2014 MIDDLE SCHOOL SUMMER SCHOOL INFORMATION Atlee High School June 23 - August 6, 2014 -- 7:30am-1:00pm To register for a summer course, please complete the enclosed registration form and return to your school counselor by the due date: June 17, 2014

REGISTRATION & PAYMENT Registration begins May 5, 2014. Completed forms should be submitted to the student’s school counselor by June 13. After June 13, registrations will be accepted only at Chickahominy Middle School; no registrations will be accepted after June 17. Students interested in registering for high school courses should contact a counselor for a 2014 High School Summer School Registration Form. TUITION Tuition is due at time of registration. Please make checks payable to student’s home school; however, for registrations being submitted after June 13, checks should be made payable to Chickahominy Middle School. No refunds will be given after July 2, 2014. Students are allowed to take up to two (2) courses during summer school (June 23 - August 6, 2014). For ACADEMIC courses, tuition is as follows:  Hanover County Resident - $170 per course; Non-Hanover County Resident - $255 per course  If a student did not pass an SOL test, tuition is not charged for the corresponding academic course. If a second course is taken, tuition must be charged for the second course only. For ENRICHMENT courses, tuition varies. Please see the descriptions of each for tuition and enrollment details.

SCHOOL INFORMATION Atlee High School is hosting the 2014 summer school program. The school is located at 9414 Atlee Station Road in Mechanicsville, VA 23116; the main phone number is (804) 723-2100. The Middle School Summer Program is held in two sessions: June 23-July 15 (Session I) and July 16-August 6 (Session II), Monday through Thursday. Times are 7:30am - 1:00pm. The Atlee High School Library Media Center will be open and staffed by a certified librarian during summer school hours. The Cafeteria will not be open during the summer. Students may bring snacks or purchase them at school during designated breaks. Students staying at Atlee HS for both morning and afternoon sessions should plan to bring a lunch from home.

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENT Students are expected to be in attendance every day. A student who accumulates a total of more than two days (or eleven hours) of absences will be dismissed without a tuition refund. EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENT CONDUCT & DRESS All rules and expectations regarding student conduct and dress will be reviewed with students at the student orientation on June 23, 2014. This information can also be found in the Hanover County Public Schools Secondary Parent-Student Handbook, which can be accessed on the HCPS website in the “For Students” section.

TRANSPORTATION School bus transportation will be provided to/from Atlee High School for summer school classes, according to the below schedule. Parents should plan to arrive promptly at their chosen drop off/pick up location. Questions regarding transportation can be directed to the Transportation Department at (804) 365-6520. Ceramics (SU33) Students will develop 3-D ceramic forms, both functional and non-functional, to be finished with glazes and/or paints. Forms will be developed from individual plans and include an emphasis on surface embellishment. Handbuilding methods and wheel throwing techniques will be demonstrated. Artrageous! Printmaking (SU34) Students will learn about the development of printmaking and incorporate traditional and contemporary printmaking methods into their own works. From carving printing blocks, to cutting stencils, to manipulating a range of surfaces for prints, students will explore a variety of printmaking processes while learning the fundamentals of this ancient artform. (Enrollment: min. 12; max. 16)  June 30 - July 10, 2014 8:00am - 12:30pm $125, residents; $175 non-residents

Artrageous! Surface Design (SU35) Surface design is the art of embellishing fabric through solid processes, such as quilting, embroidery, or liquid processes like dye painting and printing. Students will explore composition and color theory using several dye painting techniques to create hand-dyed fabrics. They will then use the newly created fabrics to create pieces of functional or non-functional fine craft works. (Enrollment: min. 12; max. 16)  July 21-31, 2014 8:00am - 12:30pm $125, residents; $175 non-residents

Bridges to Algebra (EL50) This course is designed to support students transitioning to Algebra I from Math 7. Foundational skills in the areas of expressions, equations, functions, and graphing will be strengthened, as well as building background knowledge in pre-algebra topics not addressed in Math 7 curriculum. This course is a combination of in-class and at-home study. Students will meet 3 days a week for 2 consecutive weeks with the expectation of practice and reinforcement outside of class through support materials and online resources.  Session I: July 7-9 and 14-16, 2014 Session II: July 28-30 and August 4-6, 2014 7:30am - 1:00pm $125, residents only

ENRICHMENT COURSES, continued: ESL Tutorial (SU01) Students learning English as a Second Language (ESL) will improve their skills in reading, writing, and speaking in English through the immersion experience of English 6, 7, 8. Each ESL student will attend and participate in the English class necessary for his/her appropriate grade placement. The teacher will provide each ESL student with feedback regarding his/her progress in learning to read, write, and speak in English.  June 23 - July 24, 2014 8:00am - 11:00am No charge, residents only “Middle School Jump Start” - Organization & Study Skills th for 6 Graders* (SU37) Would you like to know why homework takes you so long? Have you ever asked, “If I’m so smart, why is concentrating so difficult?” Have you wondered how to really prepare for a test? If you are interested in truly being successful in school, this is the session for you. You will learn how to use graphic-organizers and how to simplify your notetaking. You will understand when to underline and how to summarize. This session will help you to focus and to manage your time more efficiently. Keyboarding (SU36) Students will develop basic keyboarding skills in this course with an emphasis on the development of proper keyboarding technique, speed, and accuracy. Students will explore the use of a variety of software, including word processing.  Session I: July 7-9 and 14-16, 2014 Session II: July 28-30 and August 4-6, 2014 8:00am - 12:00pm $75, residents only

STEM of Football (SU38) In conjunction with the video series, Science of NFL Football, a DEN Leadership Council member joined Stacy Tutt (formerly of the NY Jets and UR Spiders) to create a football camp pilot to examine the effectiveness of combining advanced science with fundamental football techniques in order to create faster, more agile, but overall SMARTER youth football players (boys and girls). This program uses the exercises and tests of an NFL Combine to teach advanced STEM concepts. Students* will work out like professional football players and explore physics concepts like torque, acceleration versus speed, and how to measure hydration or the vector of a geometric object, such as a football.
