude is expressed to the people who sign up to be present during all the hours listed so that this most sacred of devotions may take place. 809HR012217
