The IB Core makes IB a program z

Creativity, Action, Service (CAS): Active involvement with community service, artistic, and physical activities. z Theory of Knowledge: an externally assessed course that contrasts ways of knowing in six subject areas z Extended Essay: A 4000 word independent research paper in one of the six subject areas

Who can enroll in the IB Program? z 9th

and 10th graders enroll in PreBaccalaureate (PB) courses z 11th and 12th graders enroll in IB courses z No application process z PreBac and IB courses are open to all students provided course pre-requisites have been met

What is the difference between an IB Diploma and an IB Course student? z

Full IB – Students take full course load plus the IB core - (Creative, Active, Service Hours – CAS, Theory of Knowledge Course and the Extended Essay) .

Individual Classes - Course students choose one or more IB courses

When should students prepare for the IB Program? NOW! Is your child on track? Algebra I completed by end of grade 8 z Level 2 of World Language complete by end of grade 8 Please have your child attend IB Meet and Greet in November 18 during TREC. Senior IB students will be there to answer questions about the IB program and share their experience. z

How are IB and AP courses different? z

IB courses are one or two year courses z IB Student must take the IB exam

AP courses are one-year courses

AP students are not required to test

z

IB teachers are specifically trained to teach IB courses

Students can take an AP exam without taking the AP course

IB courses are assessed internally and externally in several different assessments throughout the course

z

AP courses are assessed with a multiple choice and freeresponse test at the end of the course

Atlee had the highest number of students (40) earn the diploma last year, higher than any of the other county schools. Atlee has had the longest-standing IB program in Hanover County. Our graduates have gone on to study medicine, work in law, publish articles and books, and work in government and education. Just ask our students!
