25th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle C) A Sunday Reflection Who do we serve By Fr. Luis

The readings of today present to us an opportunity to become advocates for the poor and vulnerable. Christianity in the light of Jesus Christ has tried to be a defender for peace and justice. The Catholic Church is the voice of the poor with a rich tradition as no other institution. Many of our great Saints have given their lives serving those who suffer. Today we have the opportunity to support and continue to be defenders of the poor and voiceless. Let's try to be merciful as our Father is merciful.

THE DIGNITY OF THE HUMAN PERSON Human life is sacred because every person is created in the image and likeness of God. Every human being “must always be understood in his unrepeatable and inviolable uniqueness . . . This entails above all the requirement not only of simple respect on the part of others, especially political and social institutions and their leaders with regard to every man and woman on the earth, but even more, this means that the primary commitment of each person towards others, and particularly of these same institutions, must be for the promotion and integral development of the person” (Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church, no. 131). “It is necessary to ‘consider every neighbor without exception as another self, taking into account first of all his life and the means necessary for living it with dignity’ (Gaudium et Spes, no. 27). Every political, economic, social, scientific and cultural program must be inspired by the awareness of the primacy of each human being over society.”

Saints this Week/Santos de la Semana Saint Paul Chong Hasang, September 20, one of the Korean Martyrs. He was about to be ordained a priest when persecution broke out. Ordered by the judge to renounce the faith, he replied, "I have told you that I am a Christian, and will be one until my death." Bound to a cross on a cart, Paul cheerfully met his death on September 22, 1839. St. Matthew Apostle and Evangelist, September 21. Born in Capernaum, he was a tax collector when Jesus called him to follow him. He wrote his gospel originally in aramaic, proclaiming Jesus as son of David. Tradition has it that he preached in the east.

The Jubilee of Mercy

El Jubileo de la Misericordia By our efforts alone, we cannot be reconciled to God. Sin truly is the expression of the rejection of his love, with the consequence of closing in on ourselves, deluding ourselves into thinking that we have found greater freedom and autonomy. Far from God we no longer have a destination, and we are transformed from pilgrims in this world to “wanderers”…. Jesus comes to find us like a good shepherd who is not content until he has found the lost sheep, as we read in the Gospel (cf. Lk 15:4-6). He rebuilds the bridge that connects us to the Father and allows us to rediscover our dignity as children. By the offering of his life he has reconciled us to the Father and given us eternal life (cf. Jn 10:15). Pope Francis Jubilee Audience, April 30, 2016
