I Like to Cook Rabbi Nancy Myers I purchased some nice bright orange sugar pie pumpkins. I slice them in half and scoop out their seeds to reserve for roasting later on. As the pumpkin bakes in the oven, I knead flour into cold chunks of butter with my fingertips until I have dough. The pie crust chills in the fridge. Within a couple of hours, I puree the roasted pumpkin with cream, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, eggs, and brown sugar and fill my flaky crust with it. As it bakes in the oven, the spices fill the kitchen and house. Later, it becomes my perfect pumpkin pie. Even though I’m quite busy being a congregational rabbi and mom, I still take time to cook. I like chopping onions, garlic, and kale, mixing flour, almond meal, and sugar, and creating fantastic dinners for my family and friends. It is soothing and very gratifying. I find myself feeling lucky that I can obtain juicy kosher chicken, fresh rainbow chard, and varied ingredients to tantalize my taste buds. How lucky I am. How lucky are all of us. This month is the holiday of Thanksgiving. We give thanks for the harvest, for the pilgrims finding their way to America, for our luck in being born in a country of relative safety, security, and opportunity. Gratitude is also

Rachel and her siblings scoured the country side for berries in summer and hoped for a better life in America. Here I am. The great granddaughter of people who left Eastern Europe hoping that their children and grandchildren wouldn’t go to bed hungry. Not only do I not go hungry, I cook and bake with the passion of a gourmet chef. I feel so lucky that my ancestors were willing and able to leave all that they knew for a better future. I am thankful to God that I am alive and have two wonderful children. I am grateful for the easy winters in Southern California and the incredible beauty of the ocean, mountains, and desert. I am grateful to be living in the United States. A place where I could go to college and become a rabbi. In the Talmud, Ben Zoma in Berakhot looks upon a crowd on the steps of the Temple Mount. “Blessed be God!” He exclaims. “Adam had to go through so many labors just to eat. He ploughed, sowed, reaped, threshed, winnowed, ground, and then sifted flour just so he could have bread. If Adam wanted to wear clothing, he had to shear, wash wool, comb, spin, and weave it. I, on the other hand, rise in the morning and find all these before me.” How lucky we are to have shelter, clothing, and ample an inherent Jewish value. President’s Message

As we head into the Thanksgiving Holiday, we have much to be thankful about, so I thought I would spend a few moments offering my thanks.

VOLUNTEERS We are blessed here at TBD with an amazing group of volunteers. From our mitzvah corps, to those special people who help make our TBD events such as Onegs, Carnivals, Synaplexes (and the list goes on and on) possible- these events would not happen without you. Of course, I have to give a heartfelt thank you to the lay leaders who comprise our TBD Board of Trustees. The time, energy, and genuine caring for TBD's best interests are palpable at our board meetings. Special thanks also to the lay leaders of our TBD Foundation, the Brotherhood, Sisterhood, and Choir. All of you help keep TBD ticking. Finally, I want to express my sincere gratitude to our past presidents who are currently serving on the Board of Trustees who have provided me with guidance and valuable input these past few months.

MUSIC I hope everyone reading this was able to attend the Cantor's Concert a couple of weeks ago. It was an amazing night of music, and more importantly, of energy for our congregation. Our Cantor is such a gifted singer, but even more so than that, she is so generous with the spotlight. You can see it during high holidays and choir services when the Cantor is happy to have the choir (and often times soloists) lead the worship. The Cantor's Concert was no different. Being paired-up with Broadway star Ivan Rutherford really brought out the star in Cantor Linder. The evening's terrific performance by the national champion Sound FX show choir from Los Alamitos High School really made for a special evening of music, energy, and good will that I hope we will replicate soon.

OUR CLERGY AND STAFF Rabbi Myers genuinely cares about TBD and about each of us. She helps to guide TBD through changing times. But she can't act alone. In addition to Rabbi, our office staff, religious school director and teachers, pre-school director and teachers all help make this a great place to be. Thank you all for your efforts, your positive attitudes, and your hard work.

ALL OF YOU Without our membership, we are nothing. So thank you all for your support and enthusiasm. I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving. - Eric

ARZA

By Charlie Niederman

Association of Reform Zionists of America November/December 2016

Charlie Niederman, VP, Planning & Development

Rabbi Gilad Kariv, Executive Director of the Israel Movement for Reform and Progressive Judaism (IMPJ) addressed the Commission on Social Action of our Union for Reform on Monday morning the 11th of November. I was fortunate enough to be there. Rabbi Kariv is also a lawyer, and former director of the IMPJ's Israel Religious Action Center (IRAC) which takes stands on items important to the movement, and to democracy and equality.

Reform and Conservative Jews. Likud and UTJ (a coalition of ultra- Orthodox parties) drafted legislation that they believe meets the requirements of the court ruling, while keeping as much as they can of the status quo. The legislation provides that the use of public mikvahs in Israel will be under the supervision of the Chef Rabbi and conducted strictly according to halakha. The government will build four separate mikvahs for Reform and Conservative Jews, but may not pay for their upkeep or supervision as they do for the others. Rabbi Kariv believes that on this, the North American Jewish organizations have not spoken as strongly as they should, especially the Jewish Federations. Better communication with the Diaspora is required.

He was optimistic and described the accelerating growth of the Reform Movement, including the ordination of five new Reform Rabbis from Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem. Also, recent polls show that the majority of Israelis are aware of the Reform Movement and many of them have attended Reform services and ceremonies.

He said that new legislation is being planned in the Knesset to withdraw approval of Diaspora conversions. If he is correct and it comes to pass then it could seriously impact Diaspora relations. Rabbi Kariv also warned that the current government is spending many millions of dollars on a major program to export the Orthodox minority influence to the Diaspora, especially to Orthodox rabbis. It has not yet been set up in North America. He does feel that if it continues, in about twenty years it will change the quality of Diaspora Jewish life.

He described a seminal moment in the struggle to establish the egalitarian prayer space at the Kotel (Western Wall). The Presidents of URJ, of ARZA, Rabbi Kariv, and Anat Hoffman, the Executive Director of IRAC, accompanied by other rabbis, and lay leaders carried torahs into the women's section of the wall. For the first time ever, the women and men prayed and read Torah together at the Kotel. You can read more about it at the ARZA website at http:// www.arza.org/contents/kotel-campaign and there you can also sign the petition to Israel's leaders to honor the Egalitarian Prayer r area agreement negotiated in January. Rabbi Kariv said that the more the Ultra-Orthodox thought about Reform and Conservative Bar and Bat Mitzvahs at the Kotel, the more pressure they put on the governing coalition leaders to nullify the agreement. He felt that Prime Minister Netanyahu and his coalition will be comfortable if the Supreme Court forces them to take action so they can say that they were forced into it.

In response to a question about West bank settlements and Palestinian issue he said that the IMPJ was not taking positions because they want to be open to Israelis of all political persuasions. Currently on religious issues they also must deal with a Minister who leads the Jewish Home party that champions the pro settlement movement. On that topic the Knesset has approved three new settlements, giving them property rights and full government support.

Israel's Supreme Court found that state run mikvahs (ritual baths) must be made available to

To Our Temple Beth David Family: As most of you are aware, our Temple depends on donations to deliver the high quality of services to all of you. We understand that many of you are still struggling with the recent economic downturn. However, we have come up with a way that will allow you to donate to the Temple without spending a penny of your own money, plus you will actually save money on many purchases that you normally make! We would like to introduce you to Goodshop and Goodsearch. Goodshop works with more than 5,000 stores that will provide all of you with discounts on what you normally buy and then will donate up to 20% of the purchase price to the Temple. You will simply click on a link on the Temple Home Page, start saving money for your family and help the Temple out as well! We have included an easy step-by-step signup guide with this letter. Here are some examples of companies that participate in the program: Target, Macy’s, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Sears, Sak’s, Apple, Old Navy, the Gap, Amazon, Office Depot, Petco, Staples, Dell, The Limited, Holiday Inn, Groupon, Levi’s, Lands End, Best Buy, 1-800 Flowers, 24 Hour Fitness, and Victoria’s Secret.

These are companies that we all normally shop at, and by simply clicking on the link on the Temple website, you will be saving money for your family and actually raising money for the Temple. In addition, you can also save money by dining out at participating restaurants and, at the same time, raising donations for the Temple as well. It’s simple, free and easy to use, and the average family using the site over a year will actually raise more than $350 annually for the Temple. Multiply that by our 300 families and we will raise more than $100,000 per year for the Temple! This program really works. Goodshop has raised more than $11 million for charitable organizations with this program. Likewise, we are also rolling out Goodsearch. By doing your internet searches through Goodsearch.com, which links with Yahoo, the Temple will receive a penny for every internet search. If you can imagine how many internet searches you do, and your families do, this will also add up to real money for the Temple. We encourage all of you to participate and to help strengthen our Temple for all of us and for the generations to come. With best regards, Neil Kornswiet Ways and Means
