School events – activities for school students and teachers

TEACHERS’ EVENT

Our schools programme offers a range of free activities for 14-to-19-year-olds, from study days to more in-depth projects. Our work with schools is part of Wellcome Collection’s Youth Programme, which aims to engage young people (in their school and leisure time) and local communities through participatory projects that build knowledge, inspire creativity and promote confidence. Wellcome Collection is now bigger, braver and bolder with our redevelopment finished. In particular, we’re really excited to share our Studio with you – it’s the perfect space for study days and creative projects. The Studio was designed in collaboration with young people and includes a purpose-built lunch room, display areas and facilities for a range of creative work.

STUDY DAYS

About our study days We offer a range of free, bookable, cross-curricular study days for students aged 14–19 and can accommodate groups of 10–30 unless otherwise stated. All groups must be accompanied by staff at a ratio of 1:10. Our study days are: • FREE. • Thematic, covering topics such as ‘Body Image’, ‘HIV and AIDS’, human enhancement (‘Faster, Smarter, Stronger’) and anatomy (‘Dying for Science’). • Cross-curricular, with each study day linked to different curricula. • Led by Wellcome staff, to leave you free to get involved in the day and support your students to make the most of their visit. • Varied in terms of activities – e.g. gallery exploration, discussions and creative workshops. • Designed to help students develop their skills, e.g. critical thinking, group work, creativity and presentation. • Intended to support staff and students alike in an enjoyable, inspiring and thought-provoking experience using our unique collections. Booking Because our study days are so popular, we have scheduled specific dates for sessions – see the following pages or the calendar on page 18. Each school can book a maximum of two study days per term. We recommend that you book early. To secure your session, you will also need to complete the required forms promptly – otherwise we will offer the day to other schools on our waiting list. All study days and teachers’ events are free, but we charge a cancellation fee for bookings cancelled within three weeks of the event, and we will ask you to sign an agreement acknowledging this. Suitable for groups of 10–20 students

Suitable for groups of 10–30 students

Suitable for groups of 10–30 students

This half-day study session uses the Wellcome Library’s HIV/AIDS poster collection as a starting-point for exploring public health campaign techniques, the history of HIV and AIDS, and contemporary sexual health issues. After analysing historical campaigns, students will be challenged to design their own poster or a storyboard for a short film.

This full-day session gives students the opportunity to explore the theme of human enhancement through our permanent collections. The morning focuses on enhancement objects in our handling collection and gallery activities in Medicine Man and Medicine Now.

This whole-day session is full of activities on the theme of body image, including creative and discussion-based workshops. The session uses Wellcome Collection’s two permanent galleries as a starting-point for considering body image in contemporary society, in the past and in different cultures. Advances in science and technology have enabled us to change, augment and repair our bodies in ways previous generations could never have imagined; here, we look at the ethical questions that arise from this ability. Where is the boundary between vanity and improving health?

One of the session leaders will be a sexual health worker, allowing students to explore any questions they might have in a safe and informed way within a neutral environment. Links: Health and Social Care, Art, and PSHE

In the afternoon students can carry out a practical scientific experiment investigating physical and mental enhancement. This session will include an examination of the ethics of human enhancement, warm-up games, discussion and debate.

Suitable for groups of 10–30 students This full-day session explores the ethics of acquiring, using and displaying human remains, both today and in the past. Students will use exhibits in Wellcome Collection’s permanent galleries, historical and contemporary case studies, role-play, drama and debate to explore personal, professional and societal attitudes towards our treatment of the dead. NEW: Learning resources for our permanent exhibitions

Bodies of Knowledge FRIDAY 12 FEBRUARY 2016, 10.30–15.30 FRIDAY 11 MARCH 2016, 10.30–15.30

A full-day session focusing on anatomy, exploring how and why our knowledge of human anatomy has changed over the past 2,000 years. After investigating objects, rare books, manuscripts and images from Wellcome Collection’s galleries and library, students will have a chance to use their anatomical knowledge by participating in an osteology workshop investigating a selection of excavated historical skeletons from the Museum of London’s Centre for Human Bioarchaeology. The Weird and Wonderful World of Wellcome FRIDAY 4 MARCH 2016, 10.30–15.30 FRIDAY 18 MARCH 2016, 10.30–15.30

Join us for an eclectic mix of art and science through gallery, creative and discursive activities as we explore the life of Henry Wellcome. We will uncover 19th-century collecting values and their relevance today by handling curious objects and through scientific debate. After a challenge-based activity in the galleries, we will then collaborate in our Studio to create a contemporary response to Henry Wellcome’s world.

We’ve created digital resources to help teachers prepare for a self-directed visit to our permanent exhibitions, Medicine Man and Medicine Now. As Wellcome Collection is a venue that encourages visits from the incurably curious aged 14 and above, we’ve targeted these activities at students aged 14–19. The resources include: • differentiated in-gallery activities that encourage students to engage with our fascinating collections in person • preparation and follow-up activities that can be completed back in the classroom • curriculum links and clear instructions on how to use these resources. You can find these resources at: wellcomecollection.org/collectionlearningresources Links: Science, Art

CURRENT AND UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS

SELF-GUIDED VISITS

States of Mind: Tracing the edges of consciousness

Tibet’s Secret Temple: Body, mind and meditation in Tantric Buddhism

COMING SOON: This is a Voice

UNTIL 23 OCTOBER 2016

19 NOVEMBER 2015–28 FEBRUARY 2016

FREE | DROP IN

FREE | DROP IN

This is a Voice traces the material quality of the voice – its form, weight and body – by looking inside vocal tracts, busy minds and speech devices to capture the complex psychological and physiological origins of voice production and perception.

FREE | DROP IN

This year-long changing exhibition examines perspectives from artists, psychologists, philosophers and neuroscientists to interrogate our understanding of the conscious experience. Exploring phenomena such as somnambulism, mesmerism, and disorders of memory and consciousness, the exhibition examines ideas around the nature of consciousness, and in particular what can happen when our typical conscious experience is interrupted, damaged or undermined. Tibet’s Secret Temple explores Tibetan Buddhist yogic and meditational practice and their connections to physical and mental wellbeing. Inspired by an exquisite series of 17th-century murals from a private meditation chamber for Tibet’s Dalai Lamas in Lhasa’s Lukhang temple, the exhibition features more than 120 objects including scroll paintings, statues, manuscripts, and archival and contemporary film. Tibet’s Secret Temple will uncover the stories behind the ancient, esoteric and once-secret practices illustrated in the Lukhang murals and show their relevance to the expanding and wide-ranging contemporary interest in meditative wellbeing. 14 APRIL– 31 JULY 2016

You are also welcome to bring a class for a self-guided tour of our galleries, but please book ahead by emailing [email protected] or calling 020 7611 2222.

The exhibition focuses on the emotions that resonate in the voice through rhythm, pitch and tone, as well as non-verbal forms of communication. It demonstrates how utterly flexible and manipulable the voice is, changing dramatically with treatment and training. This is a Voice creates an acoustic journey with works by artists and vocalists such as Joan La Barbara, Marcus Coates, Matthew Herbert and Imogen Stidworthy.
