Introduction 2013 was a year we will remember for many years with the fantastic weather we had. Many of us had glorious days on the water and sometimes the weather was so glorious that there was not even a breeze to move us forward. We won’t complain about these days too much as there was always the terrace for a few beers, a relaxing time at the mooring with some friends in the cockpit, or just a leisurely spin in a kayak. This year’s programme will be illustrated with some photographs of 2013 which will help you to recollect those fabulous days and help you look forward to a new season on the water. This year will be action packed if it depends on the committee; all it needs is for you to get involved, get on the water and take up the challenges on the water or to simply join in the functions that we will have during the season. This programme has useful information on what has been arranged for this year. However, dates could change due to weather and we urge you to stay fully up to date via the club website (www.whsc.ie) which will be regularly updated with additional information on events that have been moved. In this programme you will find information on all sailing, the “Selfie Competition” and “Come Dine with Me” which will take place during the winter in the club house. This season again, we expect more visiting yachts again to Dunmore East – let us give them a warm welcome. Any visitors or potential members to the club should be issued with a programme to take home. You may never know on whose table it lands; it is like a message in a bottle… A special thanks to Conor O’Nolan, Rodney Regan and Dave the Sailor Power who contributed to the programme with some marvellous photographs. Commodore’s Welcome I hope you find our 2014 Programme of Events interesting and useful. We at Waterford Harbour Sailing Club are delighted to share this with you and hope you might share some of your time with us in the Sailing Club. Come and look at our facilities and see what we offer. Go upstairs and have a coffee in our wonderful bar or on the deck with panoramic sea views. We offer a great summer lifestyle to our members and their families. Visitors are always welcome and we’d love if you would consider becoming a member of the Sailing Club. We run sailing courses for our younger members and also evening sailing classes for adult members. The cruiser/yachts are always willing to train enthusiastic sailors. This year there are a lot of sailing events planned, with plenty of activities both on and off the water. Bar-B-Q’s happen every Sunday, with other functions on during the week. Visit our website (www.whsc.ie) and check us out. You’d never know who you might meet. As always a big thank you to our advertisers who support the calendar. Please look them up and support them when possible. Here’s to an enjoyable, action-packed summer, meeting your friends and making new ones, with fair weather and good sailing in Dunmore East. New facilities in Dunmore East The diggers have been in Dunmore East for over a year now and they have still not gone. Much has been done and much more is still to happen. The first thing completed was our pontoon for visiting yachts. Last year it welcomed 197 visiting yachts and this excludes the yachts that were on the swing moorings. Many languages were spoken on the visiting yachts from as far away as Norway, Holland and France. The safety railing on the harbour walls now allows families with children to walk and see the activities at sea from ships, trawlers, half deckers, dinghies and sometimes cruiser racing, now from a safe place. The new slip is finished and it allows bigger boats to be launched with a spacious turning circle to manoeuvre boats and trailers. This year the Topper Nationals have been attracted to Dunmore to use the new slip which has been doubled in size to 12 meters. This will see a vast improvement in launching and retrieving boats from the water. The slip will bring additional users with trailers etc. and

consideration regarding parking will be required by all. A new walkway has linked up the clubhouse with the village. Have you seen the planting that the Tidy Towns group did to make this a beautiful descent from the village to the sea? The diggers are still in action this year building the new waste water system for Dunmore East. This new scheme will ensure that Dunmore East can boast a blue flag status for the foreseeable future which is good news for everybody who loves the water. And we are not finished yet… August will see the dredgers arriving in Dunmore East. This will bring the harbour up to modern standards and bring life back into the synchro-lift allowing trawlers to be once more be repaired in Dunmore East. The harbour will allow bigger trawlers in and perhaps even tall ships but certainly larger yachts. The future looks brighter and we are looking with interest to the ideas of the Local Fisheries Action Group (FLAGS)

Getting ready to race a J22 in the club competition.

I was delighted to get the opportunity to spend Summer 2013 teaching sailing in Boston. The company I worked for had three sites around Boston. One was on the Charles River overlooking the city of Boston. The second site was at a teenage summer camp on Long Island and the third was on a lake on the outskirts of the city which is where I worked most of the time. Sailing instructorship is a fantastic asset to have as it makes you easily employable in many countries. I would recommend travelling abroad to teach sailing to anyone. Apart from the obvious advantage of the sun, it’s a great way to meet new people, learn new skills and get to see places while making money and having fun!

Sailing experience is like a free pass to anywhere in the world! If you have the qualifications, the world is your oyster, and you’ll have no problem getting a job as well as expenses paid, wherever you wish.

Alison Greene I started working in WHSC the summer I turned 16. It’s pretty great getting paid to drive motorboats around in the sun, sailing all day and essentially getting paid good money for something you’d easily do for free. You suddenly look at your watch and find yourself asking where the day has gone – something that people don’t usually ask themselves in other jobs. When I compare that to my friends who were stuck inside for long days in your typical newsagents/deli shop – it’s easy to see which is the nicer option.

The summer after my first year of college I worked as a sailing instructor in Toronto while last summer I worked in San Francisco. I had my job arranged and contract signed months before I left Ireland. I earned a higher wage and had better working/social hours than many of my friends who worked in non-sailing jobs and I also had my rent part subsidised. Besides the practical benefits work doesn’t feel like work. Taking the kids out on a J-boat to watch the start of an America’s Cup race start – yes, please!

Emma Dunne Last summer I decided to try something a bit different. Following four great summers sailing instructing in Dunmore East, I took a job working in a summer camp teaching sailing in Cape Cod. I lived in the dorms with the campers and taught all levels of sailing during the day. Working there doesn’t feel like a job – staff have just as much fun as the campers do and I think that is what makes the whole atmosphere so magical. When I compare the work I was doing to the jobs that lots of my friends had there’s no comparison. Only a crazy person would prefer to be slogging in a restaurant or sweating it out with a moving company instead of messing around in boats out in the sunshine all day. I’ve had the chance to do so many new things and meet so many fantastic people through sailing, both through instructing and college racing, I can’t recommend keeping it up and getting qualified as an instructor highly enough.

n

I moved to Scotland five years ago to study medicine. . Last year, I decided to get more out of University and join a club. So with a background of both dinghy instructing and yacht racing, I decided to join Glasgow University Sailing Club. As a result, the last two years of college have been absolutely amazing! I’ve made friends with students in universities all over the UK and we’ve travelled to lakes and cities as north as the highlands and as south as Cardiff. Thanks to my training in Dunmore East, I was even chosen to sail for the Scottish Student Squad, and have been doing so for the past two years. Sailing has given me the chance to experience a completely different side to university, and to broaden my social network across the whole of the UK. With one year of university left, I’m already trying to rally my sailing friends to make an Old Boys Team. Its addictive! Waterford Harbour Sailing Club ❙ Sailing Programme 2014 09

Dinghy Sailing a sport for young and old Last year we saw the Flying Fifteens visit Dunmore East and before that the lasers paid us a visit on national level. It was interesting to see that there were people young and old participating.

We start off every season at St Patrick’s day – the sound of young people enjoying themselves outside is like the first sounds of summer. New young sailors appear on the water every season and it seems that we are doing something right at Waterford Harbour Sailing Club as we now have a number of young people participating at national and international level. In this programme you can read about some experiences from our sailors who became instructors abroad. Not all of us wants to be an instructor or work abroad – some of us just like to learn to sail while

others just like to race locally. So how does one get started? Easy! Waterford Harbour Sailing Club offers “Taster Sailing Classes" for all ages, starting from seven years old. For older people we offer adult sailing classes in cooperation with the Adventure Centre. These classes will give you an idea if you like sailing or not. In July we offer the full range of sailing courses from beginners to Kite and Wires Course. The latter will certainly get your adrenaline levels up a bit. Most children begin in the Optimist as this is a reliable cost-effective boat to start in. If you look after your boat well you will find it easy to sell it on when you get older and more accomplised and you need to move up to larger or faster boats with your gained experienced. It is always good to be in a club where there are ready buyers and sellers available. The club website offers a section in which you can advertise the selling and buying of boats. In the club you will find many people to help you find the right boat and to help you get in touch with people who might be looking for a boat.

Page 2

Our Junior Organiser Julie Finnegan will assist you in sourcing the right course for you or your family to get you started. Once you have the hang of sailing it is time to get racing! There is no reason to be afraid – it is all good fun! With racing you will very quickly improve your skills as you strive to keep up with your fellow competitors and before you know it you will not be at the back but you will be in the middle of it …

On the water we have our safety boats to keep an eye on you and all other competitors will help you on the way together with the instructors. Come on, give it a go.

Welcome to Dunmore East

Dunmore East is a picturesque fishing village in a very convenient location of the southern coast. Whether heading East West or North, Dunmore East will never get you too far off your track. Please moor in the designated locations as specified by the Harbour Master It is compulsory to have a shore line for bow and stern to avoid swinging, particularly the outside boats.

2. Depending on the wind direction and strength, it may be more helpful that all boats have a similar bow or a stern line to shore to allow inside boats depart either to head or to stern. However the outside boats must have both bow and stern. 3. CCTV facilities are in place covering the harbour. Car Parking Parking on the tarmacadam area on the West Pier wall. Cars are banned from parking on the cemented area close to the west pier edge. This is the landing area for fish. Parked cars should use the reconstructed areas on the East Pier facing the pier wall ensuring no obstruction to harbour traffic. Car parking is also available in front of the club house.

By launching or going to sea, the boat confirms the she is equipped and seaworthy so as to be able to face extremes of weather; that there is crew sufficient in number, experience and fitness to withstand such weather; and that the safety equipment is properly maintained, stowed and in date and that the crew knows how to use it. The fact that the race committee conducts inspections of a boat does not reduce the responsibilities of the boat set out in this paragraph. For many the step to go on a sailing boat is still a big step; I know it as I did it only a few years ago … but I am still grateful to the skipper who invited me on board. I am still a beginner and made a fool out of myself on a number of occasions and eventually learned what starboard or port was on a boat after claiming rights in a race against one of the big boys. One looks really cool when you are claiming starboard tack whilst you are on a port tack. These are things that can happen in the heat of the race and you learn from them. Every cruiser in the club is nearly always looking for crew. Now what is the definition of good crew? You would think that it is experienced crew but this is not always

It could be you!

the case. On a boat there are about 6-7 positions and with some common sense and interest and listening to the fellow crew you can get the basics of one of those positions in two or three races. If you want to know a little more before you go to a boat on these positions I suggest you Google “Basics of Sailing by Captain Kangaroo”. It will explain to you in brief and in layman’s terms, some of these positions in a funny way, but I suggest you do not study them too much before your first sail. So what is it in a good crew member that a skipper is looking for …? All you need is to be regularly available so that you can start getting better at one or two jobs on the boat. Turn up when you have agreed to be available for sailing as not turning up at the last minute will leave the boat short-handed. Skippers have lots of time for crew that are eager to improve and are good team workers and have a competitive streak in them. A bit of anti-fouling with the owner is always appreciated too. So if you would like to get a taste of sailing, want to find out if this is something you like, all you need to do is get in touch with the Cruiser Captain or turn up on a Thursday evening at 18.30 or Sunday afternoon at 14.30 with a lifejacket, pair of wellington boots and some wet gear and we will not leave you standing on the quay. You are welcome on board.

eP5R0IZ0E Every team will be responsible for organising one evening for the other three teams so you can enjoy and relax at the other three. To score points the other teams will judge you on the ambiance of your dinner room, the dinner itself and last but not least the entertainment. The winning team will take away the big prize of €500. THE RULES • Dinners will take place over four Saturdays, one in October, November, January and February.

• You need to cook a minimum of a three-course meal. • You need to cater for your own team and the three other teams, so in total 48 people. • Food to be begged or borrowed or self caught, stolen from the neighbours orchard or allotment, • One bottle of wine for every two people to be provided by the hosting team to the guests. • You will need to present on the evening how you sourced your food. • No ready meals or shop bought desserts etc. • No help from other people outside your team. • Once your menu has been posted on the website you cannot change it. • You must attend the dinner party of your own team. • If you cannot attend a dinner party from another team you must ensure your seat will be used by somebody else.
