Principal Sykes Hosts 1st Chat and Chew with Parents! On Monday, December 1st 2014, Principal Sykes held the first of a series of “Chat and Chews” planned for the Woodlawn High School Community. This was an opportunity for the school’s parents and community stakeholders to hear about the state of Woodlawn High School and to ask Principal Sykes questions about their students or any other matters relating to the school and its future.

Mr. Sykes shared a pretty comprehensive overview of the school. His remarks included an update on the following: Instruction and instructional initiatives, Career Technology Education programs, the improvements in the school’s culture and climate, and student extra curricular activities. The parents left with an agenda of action items and have pledged to continue their support for the school, the admin team, and the initiatives that will support growth. The parents also had an opportunity to enjoy some delicious food, freshly baked cookies, and fellowship with members of the school administrative team. The next Chat and Chew is scheduled for February 2nd.

PTSA Advocates for Woodlawn High at School Board Meeting Mrs. Khaleta Clark, parent of Ananda Clark, testified at the BCPS Board of School Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, December 2nd, 2014. We all should be proud of Mrs. Clark as she eloquently outlined some of the growth that she has seen at the school in terms of Culture and Climate. Mrs. Clark went on to remark about the issues that still remain at the school and appealed to the school board to support Woodlawn High School in the resolution of these efforts. Mrs. Clark discussed Woodlawn’s desire to increase staff in order to support its rapidly growing ESOL population as well as one of the largest Special Education populations in the county. Mrs. Clark also shared with the board that there remains a need to improve structure and a plan to have the entire school air conditioned. Currently there is no air conditioning on the 2nd and 3rd floors and the extreme heat seriously impedes the students’ ability to remain on task. We salute Mrs. Khaleta Clark for her advocacy and her unwavering leadership of the Woodlawn High School PTSA.

On Wednesday, December 10th, 2014, our FALS Program Students attended the annual Winter Snow Ball the theme was Warm Hugs and Snowflakes - at Oregon Ridge. This event is a special occasion where students from BCPS CALS / FALS programs come together to celebrate while demonstrating the many social and functional skills they have learned in the classroom. This event was a magical experience for our students. They all had a wonderful time!

Members of the National Honor Society, including Tamia Green, Dameatria Washington, Haris, Malik, Mel Ombori, Toyosi Elemo, a parent volunteer and their sponsor, Mrs. Bartel, prepared tables and served food and drinks to homeless guests of the center.

The experience was eye-opening to the realities of poverty that affects the Baltimore community on a daily basis. The group plans to volunteer monthly at this organization as one way of fulfilling their mission to serve the community through volunteer work. These students represented WHS well by demonstrating an excellent example of compassion and service to the community.

The WHS Science department has continued to foster creativity and challenge misconceptions. Students have been challenged to investigate the world around them. Students have explored chemical bonds, examined the brain to study the nervous system, researched the causes and implications of wastewater pollution, learned how to properly use a microscope, examine cellular organelles, and investigated the physics of directional motion. The Science Department will continue to challenge students to think critically, ask high-quality questions and analyze the world around them.

When you take a test, you are demonstrating your ability to understand course material or perform certain tasks. Successful test taking avoids carelessness. The following suggestions may help you succeed in having your abilities properly evaluated and efforts rewarded! 1.

Analyze how you did on a similar test in the past. Review your pr evious tests and sample tests provided by your teacher. Each test you take prepares you for the next one!

2.

Arrive early for tests. List what you need befor ehand to avoid panic. Good pr epar ation prepares you for the task at hand.

3.

Be comfortable but alert. Choose a comfor table location with space enough that you need. Don't slouch; maintain good posture.

4.

Stay relaxed and confident. Keep a good attitude and r emind your self that you ar e going to do your best. If you find yourself panicking, take a few deep breaths. Don't talk to other students right before: stress can be contagious.

5.

Read directions carefully! Avoid car eless er r or s.

6.

If there is time, quickly look through the test for an overview. Scan for keywor ds. If permitted, jot any notes that come to mind.

7.

Answer questions in a strategic order: Easy questions fir st to build confidence. Then those with the most point value. On objective tests, eliminate obvious incorrect answers. On essay tests, broadly outline your answer and sequence of points.

8.

Review! if you have time. Resist the ur ge to leave when you complete the exam--check if you have answered all the questions, and not made any errors or mis-marked any answers.

9.

Change answers to questions if you erred, or misread the question! You may also find information in the test that will correct a previous answer.

10. Decide on and adopt study strategies that work best for you. Review wher e you succeed and where you are challenged. Check out your academic support center or a trusted teacher for advice.

Instruction Literacy Team—ILT The Instructional Literacy Team (ILT) is on the move! Mr. Sykes has charged the ILT with spreading an infectious culture of literacy throughout the building. Teachers are taking the WHS literacy initiative by the horns and implementing strategies that promote higher order thinking and student engagement. One teacher has chosen to promote class participation and increase student engagement by using the simple popsicle stick strategy. Social Studies teacher, Ms. Hossbach, keeps her students on their toes by randomly drawing popsicle sticks printed with stu-

dents’ names on them out of a can. The students never know who will be called on next. Simplicity, Clarity, and Priority.

WHS Staff & Students benefit from our Partnerships! On January 20, 2015, I would like WHS to join me in welcoming interns, Ms. Jennifer Dixon and Mr. Nicholas Papaleo back to our school to complete the second half of their teaching internship. Kudos to Mrs. Rajamani and Mr. Manning for hosting and mentoring our interns twice this year. A huge thanks to Mrs. Beauzile, Ms. Wallace-El, Ms. F. Johnson and Mr. Greenberg for also mentoring our first round of interns. I would also like to recognize our NDMU Coordinating Council for participating in meetings, conducting professional development and serving as a positive resource for our interns: Mrs. Adams, Mr. Bernardelli, Mr. Escarge, Mr. Patterson, Mrs. Scala and Ms. Schnirel. WHS is on the move!!!

This is my favorite time of year! Not only do I get to celebrate a New Year, I get to have fun ordering NEW BOOKS for the library.

know. I will do a quick search for reviews (to make sure it is appropriate) and will let you know when the book arrives.

I have students who provide me with lists of favorite authors or books they want me to order. I love talking to them about their favorite books and authors and they love the idea that they are part of the collection development of their high school library!

For those of you who don’t know, we have an e-Book collection as well and I will be adding titles to that collection.. Your students have the capability of downloading books from their school library right to their phones, tablets, or home computers. They just need to contact Mrs. Frager for the instructions.

While students do not hesitate to tell me what they want, teachers are another story! So, I am putting this in the Newsletter, especially for our teachers and staff, but for our parents as well. Are their titles that you would like to see in our library? Have you read something - anything - that you feel would benefit our students that you would like me to purchase? Is there a professional book on teaching, classroom management, careers that you think deserves a place in our collection? Please let me

Our Library Media Center is truly a place without walls. Students and teachers can access our collection, e-books, and amazing databases 24/7. Even though I may close the doors when the school day is finished, the virtual library never closes! Contact Mrs. Frager for book / e-book suggestions: 410-887-1365 or [email protected]
