PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Chanukah, the Jewish festival of rededication, also known as the festival of lights, is an eight day festival beginning on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev. Chanukah is probably one of the best known Jewish holidays, not because of any great religious significance, but because of its proximity to Christmas. The story of Chanukah begins in the reign of Alexander the Great. Alexander conquered Syria, Egypt and Palestine, but allowed the lands under his control to continue observing their own religions and retain a certain degree of autonomy. Under this relatively benign rule, many Jews assimilated adopting much of Hellenistic culture, language, the customs and the dress of the Greeks. More than a century later, a successor of Alexander, Antiochus IV was in control of the region. He began to oppress the Jews severely, placing a Hellenistic priest in the Temple, massacring Jews, prohibiting the practice of the Jewish religion, and desecrating the Temple by requiring the sacrifice of pigs (a non-kosher animal) on the altar. We all know the story of Judah Maccabee, and how a small band of people overthrew the huge organized Roman army. According to tradition as recorded in the Talmud, at the time of the rededication there was very little oil left that had not been defiled by the Greeks. Oil was needed for the menorah in the Temple, which was supposed to burn throughout the night every night. There was only enough oil to burn for one day, yet miraculously, it burned for eight days, the time needed to prepare a fresh supply of oil for the menorah. An eight day festival was declared to commemorate this miracle by the small band of people who fought for their temple. At Monroe Temple, we need to stand strong as well. Are you willing to fight for our Temple? I have been pleading for someone to take over the Treasurer role and not one person will come to the table. This makes me both sad and angry. I know you all love this place as much as I do, but what are you willing to do to ensure our survival? During my Kol Nidre speech I spoke about volunteerism. I am serious. Without volunteerism our temple will not be here for future generations. Many of our elder temple members are retiring and leaving our congregation. What are we, the “younger” generation doing to fight to ensure that this place is here for our children and grandchildren? Come on! We’re all busy! Please I am begging you. Please step up- join a committee, get involved and say yes if you have ANY financial knowledge to becoming our Treasurer! L’Shalom, Mike Littman

TORAH SCHOOL Saturday December 5th is the 7th Grade Havdalah Service. The service will begin at 7:00pm in the Temple library. On Sunday December 6th, we will gather in the Social Hall during Torah School for a Chanukah Sing Along! Torah School teachers, students, and aides will also get to taste some Latkes on the 6th. Academy students will get latkes during Academy on Wednesday December 9th. Friday December 11 will be our Chanukah family service. Bring your own menorah and we will see what it looks like with many menorahs burning all at the same time! It should be bright being the 6th night! The service will begin at 7:30pm. Sunday December 20th will be the 7th Grade Yad Workshop. This is where 7th Graders design and assemble their own yads which they will use to read from the Torah. The Yads are made of silver plated beads and they bear the Hebrew names of our 7th Grade students. December 18th is our 5th Grade service. Our 5th Graders have been working hard on their Hebrew prayers all year, and on the 18th they will get a chance to show off to the congregation what they have been learning. The service will begin at 8:00pm. Finally on December 20th, at 7:00 pm, all Academy age students and parents are invited to Washingtonville High for a movie and panel discussion. The evening is open to all Reform and Conservative synagogue communities in Orange County, and will be funded by the Jewish Federation of Orange County. The movie is called “Crossing the Line 2”, and is a documentary explaining what drives anti-Israel tactics on college campuses. After the movie, there will be a panel discussion. In March The Federation will be offering a second movie and panel discussion. Jason Greenberg, Torah School Principal [email protected]

MENTSCH MAKERS What is the importance of a Jewish Pre-School? Jewish Pre-Schools are the Gateway to Jewish Life. Mentsch Makers Pre-School strives to provide children and their families the opportunity to explore their Jewish culture and offers the seeds for establishing Jewish identity, which is defined differently for each of us. Our program emphasizes a sensory approach to cultural Judaism and the Jewish holidays. We spend Shabbat on the bima with Rabbi Loeb, sing songs and learn along with our puppets Ralph, Af and Tapooz. Our delicious snack every Friday is challah. Thank you again to Sisterhood for your donation to cover our challah expenses. We celebrate Chanukah and Purim at our family programs. We learn at Family Programs, sing and have a great nosh. We cook and bake traditional Jewish foods. We create projects that fit hand in hand with our Jewish holidays such as making Tzedakah boxes, edible sukkot, dreidels, stained glass menorahs, Israeli flags, and sedar plates. We even make our own butter for Shavuot and plant seeds. Through these holiday and Shabbat activities that include songs, arts and crafts, music and cooking, we are enriching our families with Jewish traditions. Over the past 28 years we have found that most of our parents feel overwhelmingly positive about the Jewish pre-school experience and personally engage in more Jewish practices at home. And….when the time comes to graduate from Mentsch Makers, we have seen many of our families make the commitment to remain in a synagogue setting by becoming members and continuing with their children’s Jewish education. In addition to setting the Jewish foundation for our mentsches and their families, our pre-school helps to encourage growth in the following areas:  Social Development – this includes cooperating, sharing, making friends and interacting with other children and adults. This also includes learning to sit and listen as part of a group, following rules, and participating in an organized, routine and safe environment. Your little Mentsch also gains independence as he/she is encouraged to do things on his own.  Emotional Development – relates to maintaining a comfortable separation from parents, a feeling of self esteem and general happiness, and an eagerness to participate in school activities. This includes encouraging the child to verbalize his or her feelings towards others, resolving conflicts on his/her own, and developing the initiative in making choices and decisions about what to do and how to do it.  Cognitive Development – prepares your child for successful school experiences. This includes the development of reading readiness, math skills, and learning about social studies and science concepts. Your child develops listening and thinking skills. Mentsch Makers Pre-School along with its excellent teaching staff addresses all areas of growth and development.  Physical Development – includes gross and fine motor development, strength and agility and the appreciation of good health habits. The month of February is dedicated to Health and Safety with many visits from doctors, dentists, police/firemen, occupational/physical therapists as well as nutritionists.  Creative Development – emphasizes the skills that enable the child to develop new ideas and new modes of expression. This is accomplished through art, dramatic plays, movement and verbalization. Mentsch Makers is very proud to be your temple pre-school. The staff is dedicated to making this pre-school the best it can be!! We are in touch with the local school districts to stay abreast of new philosophies as well as to continue to explore the many ways to prepare our “mentsches” for kindergarten. We are certified in basic first aid as well as CPR for infants, children and adults. We have a beautiful and safe surface in our playground. All of our classrooms are bright and cheery. Our school prides itself on excellent teacher/student ratios. We offer your children the most we can through our curriculum as well as by giving plenty of tender, loving care (TLC) all the time. Mentsch Makers Pre-School offers classes from infants through Pre-K from 1 to 5 days per week. If you would like to donate a couple of hours a week and volunteer in any of our classes, share a special skill or just have a wonderful morning, please call and leave your name with the temple office. I will gladly invite you in for a visit. On November 20th, we held our PJ Tot Shabbat. We came to temple in our pj’s, sang and made a project. After all of that, we had milk and cookies. Yum!! On November 30th we had a fabulous Hanukkah puppet show for our whole school and their families. Thank you to Federation and Jewish Family Services for sponsoring this wonderful event. On Wednesday evening, December 9th at 5:30pm Mentsch Makers will be celebrating Hanukkah with a party in grand style. We are anticipating that 150 people will partake in our program, songfest, dancing, dairy dinner with latkes, of course and dessert made by our mentsches. We could not think of a happier way to prepare for this holiday season. Wishing you a very happy and peaceful Hanukkah and New Year. B’Shalom, Carol Berman Director

SISTERHOOD/WRJ As we reflect on this Thanksgiving about what we are thankful for, we realize how blessed we are. We have wonderful families, the sweetest children, great friends and a wonderful temple family with a sisterhood filled with the greatest group of women. Having the opportunity to co-lead as presidents has pushed us completely out of our comfort zone, and we are blessed that we have this opportunity. We have even taken up learning Hebrew this month. Sisterhood has had an amazing fall filled with great programs. In October sisterhood hosted its first Wine and Design. We had a wonderful turn out with 28 women eating, drinking and painting some beautiful masterpieces. What could be better than that? Thank you to everyone who supported this program and we hope to host another creative night in the spring. Thank you to Carol Nirenberg for putting together the first RAD program. This is a great self-defense class run by Detective Lee from the Monroe Police Department. Please contact Carol if you would be interested in learning these important skills. We are looking forward to our 2nd annual Hanukkah cookie bake and decorate program. It will be held on December 6th at 11:15am right after Torah School. This was a huge success last year and we hope for an even better turn out this year. A continued thank you to Gail Rivken-Green for all the help coordinating our sisterhood sponsored Onegs, and to Elyse Goldberg for learning how to navigate the world of Facebook. Our fabulous Judaica Treasures and Treats shop has a wonderful array of gifts for all your holiday needs. Please stop by or contact Shelly Sherman at [email protected] . Thank you Shelly Sherman, Ann Fink and Beth Cook for all your time and hard work. B’Shalom, Lisa Friedman [email protected] and Michelle Meyers [email protected]

MEN’S ACTION CLUB Shalom. We hope everyone had a festive Thanksgiving and was able to use the knowledge gained from our recent Wine and Cheese Tasting that we had on November 17th. The Wine and Cheese Tasting was well attended and everyone had a great time while learning about different wine and cheese pairings. Our next MAC meeting will be December 20th. If you haven't attended a MAC meeting in the past, please come out and join us for a bagel and a schmear and see what MAC is all about. What happens in MAC stays in MAC! Our Super Bowl Box fundraiser is well underway however there are still boxes available but don't procrastinate as the boxes are going fast. At this juncture we may have to start a second chart of boxes. We'd like to take a moment to wish everyone a Happy Hanukkah. Enjoy the holiday with your friends and family. L' shalom, Adam and Eric
