HAZAK HAPPENINGS By Robin Davidson On Sunday November 13 the Hazak committee was pleased to present the Singin’ Swingin’ Seniors in a musical revue, “Now & Then.” The cast - Len and Cooky Klein, Helene Tiger, Jaqui Chaskel and pianist Norman Ward - presented a vaudeville-style show featuring songs, dancing and jokes. The tunes were familiar but with lyrics describing contemporary life for older adults - addressing with humor topics such as grandchildren, cell phones, aging, computers and even one song dedicated to heartburn. Home baked treats were provided by Debbie Basner and Wendy Schneps. Hazak is the committee for older, active adults singles and couples, recent empty nesters, seasoned grandparents and anyone interested in having fun at our events. For information about Hazak please contact Lee Grebstein [email protected] or Robin Davidson [email protected].

“Ask the Rabbi” Everything You always Wanted to Know About Judaism… Ask and The Rabbi Will Answer! Dear Rabbi: Why are two candles, and sometimes more, kindled on Friday evenings, as the Sabbath begins? Light up My Life Dear Light: It is traditional to light two candles as Sabbath begins (kindled at least 18 minutes before sunset) The two candles represent the two references to the Sabbath found in the two-fold repetition of the Ten Commandments in the Bible. In Exodus, the commandment reads “Remember (zakhor) the Sabbath day to keep it holy”. In Deuteronomy, the fourth commandment reads “Observe (shamor) the Sabbath day to keep it holy”. Tradition, therefore, connects the two candlesticks to the two forms of Shabbat commandment. It is interesting to note that the L’cha Dodi prayer recited on Friday nights, harmonizes these two varying traditions by stating that G-d “in one breath uttered the words ‘observe” (shamor ) and “remember (zakhor)”. There are a variety of customs as to how many candles are lit – varying by community and family. Some light seven candles each week corresponding to the seven days of the week or to the seven-branched candelabra which was the focal point of the Temple in Jerusalem. In some homes, a candle is kindled for each member of the family. The Talmud encourages this custom in the words “the multiplication of candles (light) is commended as a blessing”. Whatever tradition we follow, let there be light to welcome each Shabbat! Your questions on Jewish life, law and lore are most welcome! Please submit them to Rabbi Buechler through the synagogue office. You need not sign your name, and names will also be withheld from publication on request.

From Our Rabbi

December, 2011 - January, 2012

Dear Friends: The story is told about Levine bragging to Schwartz about his new hearing aid. It’s the best one made – I now can hear and understand everything ! To which Schwartz inquires: what kind is it ? Levine responds:  3:15 !   What we hear and how we process the realities from the matrix of family, friends and community around us makes a pivotal difference in our lives. What kind of festival is Hanukkah is a proverbial question – and for many the answer, like the misheard what kind is it / what time is it, skews our response to reality. Yes, Hanukkah is a holiday of gift giving and joyous celebration. Every holiday in our faith incorporates joyous celebrations and an attitude of sharing and caring. Yet as we peel back the layers of Hanukkah which we celebrate as we kindle the candles on the first evening of Tuesday, December 21 and for a total of eight consecutive nights, Hanukkah is a different kind of holiday, with many unique facets.   Hanukkah is on one level a legendary holiday with a cruse of oil that lasted for eight days when the Hasmonean theocracy recaptured the Temple in Jerusalem in 165 BCE from the Seleucid dynasty. Kindling the flames of the Hanukkiyah (Hanukkah menorah) reenacts the drama of a wondrous time in Jewish history. Beyond the story is the real historical drama of revolution and revolt, and forces of intolerance coming into conflict with the visions of tolerance. The Hasmonean (Maccabean) leadership of Cohains (priests) had been uprooted from the Temple precinct with the introduction of Hellenistic and pagan practices. They rallied the masses of the Jewish people not to be passive, not to accept the practices incompatible with Judaism. In the process the first revolt for religious freedom and civil liberty was waged and triumphed

4

as the Hasmoneans recaptured Jerusalem and purified the Temple once again.    What kind of festival is Hanukkah ? It is one that places the emphasis on making the right choices – decisions that are both fateful and historic in nature. The very word Hanukkah means to dedicate as our ancestors cleansed and rededicated the Temple – an act of courage as the few overcame the many, the powerless overcame the powerful in the battle for religious tolerance. The cognate, etymological root,  of the word Hanukkah is to educate or inculcate. The ultimate wonder and miracle of Hanukkah is that in a world filled with distractions, temptations and seductions, the Maccabees educated and inculcated values into the hearts, souls and minds of their brethren to have them vision a Jewish future. That future involved sovereignty in the land of Israel, and that the Jewish people would control their destiny and adhere to values that at times can be counter-cultural, yet are a moral compass and light for each of us and the world.    The very act of lighting the Hanukkah menorah is an affirmation that Jewish values, moral clarity and a system of rituals teach ethics. Kindling the candles brings a sparkling light of time tested goodness, mitzvot and ethical imperatives to shine from the candelabra into our hearts, our homes and then as a guiding light to the world around us.    When it is the darkest time of the year, as the daylight hours are short and the cold of winter enfolds us, we set aside time to create light in order to dispel darkness. This is the mandate and miracle of Hanukkah. As we gather as family and light the Hanukkah menorahs, enjoy sizzling latkes and delectable sufganiyot (donuts) and sing the folk songs of Hanukkah, we also serve up a generous portion of Jewish values which light up our world.   There is no law that states that necessitates that gifts are given each night. Yet the values that

DHJCNEWS

Hanukkah inculcates shift our perspective into making certain that one night we give gifts to others – bring an unwrapped new toy to Second Night Out (Wednesday, December 21 @ 6:30 pm), donate to our Toys to Jerusalem 7th annual campaign, and contribute to a tzedakah of your choice to help others in the midst of our joy. Be sure to present a gift of Jewish content to your family/friends  – from Jewish apps, to Jewish music CD’s and great Jewish books (or downloads!) and Jewish periodicals (the gift that arrives all year) to quality Judaica from Kiddush cups to art works and fine kosher wines as well !   Most of all, share and care deeply about kindling the passion for Jewish life and values to those around you.  In a world where abuse and betrayal of morals are daily news stories from SAT cheating scandals to the ethical and moral failings of those in the news, Hanukkah is a chance to make the right choice as did the Maccabees. Articulate clearly and without ambiguity what we represent as a moral people guided by the light of Torah and the passion of Jewish history – and future.  Inculcate and teach by our actions the moral distinction between right and wrong in a universe where shades of gray predominate.    What time is it? It depends on the hour when you peruse these words. What kind of festival is Hanukkah? A timeless celebration of shining the light of moral clarity and religious tolerance into the hearts of our loved ones, into our homes and letting the lights of Hanukkah burn brightly into our world. Celebrate the joy of Hanukkah – of practicing the joy of Judaism and being exemplars of Jewish goodness for ourselves and our community.   Laura, Yael, Aviva, Hillel, Eliezer and Noam join me in wishing you and your loved ones a joyous, meaningful and brilliant Festival of Lights ! NOTES FROM THE HAZZAN

DHJC PRESIDENT This month we celebrate Chanukah, the Festival of Lights. It is a joyous time for all with lots of fun foods, such as latkes and doughnuts, the lighting of the menorah and exchanging presents. We celebrate the miracle, an event that manifested divine intervention, which enabled the Macabees to light their candles for eight days, while only having enough oil for one. Presently, lighting the Menorah and displaying it, lets the entire world know that G-d makes miracles for those who stand up for truth and justice. Join your fellow congregants and light our giant Menorah on December 21, Second Night Out at 6:30 pm. Be prepared to enjoy singing and dancing to a DJ, eat latkes, pizza and doughnuts and participate in “Dreidel Mania” – DHJC’s attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the most spinning dreidels at one time. Of course there will be giveaways for the children. Miracles also happen at the Dix Hills Jewish Center. Under the direction of Jay Danziger, we have finalized plans for a new, interactive website. Currently, we are gathering information, pictures and videos to place on this new and improved site. Shortly, you will be able to access synagogue events, religious school calendars, committee meetings, the newsletter, billing information and so much more from your computer. I am finding out what a humongous task it is to get all this information together to make it available, but we are making progress and I am hopeful in the next several months you will see the product of our efforts. Stay tuned. I am writing this article after attending an exciting fundraising meeting. Our major fundraiser for the year, “Casino Royale” will be held on March 10. It is not only a night of gambling and entertainment, but an evening of winning fabulous raffle prizes - TVs, IPods, Kindles, Cameras and so much more. The culmination of the evening will be a drawing for a cash prize of $10,000. By now, you should have received raffle books in the mail and I am optimistic that you will purchase a chance to be in this thrilling drawing. You do not have to attend the event to win, but do come and be a part of this fun and enjoyable evening. I know you will have a great time if you join us. Please support the DHJC and have a spectacular time as well. Programming events continues throughout the year. We have adult education programs, nursery and religious school activities, Sisterhood and Men’s Club functions, lectures, movies, concerts, Torah studies, Hebrew literacy... the list goes on and on. Is there an area that you would like us to explore? Please let me know by contacting me at bgr77@ aol.com. We are always seeking new venues to offer to our congregants. My theme throughout my Presidency has been one of community involvement. It is important that you feel that you are an integral part of this organization. Come to events with friends or without. The opportunity to meet new families and network is always present. Many of my dearest friends were met when my children were in the DHJC nursery school, over thirty years ago. We continue to share lifecycle events; both happy and sad. My DHJC family has played an important role in my life. I hope you can say the same.

Kristallnacht, the commemoration of the destruction of hundreds of synagogues by the Nazis on November 9, 1938, turned my thoughts to the Jewish community of prewar Germany and Austria; and I considered again how rich was the musical contribution of that community. I have written before of the great Hazzan Salomon Sulzer of Vienna, who transformed the music of the synagogue over his long career, wedding classical music forms to the melodies of our people. He was an admired composer, a superb artist of song, and a renowned teacher of cantors, who spread his music throughout the Jewish world. His melody for Sh’ma Yisrael is the “traditional” tune sung worldwide. In Berlin, composer and choirmaster Louis Lewandowski exerted the greatest and most enduring influence on music in the liberal European synagogues of the second half of the nineteenth century. He began his musical career at the age of twelve as a boy soprano in one of the synagogue choirs in Berlin, was “discovered” by a cousin of the composer Felix Mendelssohn, and after studies in the University became the first Jew to be accepted by the Prussian Arts Academy. His choral works are magnificent pieces that we still sing today. His settings of Mah Tovu, Tzadik Katamar, L’cha Dodi, the Friday Evening Kiddush, and many other compositions remain popular to this day; indeed, his music formed the backbone of the musical service in numerous European and American liberal synagogues for over a century. The development of instrumental and choral masterpieces, set in motion by Lewandowski, had the disadvantage of creating a situation in which the congregants withdrew more and more from active participation and became more spectators in the worship service. Although we sing some of his compositions, they do not have the “performance” quality that they would have had in his day. Our davenning style has become far more participatory. Another reason I am writing about these two wonderful musicians is that the Cantors Assembly will be sponsoring a major Musical Journey of Heritage and Healing to Germany and Israel this summer. Following the model of its historic Mission to Poland and Israel two years ago, the Cantors Assembly will once again serve as musical ambassadors of the Jewish People, studying, touring, and performing in Berlin and Munich. As in the previous Mission to Poland, congregants are invited to accompany the hazzanim. Those of you who saw the documentary of that trip, 100 Voices, may appreciate being a part of the tour. The experience will be extraordinary. I am hoping to participate in the Mission to Germany and would love to have you join me. If any of you are interested, please give me a call soon. I wish you a delightful Hanukkah and a warm, secular New Year blessed with Shalom. Hazzan Moshe Bear.

Happy Chanukah!

Dec 2011 - Jan 2012 President’s Newsletter Message With a new year upon us, lets reflect on what the word Sisterhood means. Sisterhood means many different things depending on where you are in life; Sorority girls, lifelong friends, or just women who share the same values, experiences and concerns. Whether we have reentered the work environment, are devoted to the care of an elder, or have chosen the everdemanding time constraints of motherhood, we are forced to make choices where to spend our time and energy. For the special people of our DHJC congregation who are members of Sisterhood, we thank you for you have chosen to share our “Sisterhood” with your already busy lives. Why you have made this choice? It must be, for your synagogue, friendships and because you are a knowledge seekers, social, fundraiser that share your time and talents for a multitude of deserving causes. From our rummage sale, to our “helping hand organization” M’Yad L’Yad, and Mitzvah day, we help struggling families all over Long Island recover from hardship. Our “Torah Fund” supports the Jewish Theological Seminary, which ordains all of our Rabbis and Cantors We support The Woman’s League for Conservative Judaism. our Synagogue, local community and our society. That’s the bond of Sisterhood. We make a difference. This year’s DHJC Sisterhood paid up Membership dinner was a little different. In place of our holiday extravaganza, we brought together dining, schmoozing, and hassle free shopping. We would like to thank all the committee members, Cara Kagan, Hillary Wohl, Wendy Schneps. Barbara Feinstein, Andrea Goldman, Karen Felber, Sheryl Gerber, Jessica Weiss who gave their time to organize this event, as well as Peter, Dominick and the staff of Regal Catering for adding a creative and delicious flare to the evening. In addition, we would like to thank Sheri Vishnick, for her annual dedication to organizing the DHJC sisterhood sponsored JASA holiday luncheon. She would not be able to do a beautiful luncheon without the sisterhood members who come and serve the seniors and Regal Caterers. We look forward to an exciting year of programs including speakers, mahjong nights, and comedy. Please look for the upcoming dates of all our activities and events through emails and our Sisterhood Chai Bulletin, coming your way soon. MEN’S CLUB Currently, the three most interesting Men’s Club words are:

“Programming, Programming, Programming” In the latest edition of Voices of Conservative/Masorti Judaism, Rabbi Charles Simon writes in his article titled What is Happening to Men? About the growing disappearance of Jewish men from today’s synagogue life. He writes …. “If we wish to change the attitudes and commitments of boys and more effectively engage them in Jewish life, appropriate strategies need to be developed and put into play. For nearly 30 years people increasingly have been asking, “Where are the men in the volunteer world?” But strategies of engagement have not been forthcoming because the issue is much more complicated than is generally believed.” Over the past several years, our Men’s Club has seen this trend first-hand especially when you look at head-counts at meetings and events. Numerous ideas have been suggested as to the reasons why - from the economy to the challenges facing Jewish men at various stages in their development. Initiatives were begun during their terms by past Men’s Club presidents, Michael Burstein and Steve Seener, to better understand the nature of the problem and what could be done about it. The solution that kept jumping out most was the need for developing more focused, flexible programs that recognized the diversity of our membership. To this end, the DHJC Men’s Club has decided to affiliate itself with the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs (FJMC). The FJMC is a partnership of over 250 affiliated Jewish men’s clubs with more than 20,000 members across North America dedicated to involving Jewish men in Jewish life. The FJMC will bring a host of new, diversified programming ideas that we will offer our membership program opportunities from 1) Hearing Men’s Voices 2) Men’s Club Shabbat 3) World Wide Wrap (Tefilin) 4) Community Service Week and much more. Stay tuned. Luckily, you don’t have to wait for some terrific programs. Over the next several months, the Men’s Club will be offering, presenting and getting you involved with the following:

On November 7th, two former Lone Soldiers Katie McCants and Daniel Schmidt spoke movingly and informatively about their experiences as immigrants to Israel and as members of Israel’s Defense Forces. Lone Soldiers, most of whom come from abroad and have no immediate family in Israel, benefit from programs of the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI), a beneficiary agency of UJA-Federation.

nursery The smell of latkes filled our school as our children and their families celebrated Hanukkah together, enjoying singing, dancing, and the cookies that the children baked. The menorah was lit and the children, teachers and families sang and danced to Hanukkah songs together. We enjoyed eating latkes, ice cream, and the special Hanukkah cookies that we baked in school as well as playing interactive games and activities. A great time was had by all! Our two-year-old children are learning about the changes around them while working on their winter book. Understanding cold weather animals and how they live will be explored by our three-year-old children, while they learned about opposites and dental health in enrichment. We enjoyed a new theme: nighttime. Since the days are short and the nights are long, the children made of list of all the things we see at nighttime, and they had some very good ideas! We created a nighttime mural as a class, with painted stars and the moon. We read books about nocturnal animals and how they live. We celebrated nighttime with a fun-filled pajama party! If you have any questions about life in the sea, just ask our four-year-old “marine biologists”, who now recognize the characteristics of many forms of sea life and how they survive. In our famous artists theme our children built an awareness of well-known artists, how they lived and recognize their artistic style. Our children were exposed to the works of several classical musicians, created their own musical instruments as well as sorting and classifying instruments. We introduced journals for using language skills and imagination to dictate stories to their teachers to enjoy reading together. Phonemic awareness and writing are incorporated into our program, sharpening pre-literacy skills through stimulating and creative activities. We will be having scheduled conferences in January. The three-and four-year-old teachers will be meeting with each parent

to discuss their child’s progress. We will be discussing the kindergarten orientation process and kindergarten expectations, and we have planned our enriched curriculum to include these skills. Our four-year-old classes will enjoy a visit from Mrs. Adams of the Half Hollow Hills Library. Her literacy program will include storytelling, fingerplays and movement activities. The children are excited about our synagogue lending library where they select and read books to take home. Our three-year-old children will be visiting the library later in the year to enjoy a planned literature program. Registration for our Fall 2012-2013 programs will be starting in January. We are also accepting registration for our fun-filled Summer program run by our experienced and nurturing staff. There is a special theme each week, as well as our popular pony rides and petting zoo that the children love. We will be offering dynamic programs for our three-and four-year old children, as well as children entering kindergarten. Our Summer Mommy & Me has been very popular, and we are very proud of our unique Summer Mommy & Me Separation Program, where our toddlers learn to separate slowly and with confidence. We are proud to offer our new Summer Bridge program, which will consist of three days per week of fun filled activities for the two weeks between school and camp. Happy Birthday to Jesse Brooks, Justin Cohen, Robert Gentili, David Glorioso, Ethan Greenblatt, Galina Hellman, Cory Jacobs, Gavin Krivoshey, Parker Krugman, Gavin Krivoshey, Julia Oberlander, Sophie Platt, Aidan Rubin, Taylor Shield, Daniel Steinberg, Hannah Steinberg, Lauren Vishnick, Chloe Weissman and Abby Wynn! Best wishes for a Happy and Healthy New Year!

My Dear Congregants, A very vibrant school, like our Hebrew School, really keeps you on your toes all the time. We, as educators, are challenged to come up with programs and activities to keep our children’s interest. And it is not only the children. We strive to have an involved community of parents. That is why we offer a program almost every Sunday morning. The greatest reward is to see parents and children studying and creating things together. We offer Mishpacha (Family) programs geared to every age group with its specific needs and interest. We also have our DaF learning experiences which offer journeys through the Bible with the Rabbi, Debra (our new Family educator) and me. Our School year started with a Mishpacha program for each grade. Each student and his parents are expected to attend several programs during the school year. This is a very vital part of our school’s curriculum. Our Gimel and Dalet classes had a very interesting experience during

28

their Rosh Hashanah Programs. The program dealt with new Bee-ginnings. The guest speakers were two bee lovers, who grow bees and make honey. They gave the children and parents a full demonstration of the bees, and it was very interesting. Our Vav students’ subject was “My Jewish Home” and they studied what makes their home Jewish. Our Hay class’ program was before Yom Kippur and was called: “Teshuvah- Turning it Sweet” During the holiday of Sukkot, we had: “Pizza in The Hut”, the Mutual Happening for the Hebrew and the Nursery Schools that we launched last year. The occasion: The beginning of the year, and the holiday of Sukkot. All were invited to have Pizza in the Hut; face painting and dancing to the D.J.’s music. We had a big crowd and everybody had a great afternoon. Mitzvah Day is also an opportunity for our children to come and study how to give and share. We had two of our girls donating their hair to Locks of Love: Sarah Pomerantz and Allison Silibovsky. Kol Hakavod to you girls for such a beautiful deed. Others helped

to assort the books for Israel, to write cards for soldiers and so many other activities. Our Tzedakah Project is our Coat Drive: Coats for Kids. We are collecting coats for the needy children, and each child who brings in a coat- gets a paper coat on the wall with his/her name. Thanks to all of the coat donors. Next month we are starting with our class services. First will be the Vav Kabbalat Shabbat service, and then we will have Dalet and Hay with their Havdalah Services. We are looking forward to the exciting programs and happenings we are going to have in the coming months. All the best, Ricky

The History of the Dreidel The traditional Chanukah dreidel (spinning top) is a throwback to the times when the Greek armies of King Antiochus controlled the Holy Land, before the Maccabees defeated them and sent them packing. The powerful regime passed a series of laws outlawing the study of Torah and many of the mitzvot. The Jews were compelled to take their Torah learning “underground,” for they knew that a Jew without Torah is like a fish out of water. Jewish children resorted to learning Torah in outlying areas and forests. Even this plan was not foolproof, for the enemy had many patrols. The children therefore brought along small tops that they would quickly pull out and play with after secreting away their texts, so that they could pretend to be merely playing games. Our Chanukah dreidel games are a salute to these Jewish heroes of yore.
