PARIS DESIGN WEEK 2015

What’s new in design this autumn ? The fifth annual PARIS DESIGN WEEK, scheduled to overlap with MAISON&OBJET PARIS, will take place from Saturday 5 to Saturday 12 September 2015. For eight days, the event invites French and international professionals and the general public to discover the best showcases of design in Paris, while the leading talents in the discipline gather in the now! le Off exhibition. Late-night openings, debates and installations bring the city to life, echoing the new releases for autumn and kicking off the pre-holiday shopping period. This latest edition intends to forge even stronger and broader ties between those involved in Parisian design, but also to strengthen the event’s technical dimension with the creation of the Projets special itinerary. Established to mirror the development of the MAISON&OBJET PROJETS show, this new themed itinerary invites specifiers and private individuals with development projects to enter the participants’ showrooms to meet interior design professionals – a unique early-autumn opportunity to start planning home improvement and décor projects. 2

FontanaArte sheds light on the Deyrolle curio shop 46 rue du Bac, Paris (7th arr.)

What better time than PARIS DESIGN WEEK to try improbable combinations that are ultimately so complementary? Deyrolle, a Mecca for taxidermy and the observation of nature, and FontanaArte, an icon of Italian-made design and decorative arts for more than 80 years, are joining forces to mark this great event held this coming 5-12 September. Deyrolle, a scientific and educational institution since 1831, and FontanaArte, the gold standard in contemporary design, are making the most of the occasion to come together for one week to introduce a wide audience of experts and novices to two exceptional worlds in which art, creation and history intertwine in an exhibition on the theme of discovery and wonder. Deyrolle offers FontanaArte the opportunity to display their 2015 collection of lighting creations presented last April at the Euroluce show in a space with a spirit that will truly astonish all who enter. Illuminating a Parisian monument such as Deyrolle is no mean feat!

Triode will present an eclectic selection of wall lamps from the US in their showroom. Though they are often upstaged by the majestic presence of chandeliers, wall lamps remain an essential element of today's interior design, that bring value to living spaces. This is all the more true considering that they often serve as a starting point for a whole line of light fixtures. As part of the Brooklyn Rive Gauche exhibition (at Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche, 29 August-17 October), Triode and American Design Friends will present in three different spaces: an installation by designers Ladies&Gentlemen, a major piece by Bec Brittain and a selection of objects and accessories by Brooklyn-based designers. 1 ShapeUp chandelier, Ladies&Gentlemen Studio for Triode © Charlie Schuck 2 Stella Triangle wall lamp, Rosie Li for Roll & Hill © reserved

To recognise these firms, Belgium is Design has devised the installation Is this real? a tribute to Belgian surrealism. It explores the capacity these entities have for innovation, preservation of savoirfaire, skills transfer and developing projects and products that serve as ambassadors of Belgian culture abroad. Dolce Vita? From Liberty to Italian design Musée d’Orsay, 1 rue de la Légion d’Honneur, Paris (7th arr)

1

In early 20th-century Italy, the decorative arts enjoyed a legacy of a grand tradition of arts and crafts and interpreted the desire for progress held by a nation at long last unified. Cabinet-makers, ceramicists and master glassmakers often worked in collaboration with leading artists, creating an authentic “Italian style” that would ultimately influence the very emergence of modern design. To explore this climate, the exhibition presents a chronological journey expressed through one hundred works and based on a flowing discourse between decorative and fine arts. 1 Dolce Vita at the Musée d'Orsay © reserved 2 Dolce Vita at the Musée d'Orsay © reserved

The French-made sustainable city Publicis Drugstore, 133 avenue des Champs-Elysées, Paris (8th arr.)

Eco-friendly architecture and sustainable cities Everyone talks about sustainable and eco-friendly cities, but no one knows what it really means. Is it a green city? Or, on the contrary, a very dense city? We wanted to understand more about this concept, so we set out in search of sustainable cities in France and found ourselves at a crossroads between reality, utopia and largescale experimentation. We have visited green buildings, discovered ecodistricts, interviewed architects and urbanists on their successful projects and tried to capture a picture of what a sustainable city is. To help us navigate the topic, we have chosen architect and urbanist Christian Devillers for his dual expertise. His view of the concept and those of the other twenty interviewees give us the outline of an eco-friendly and sustainable map of France’s cities – a subjective map that covers France from North to South, from West to East, from Bordeaux to Paris, from Strasbourg to Montpellier. With the help of: Jean-Michel Wilmotte, Edouard François, Patrick Bouchain, Anne Démians, Christian Biecher, Denis Valode, Daniel Vaniche, the Mikou sisters, Djamel Klouche, Jean de Giacinto, Patrice Arotcharen, AS Studio/Marc Lehman and Marie-Hélène Contal. Merci invites you to take time out for things, to take advantage of the poetry of everyday life with lightness, joy and fantasy. Let’s reaffirm our desire to see the good side of things, things we really like, things that make our life easier. This fall, ‘Keep cool! Life is beautiful!’ Merci likes to take a step back and take a good look at its surroundings, because even if life is not always rosy, presenting things with a dose of humour and a light touch is essential in our contemporary society! Slow Life is a desire to find the meaning of things with a minimum of fuss, and objects that make everyday life easier, with a touch of poetry inspired by Japanese aesthetics, a joie de vivre inflected with optimism, a hint of difference and pinch of self-reflection. Slow life comes in 3 propositions: Slow Light, Slow Movement and Slow Sign. Exhibition from 1st to 22 September. 1 AA lamp, 5.5 designers © reserved

MARAIS/BASTILLE/STALINGRAD

Moustache presents Favoris Favoris - French for ‘favourites’ - are those whose beauty or merit earns them specific favours, those who have place first in the favours of the powerful. But Favoris has another meaning in French, referring to the stretches of hair on both sides of someone’s face (sideburns). A close relative to Moustache, Favoris is to be considered as a sidestep for the brand, the temporary opening of a new field for exploration, with no boundaries, a place to carry out experiments that are usually forbidden. Exhibition: 3-6 September 2015. Auction party on Saturday 5 September at 8pm. 1 Favoris at Moustache © reserved 2 Favoris at Moustache © reserved

THE FIRST PARTICIPANTS IN THE PROJETS SPECIAL ITINERARY Elitis 35 rue de Bellechasse, Paris (7th arr.)

A pioneer in 3D wall coverings, Elitis is at the cutting edge of design again this year with a new manufacturing technique for thermoforming and metallisation. The brand is introducing the Celebrity collection, with impressive decorative patterns created with savvy style on 3D thermoformed wall coverings. In a setting glinting with metallic flakes of copper, silver and tin, the covering traces a new relief pattern in raised metal prints with an embossed texture. It creates another kind of aesthetic, like raw, matte ceramic in natural clay hues, creating the intimate illusion of kaolin. 1

The RADO STAR PRIZE France contest, taking place for the third consecutive year as part of now! le Off, is an international design award that serves as a powerful springboard for these designers, promoting their work to professionals and leaders in the design fields and through the media.

These emerging design talents from now! le Off are automatically chosen to take part in the 2015 RADO STAR PRIZE France contest. On 30 June 2015, the Jury deliberated and, for the first time, named two winners of the RADO STAR PRIZE France 2015 — Prix du Jury. It has been awarded equally to Aurélie Hoegy and Jules Levasseur for Dancers and Project S, respectively. They each won €3,000 and a RADO watch. This year, nine projects were selected by the Jury as contenders for the RADO STAR PRIZE France 2015 — Prix du Public. Internet users can vote for the candidate of their choice on the website www. radostarprize.fr between 8 July and 9 September 2015. The nine chosen contenders are Antonio Virga, Atelier A4, Florian Dasras, Keim, Astrid Louchart, Julia Schmit, MIIING, Mala Leche and Pich Tripasai. The Prix du Public winner will receive a Rado watch and will be exhibited alongside the other selected candidates during PARIS DESIGN WEEK at Les Docks – Cité de la Mode et du Design.

About RADO Innovative design and high-tech, scratch-resistant materials: these are the essential hallmarks of the RADO brand. The design concepts behind these creations are guided by the intrinsic nature of the materials used. At RADO, timepiece styling is intimately linked to more intangible values, and the watchmaker has ceaselessly sought out revolutionary new ideas. This philosophy of transcendence and tangible interpretations of the imagination has garnered numerous international design awards. 39

The RADO STAR PRIZE France 2015 contest : Prix du Public Nine candidates selected

The RADO STAR PRIZE France 2015 contest: Two winners for this year’s Prix du Jury Graduated of the Design Academy Eindhoven, Aurélie Hoegy is an unconventional and original young designer. Aurélie takes a disruptive, destabilising direction in her artistic approach to design. Her project Dancers is a collection of chairs made from cotton soaked in latex then dried, exploring a new perspective, between normality and abnormality. Graduated at the ESAD in Reims, Jules Levasseur takes inspiration from industrial design and processes when creating his works. With Projet S, developed in collaboration with the Petrus company, Jules uses an iconic element in elementary construction: sheet metal. Corrugated sheet metal has mechanical, plastic and rhythmic qualities and lends an identity quite specific to industrial production.
