General Information

The High School Summer Program is offered to all Dublin City School district residents who will be incoming freshmen as well as all current high school students. Participation is voluntary, with each school day equal to approximately one week of class during the regular school year. For additional information, please read this brochure or contact the Summer Program office at 7606400. Please Note: This year there will be Friday classes for Physical Education and Credit Recovery.

The High School Summer Program offers online classes, OGT Classes, and Physical Education at Dublin Jerome High School (8300 Hyland Croy) OR Dublin Scioto High School (4000 Hard Road). Credit Recovery/GradPoint classes will meet at 62 West Bridge Street.

NO TRANSPORTATION IS AVAILABLE. Summer School students should enter Dublin Scioto High School Student Entrance (Stadium Side).

(for GradPoint, OGT & Physical Education) Daily attendance is extremely important. Classes have time requirements imposed by the Ohio Department of Education. One day of summer studies instruction is equivalent to approximately one week of regular school instruction. Accordingly, students who register for summer studies do so with the understanding that perfect attendance is a necessity. Students who plan to take vacation or may have other conflicts during the dates of the class should not enroll.  If your child is going to be absent, please call 718-8320 (Physical Education) or 760-4550 (GradPoint)  Students are permitted one (1) absence for a 13-day course. Additional absence will result in loss of credit, and NO refund will be issued.  Students who are tardy more than one-half hour of class will be considered absent.  Students who leave class more than one-half hour prior to the end, will be considered absent.  Final examinations will be given on the last day of each session. Attendance is mandatory for the last day of class. No exams will be given early. Registration: (Space is limited. Please register early)

Course Credit: Students are eligible to enroll for course credit if they: [a] have never taken the course before; [b] have previously taken the course but would like to repeat to receive a better grade; or [c] have previously taken the course but withdrew prior to completion.

If a course is repeated or made-up because of a failing grade, the grade will be listed twice on the transcript to accurately reflect academic activity. The higher of the two grades will be calculated in the cumulative grade point average (GPA). Courses Without Credit: There are some courses offered for which no credit is earned. Completion of the course does not appear on the student’s transcript and does not affect the student’s grade point average (GPA). ANY GRADE WILL APPEAR PERMANENTLY ON THE STUDENT’S TRANSCRIPT.

ONLINE CLASSES

Any Dublin student who has successfully completed 8th grade has the opportunity to take any of the following 19 blended courses. Students will meet face-to-face with the instructor on the first day of classes (June 9th and June 30th) and then by arrangement thereafter. After the initial meeting, students will be expected to complete a great deal of the coursework electronically and independently with teacher assistance provided as needed. Students will be expected to pace themselves in order to have all work for the class completed by the end of the three-week period. Students will need access to a computer and the Internet to participate in any of these courses. It is also strongly suggested a web cam and microphone be available for synchronous communication with teachers. Individual classes may have additional requirements. Please read the course descriptions carefully. A minimum of eight students must be registered for a class to be offered. Students must have completed the prerequisites listed to register.

The intent of the health course is to help young people make independent, informed decisions concerning their wellbeing. Course topics include problem solving, decisionmaking, communication styles, goal setting, values clarification, stress management, first aid and CPR, diseases and disorders, mental health disorders, nutrition, body system care and maintenance, organ donation, substance use and abuse, violence prevention, internet safety, and relationships including dating, refusal skills, dating violence and rape, functional versus dysfunctional family traits, birth defects and disabilities, conception, fetal development, labor and delivery, pregnancy prevention, and stages of adulthood. The online course combines lecture material with video instruction. Students will supplement learning by completing a variety of assignments that require independent research and exploration. The course is designed to take 90 hours to complete. Students are required to take the final written exam at Dublin Coffman or Scioto High School on June 27 or July 18, 8:00 - 10:00 a.m. This class can be taken either of the 3-week sessions.

ONLINE Sociology Prerequisite: None Course No HSA137OL1 st (1 Session) Credit: .5 Cost: $250 Session: June 9-27 This course is an introduction to sociology, the systematic study of people in groups, organizations, and societies. Sociology is concerned with how society affects individual people, and how individual people affect society. The course will examine theories, and concepts and methods within the science of sociology but will also examine issues such as poverty, family, violence, and racial inequality from the sociological perspective. After the initial meeting, students will be expected to complete the coursework electronically and independently with teacher assistance provided as needed. Students will be expected to pace themselves in order to have all work for the class completed by the end of the three-week period. The purpose of the course is to acquaint students with the basic structures of the U.S. and Ohio state governments and examine the relationship between these tiers of authority in a federal system. The course focuses on and applies the skills needed to become effective and participatory citizens. This course involves practical application through independent and active learning in an online environment, in addition to periodic meetings or office hours, which will be established depending on the need of the class. ONLINE Economics Prerequisite: Grades 10-12 Status Course No HSA174OL1 st (1 Session) Credit: .5 Cost: $250 Session: June 9-27 Basic economic concepts will be examined to generate a foundation for the study of microeconomics, macroeconomics, and the implementation of policy at the national and international levels. Emphasis, however, will be placed on the United States economy and economic policy decisions. This course involves practical application through independent and active learning in an online environment. Students will learn the difference between the ACT/SAT and their various applications. Students will learn to deconstruct test questions and increase their ability to decode challenging vocabulary in context. In addition, students will sharpen timed writing skills and develop personal goals and an individual study plan to address identified areas of improvement. Through these exercises, students will gain a set of tools that will be useful, both for test success and overall literacy development. While the focus the course will be on skills essential to succeed on the English, Reading, and Writing sections of the ACT and the Critical Reading and Writing sections of the SAT, the skills taught will be useful on all sections of these tests.

English I is the study of literary genres, non-fiction, and basic English skills. The course is aligned to the Common Core State Standards and prepares students for the PARCC assessments. The course stresses writing, vocabulary development, and research skills. Writing conventions are also taught through the writing process. This course is the foundation for all other courses in the language arts curriculum. Students will need to obtain several novels to complete the course, but the class textbook will be provided. All major unites and assignments from the traditional English I will be offered in the class, including semester and final exams. Students must have Internet access and should be extremely self-motivated and responsible in order to be successful in the class. Students who register will need to be able to attend a full day orientation on the first day of summer school. English IV is aligned to Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts in order to prepare students for college and career readiness. This course emphasizes writing development and strengthening skills necessary for effective communication. Revision and analysis in both reading and writing are key components that are explored through a variety of genres, speaking skills, literary periods, activities, and writing experiences. Opportunities for creative work, critical thinking, and purposeful collaboration are utilized to develop skills necessary in the post-secondary experience. The course also includes a study of graphing and algebraic manipulations, interpretations, and the meaning of linear and quadratic equations. Credit in this class satisfies the university articulation specification for an algebra background. Students will complete a series of instructional videos and assessments to complete this course. A TI-84 graphing calculator is used through the lessons and is highly recommended.

Algebra II expands the concepts learned in Algebra I with additional graphic interpretation using some geometric concepts. Students study real numbers, variables, equations, exponents, and functions. Skills are developed to evaluate algebraic expressions, to solve equations and verbal problems, to factor, to use the laws of exponents, and to draw and read graphs.

Environmental Science is offered in two semester units as a one-credit class. Environmental Science is a oneyear course in which students study the interactions among the physical, chemical and biological components of the environment. Students will use the scientific process to investigate the human impacts on the environment, sustainable living, using energy and feeding the world. Students will be required to submit digital images as evidence of their completion of certain investigations.

Geometry is the study of measurements and relationships among points, lines, planes, angles and shapes within certain properties of space. The course is aligned to the Common Core State Standards and prepares students for the PARCC assessments, ACT and SAT exams. This blended course has students complete a series of instructional videos that demonstrate both concepts and skills needed to be proficient in Geometry. Both online and face-to-face assessments will be completed in conjunction with the videos, having students meet with the teacher 2 or 3 times each 3 week semester. Credit in this class satisfies the university articulation specification for a Geometry background. Students must have Internet access and should be extremely self-motivated and responsible in order to be successful in the class. Students who register will need to be able to attend a full day orientation on the first day of summer school and take each Geometry common semester exam on the final day of each 3-week semester. The free online software GeoGebra and a TI-84 graphing calculator will be used in the videos but is not required for the course. Physical Science is offered in two semester units as a onecredit course. Students will self-pace through an exploration of basic chemistry and physics. Semester one focuses on laboratory practices and an introduction to chemistry and nuclear processes. Topics include the historical views of the atom, the periodic table, reactions, and acids and bases and cosmology. Semester two expands into the physics of motion, and energy. In this unit there is a focus on motion in one dimension, thermodynamics, waves and energy transformation. The online version of physical science includes self directed project based learning and the creation of digital objects as part of student evaluation. Online discussion and interaction with other students and the instructor will also be an important part of the course. This course provides excellent preparation for the student who expects to take Biology, Chemistry, and/or Physics in high school. (Requirements. The course will introduce students to Chinese sound system (pinyin) and Chinese writing systems (traditional and simplified characters), with the focus on the simplified characters. The class will emphasize the development of basic conversational skills. Additionally, reading and writing skills will be introduced and developed. The instruction will focus on distinguishing the four tones through listening and speaking practices, methods of decoding vocabularies, and using the language by understanding the fundamental grammatical patterns. The students will be introduced to the customs, holidays, the history and the geography of the Chinese-speaking world in order to help them become aware and begin to appreciate its vastness and diversity. With Chinese I as a foundation, students in Chinese II continue to build and expand their basic vocabulary and further develop and strengthen their communication and comprehension skills. Listening and speaking skills are emphasized via daily use of Chinese in the classroom and beyond. Reading and writing skills will be frequently practiced. Students will continue to gain Chinese historical and cultural knowledge. Highly selfmotivated students are recommended.

HIGH SCHOOL OGT TEST PREPARATION (JUNE 9-13, 2014 )

Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) June 16-20, 2014 The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) permits schools to administer the OGT each summer only to students who have already taken and failed the OGT. According to ODE policy, students are required to receive ten hours of intervention in each specific content area (Reading, Math, Writing, Science, Social Studies) in which they choose to test during the summer OGT administration. Students may fulfill their intervention requirement in up to two content areas through enrollment in the OGT Test Prep Courses below. Students may participate in all ten hours to fulfill the requirement. Enrollment in the Summer School test prep course automatically registers the student for the summer OGT. Those who elect to fulfill intervention requirements through other sources, must seek approval of the intervention and register to take the summer OGT by July, 2014 through the Director of Data and Assessment, Craig Heath, through email at [email protected] or phone call at 760-4335.

Students write short essays (narrative and expository) and study grammar through the writing process. A formal research paper and career exploration projects are required.

Students will study real numbers, variables, equations, exponents, functions, and series. Skills are developed to evaluate algebraic expressions, to solve equations and verbal problems, to factor, to use the laws of exponents, and to read and draw graphs. A scientific calculator is required; a graphing calculator is strongly recommended.

CR Geometry Semester 1 Semester 2 Course No.: HSCR3421 or HSCR3422 Credit: .50/.50 Cost: $225 per semester Time: 8:30 AM – 12:00 PM Dates: June 9-24, 2014 This course integrates the concepts of plane, solid, and coordinate geometry. The course deals with the properties of plane geometric figures. Using inductive and deductive methods of proof, students present proof of angle and line relationships. A scientific calculator is required.

Science Semester 1 Semester 2 Course No.: HSCR2051 or HSCR2052 Credit: .50/.50 Cost: $225 per semester Time: 8:30 AM – 12:00 PM Dates: June 9-24, 2014 Physical Science is a one-year course in which students participate in hands-on explorations in the fields of chemistry and physics. Topics of interest include the physics of sports, astronomy, plate tectonics, thermodynamics, sound, and light. Energy transformations, chemistry of the periodic table, and the conversation principals would also be covered in this course. Physical Science is an activity driven course with an inquiry approach that provides both meaningful and relevant explanation of the physical world. Credit for this course may be counted toward the requirements for college articulation.

Science Semester 1 Semester 2 Course No.: HSCR2131 or HSCR2132 Credit: .50/.50 Cost: $225 per semester Time: 8:30 AM – 12:00 PM Dates: June 9-24, 2014 Environmental Science is a one-year course in which students study the interactions among Earth's subsystems of water, air, land, atmosphere, and all the living components. Students investigate the similarities among Earth and the other planets, the unique position and characteristics of Earth in the solar system, processes that have shaped and continue to impact planet and environmental issues. This course integrates biology, chemistry, physics, and Earth science to characterize the picture of life on this planet.
