2011 Review Since our last Review the issue of social mobility has rarely been off the front pages. Like Rugby many independent schools were founded with charitable intent and have, throughout their history, provided transformational opportunities for their pupils, advancing the cause of social mobility. Most schools provide bursaries but we believe our approach continues to be radically different.

Our long-term pastoral engagement with the young people we support continues to be crucial to improving performance and raising aspirations, and this support is offered to families as well. At Rugby, Arnold Foundation pupils benefit from the same pastoral care as all pupils but in addition they have older pupils as mentors and dedicated Arnold Foundation tutors. Indeed, the pupils are so well integrated that many pupils and staff don’t know which pupils at Rugby are supported by the Arnold Foundation.

For details of all events see page 8 We have a clear aim of 10% of pupils funded either through the Lawrence Sheriff bequest, for day pupils, or through the Arnold Foundation for those in boarding places and are well on the way with 9% of the School currently being supported in this way. We have come a long way since the Foundation was established in 2003. To date more than £10.3 million has been raised and there are currently 30 Arnold Foundation pupils in the School, with 60 who have benefited in total. A really interesting development in recent years has been the support we have gained from people with no Rugby connection at all. This has been extraordinary and is an area we very much hope to grow in the years ahead. Our endowment has been given a significant boost this year following a generous donation from a Midlands based charitable trust; we are extremely grateful for this gift. A special fund has been established and the income will be used to support Arnold Foundation pupils coming from Nottingham. The pupils are thriving and exam results this year have been good. Of the seven Arnold Foundation pupils who completed their final year at Rugby in July, one is at Brasenose reading PPE, another studying Law in Brighton and a third starting a degree in Cardiff in Sports Science. Others are taking GAP years before continuing their education in 2012. We keep in touch with former Arnold Foundation pupils and news is positive with our first three university graduates this summer. Of the others who have left Rugby, most are at University (including one at Cambridge and two at Oxford) or on a GAP Year and one is a professional rugby player. One former pupil said: “The myriad of experiences Rugby gave me, and the aspirations it inspired, have been invaluable.”

For the families, we remain grateful to our volunteer parent coordinator who sees Arnold Foundation parents on a regular basis and is always happy to talk to families offering independent support and advice. In the future we are hoping to involve all parents in more activities both at School and elsewhere. For the first time this year, our social and fundraising activities will be supported by a new group of Parent Ambassadors who are all donors themselves and have kindly offered to assist with information and events and some parents have volunteered to be guardians for overseas pupils; we thank them all for their involvement and support. We have made significant progress but remain ambitious and are currently looking at how we might share our experiences in the most effective manner. Many schools believe they should be widening access and offering more means-tested bursaries; it makes them better schools and is the key to social mobility for talented pupils. If 10% of all children are educated in independent schools, and 10% of those are in Arnold Foundation places, then 1% of the population could expect to have wider access and contribute positively to many communities in the UK.

If you will.

They can.

A number of new legacy commitments were made during the year and we are very grateful for this future support. We hope that all Rugbeians, parents and friends of School will include the Arnold Foundation in their Will and you will find more information on the back page of this Review.

The Foundation does not seek gifts for capital projects “My greatest achievement this term has been vice-captain of the XV and helping lead the team to victory on most occasions throughout this season.

So we are exploring ways of establishing a scheme through which we can share best practice but at the same time continue to build the solid and successful Arnold Foundation programme at Rugby School. We are extremely grateful to all our generous donors and supporters who have helped make the Arnold Foundation so very successful but still have a great deal to do and very much hope we can rely on your continuing support in the future.

Supporting the Arnold Foundation for Rugby School 2011 Facts and Figures Rugby is one of the UK’s leading co-educational boarding schools, founded in 1567, which maintains the tradition of innovation in all areas. It is an all round School which values academic excellent, service to the community and which seeks to broaden access and promote tolerance and understanding. Pupils In 2011/12 Rugby has 802 pupils between the ages of 11-18, of whom approximately 80% are boarding. There are 15 senior houses: 8 for boys and 7 for girls including 2 day houses and a separate day house for junior (11-13) pupils. The current boy: girl ratio is 55:45%.

Teaching Staff With 109 teaching staff, Rugby’s current pupil: teacher ratio is 7.36 :1.

Fees At September 2011, Rugby’s fees are £9,725 per term/£29,175 per annum for boarders and £6,060 per term/£18,080 per annum for day pupils (at 13+).

Scholarships and Bursaries In 2011/12 264 pupils (32.9% of the total) will receive a scholarship or bursary at an estimated cost of £2.1 million.

Finances •

The School’s July 2011 consolidated Balance Sheet showed net assets valued at £88.8 million, including School properties (at net book value) of £27.1 million and investments (at market value) of £57.9 million.

The annual cost of running the School is approximately £19.9 million and the objective of meeting this from gross fee income is being achieved. The major elements of annual costs are teaching (approximately 41% of total), pupil welfare (17%), premises (26%) and support (11%).

In 2010/11, the School’s consolidated net incoming resources after scholarships, bursaries and prizes of £2.165 million was £3.134 million.

A full copy of the School’s audited accounts may be obtained from the Charity Commission’s website (www.charity-commission.gov.uk) or by writing to the Bursar at the School’s registered address.

Involving Parents Over the years, Rugby parents have been amongst our most enthusiastic supporters so, in the Trinity Term, we launched a new programme of Parent Ambassadors. The idea sprung from a group of parent donors who were keen to involve more parents so they too could share in the success of the Foundation. Indeed, anecdotal evidence has repeatedly centred on the School’s approach to widening participation as a key reason why parents selected Rugby for their child. The Parent Ambassadors knew, therefore, they would be appealing to a receptive audience. While there are parents unable to donate, there are many more who would if they knew a little about the life transforming work of the Foundation, the benefits it provides to all pupils in the School, and indeed if they were asked. All parents who have made a donation to the Arnold Foundation are invited to become a Parent Ambassador and attend one of the regular briefing sessions; a list of Parent Ambassadors is published on the parent portal but in summary their role is to promote the aims of the Arnold Foundation amongst the parent group and to encourage support through attendance at events and donations to the Foundation. The briefing lunches with Arnold Foundation pupils attending have been useful and much fun.

“I thought the luncheon was brilliant. I talked with three very animated students and walked away impressed by their confidence, humour and conversation. The School should be very proud.”

Mary Mitchell, LXX Parent Ambassador Cindy Holmes (D 78-80), past and present parent and Parent Ambassador, hosted a Breakfast in the Advent Term for the leaving XX parents, appealing to them to donate their deposit which was paid when their child was offered a place here. Parents of the 2011 leavers donated a magnificent £42,598 which will help fund the September 2012 intake of Arnold Foundation pupils. The flagship event for 2012 will be a Celebration Dinner on Friday 4 May. The event, organised by parents, will commence with a champagne reception in OBS followed by a superb four course dinner, including wine, in the TSR ‘as you’ve never seen it before’. A guest speaker will mastermind the proceedings, to include a Big Gift and Silent Auction. We are very grateful to our generous sponsors for the evening who have ensured that all the proceeds from the ticket sales will be used to support the Foundation’s life transforming work. We continue to seek auction gifts especially items or activities that cannot normally be bought. Please contact Jacqueline Krarup in the Development Office, [email protected], if you can help.

Property Scrummage The Scrummagers continued to meet on a regular basis, captained by front row hooker Jeremy Newsum (Sh 68-72). The Scrum organising team, bolstered by two new recruits in 2011, Jon Vivian (SF 68-72) and Ed Inder (T 90-96), has now raised over £85,000 from Rugbeians who are working in the property sector. The fund is supporting an Arnold Foundation pupil in the School who is currently in the E Block. The Scrummagers are keen to ensure they will support ‘their pupil’ when she moves into the LXX. Whilst the backs are gathering strength, they could still benefit from a good shove by one or two props to score the winning try. Given the opportunities presented by the regular and new events planned for Rugbeians working in the sector in 2012, they are well placed to succeed.

1567 Regular Giving Donating regularly on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis is one of the very best and easiest ways in which you can support the work of the Arnold Foundation for Rugby School. It’s simple to set up, the payments are collected automatically and administration costs are minimised. The benefit to us is that it allows us to plan for the future. Having a predictable and regular income stream from our 1567 donors is very helpful and means that we can plan Arnold Foundation recruitment with confidence.

“Things are going well this term and my favourite thing about boarding life is living with my friends. Over the Christmas break I hope to meet up with my friends from Rugby and from my previous school. My aims for next term are to do well in my divinity mock and other subjects and exams.”

Arnold Foundation pupil in the Lower School

During 2011 we increased the income through monthly giving by 50% on the previous year and ensured that an additional pupil was supported. We are particularly

grateful to Rugbeians and parents who have continued, or renewed, their donations after their initial pledge period expired. Many new donors, who have pledged their regular donations in response to the variety of fundraising initiatives undertaken during the year, including the Property Scrummage, Parent Ambassador programme and regional group activities, have been welcomed. We are hugely grateful for continuing support. The most cost effective way for you to set up, or increase, your 1567 regular gift to the Arnold Foundation for Rugby School is by completing the enclosed gift aid form and returning it to Jacqueline Krarup in the Development Office, [email protected].

The cost of supporting a pupil at Rugby School The current cost of supporting one boarding pupil through the Arnold Foundation for Rugby School is £31,000 per annum. This is calculated at 100% of fees with provision for all essential extras including uniform, laptop, books and course trips.

Every gift will make a difference

Working with Partner Organisations Underpinning our approach is a genuine desire to transform lives and to raise aspirations. The other two key features of our approach are a proven ability to find the right pupils and recognition that it is a long-term pastoral engagement with young people that is the key to transforming lives.

they need to achieve their full potential. Importantly, these charities also provide support in the holidays and the transition between school and home is carefully managed. They use Arnold Foundation pupils as role models so the impact of our work goes beyond the pupils themselves. The aspirations of family members and members of the local community have also been raised.

Press coverage earlier this year recorded findings that many schools were struggling to find pupils to take up bursary places on offer. Some said “this shows the demand from parents is simply not there” but this could not be further from the truth. There is a real need and demand but the challenge is identifying the right pupils. At Rugby we are not interested in simply cherry picking the brightest children from maintained schools. Instead we want to help those who stand to gain the most from a boarding education and who can later become role models and leaders within their own communities. So we do not advertise for pupils - this simply does not work - but we engage principally with partner organisations. Our continuing work with educational charities in inner-city areas, who are dealing first-hand with the very real issues of social exclusion and underachievement and who share our commitment to raise aspirations, is crucial to our success.

We did not expect that schools in the maintained sector would also want to work with us but have been thrilled to establish partnerships with a number of schools. Our links with the secondary school in Tower Hamlets have flourished and the Head Master spent a day with staff and pupils there earlier this year. The Head of a maintained school in Scotland said that no independent school in Scotland had ever spoken to him professionally. He wanted to be associated with Rugby because of our shared values and aspirations. He could see that the link with Rugby was an opportunity for his pupils that could only bring benefits to all concerned, helping the whole school community look beyond the local area on to a world full of opportunities that are there for all who are prepared to work hard. Another Scottish Head, where just 10% of his school go on to higher education, said the benefits to the school, and the town, were incalculable and our relationship helps

Recent Arnold Foundation Graduates Rebecca Glockner (St 04-06) has graduated with a 2:1 in German and Greek at King’s College in London. After a year studying drama at the Drama Studio in London, where her stage name is now Rebecca Bell, she has a place at the LSE on an MSc course in Social Anthropology. Greg Taylor (M 05-07) was awarded a first class honours degree at Loughborough University in Accounting and Financial Management, with a Diploma in Professional Studies, and is now working for Ernst & Young and studying for ICAS exams. Francesca Odongkara (G 05-07) who featured on our DVD graduated from Loughborough University with a BSc in Design and Materials Engineering. She is now applying for roles near her London home, and working closely with the Development Team to create a programme for former Arnold Foundation pupils.

The established alliances with IntoUniversity and the Eastside Young Leaders’ Academy are flourishing. IntoUniversity aims to address underachievement and social exclusion among young people through an integrated programme of out-of-school study, mentoring, aspirational coaching, and personal support and, in partnership with universities, specially devised FOCUS weeks, days and weekends. It currently operates from six centres in London, the first one in North Kensington (where of course Rugby School has strong links going back to the nineteenth century). Expansion is planned across London and beyond with three centres opening in Nottingham in 2012 followed by centres in other parts of the UK. At the heart of the IntoUniversity programme is the belief that underachievement is best addressed in the context of a long-term pastoral engagement with young people. These values are similar to those of the Eastside Young Leaders’ Academy (EYLA). Founded in 2002 and based in the East End of London, EYLA works to nurture the leadership potential and improve the life chances of young African and Caribbean males with the clearly stated aim of ‘empowering them to become the next generation of successful leaders’. Working with these charities has been central to our success and has enabled us to reach out to young people for whom boarding is a remote concept. These organisations help in identifying suitable candidates and are fully involved in the whole application process. Boarding at Rugby liberates these pupils from domestic constraints and provides them with the support and encouragement

him address the “poverty of ambition” that he deals with on a daily basis. The ripple effect continues to be strong and we hope it will encourage our many donors and supporters. We have also developed partnerships with five Prep Schools interviewing Arnold Foundation candidates when they are in Year 6 and assuring them of a place with us after two years at the Prep School. And there is growing interest in what we are doing from universities too which are keen to learn from our experiences most particularly the way in which effective partnerships have been established.

“This term has been great. The thing I am enjoying most is probably the access to the facilities and staff most of every day which is extremely helpful with my studies. Also, the staff themselves have proven to be ever so helpful during tough times of homesickness and also when I was rather ill.”

Arnold Foundation pupil in the Upper School

There is no doubt that working with partner organisations is the key to the success of the Arnold Foundation and our partners recognise, as we do, that if a bursary scheme is to be really effective then they must do more than just help out with the school fees.

“The best thing about boarding life at Rugby is the social aspect of being with your friends for most of the year and after lessons. Also the house feels like a community and the competitiveness has pushed us to win many events like the push cart this term and athletics last term.”

“Boarding life is very interesting, fun and has similarities to home life yet on a grand scale. I am in a boys house of 50 boys and they are almost like family as I see them every day. We all eat together three times a day and participate in sport in house in our fancy astro-quad as well as in sports teams. I think that boarding teaches young people a lot of values particularly tolerance, respect and understanding. What do I enjoy most about boarding life? I enjoy the sense of independence. My rugby team (2nd XV) are undefeated this season; something that hasn’t been seen for at least 15 years. I will also be doing my Grade 3 Piano exam next term and am only able to have piano lessons thanks to the Arnold Foundation.”

“The aspect of Rugby School that I enjoy most is being independent. Although you live in a boarding house and have to live by set rules, you still get a sense of independence and freedom that you otherwise wouldn’t have at home. Next term I hope to work as hard as possible to maximise my chances of getting good grades in the summer. Over the last few weeks I have received good university offers.”

Friends of Rugby School

The American Friends of Rugby School continues with a full program of fundraising and events under President Michael Whitcomb’s guidance the 2011 Arnold Foundation Challenge and is currently underway. This fundraising initiative has been generously supported and last year the Challenge raised $123,000 which was granted to support bursaries through the Arnold Foundation. The social calendar opened with pub evenings at the beginning of the year. East Coast friends endured subzero temperatures on an enjoyable evening in February. This was followed later that month by a less chilly outing for those on the West Coast and in May by an inaugural evening for Rugbeians in Chicago organised by Nick Spencer who is new to the team.

Just two days later, a group of 24 gathered first at the home of Michael and Julie Whitcomb in San Francisco for champagne and wines furnished by Laurence and Terry Sterling of Iron Horse Vineyards and afterwards at a nearby French bistro, Le P’tit Laurent, for a sumptuous meal. Good wine and great conversation flowed freely and guests left declaring another such outing was needed soon!

Scottish Friends of Rugby School

In September this year, three pupils from Hawick High School joined the LXX at Rugby School and we are delighted that Scottish pupils will benefit from the opportunity offered by the Arnold Foundation.

The David Harvey Laboratory On Tuesday 20 September, David Harvey's long-time companion Patricia Duncan, his brother Andrew Harvey (C 58-63) and sister Diana Mather visited Rugby to celebrate the naming of The David Harvey Laboratory. David Harvey (C 51-54) retained a strong affection for his old School and science tutors throughout his life. Despite the end of his formal science education when he left Rugby, he went on to build very successful engineering companies in the USA. David believed the values he acquired at Rugby School stood him in good stead throughout his life.

More formal events followed. In mid October, Tim Butcher (K 80-85) kindly made time in his busy schedule to talk about his new book, ‘Chasing the Devil’ describing his recent 350 mile journey on foot through the back country of Sierra Leone and Liberia. Around 30 Rugbeians and friends gathered at UBS's offices on Avenue of the Americas in New York enjoying a few glasses of wine and chatting afterwards to Tim about his adventures. When the evening broke up a smaller group retired for dinner at the Fig & Olive where many entertaining memories of Rugby were shared. Patricia Duncan has very generously continued to support the School in David's memory with a gift to the American Friends of Rugby School. This has been given to the School as a grant to support pupils through the Arnold Foundation and is acknowledged through naming a laboratory in the Rugby Science Schools. We are hugely grateful for her commitment. For more information and news of activities please visit the website at

It was good fortune that, after contact being made early in the year, three pupils emerged with outstanding qualifications and Rugby was anxious to take all of them with Scottish Rugbeians and Rugby parents funding one of the pupils and the Arnold Foundation centrally taking responsibility for the other two. The School is now working with a small number of partner schools in Scotland to identify pupils for 2012 onwards. For the future, the financial objective of the Scottish Fund is to support two pupils in Arnold Foundation places in the sixth form at Rugby School, with one new pupil joining the LXX each year. We hope all Scottish Rugbeians and parents will feel able to contribute and we welcome their support.

We were delighted that the first two Arnold Foundation pupils supported by the Hong Kong Friends of Rugby School were able to join the F Block in September. They have settled in well and enjoying all that Rugby has to offer and we are very grateful for the generous donors who fund their places at the School. Interviews for 2012 entrance took place during the Head Master’s recent trip to Hong Kong in November and we look forward to a third pupil joining Rugby next year. The social programme has continued under Dominique Whitehead’s guidance and two major events took place during the year starting with a Cocktail Reception for all Hong Kong Rugbeians, current pupils and parents at The Pawn in April. On a lovely warm evening in early November the annual dinner was hosted at the Shek O Country Club on the grass and under lanterns. Cocktails and a welcome by the Chairman John Li (B 69-72) were followed by a delicious meal after which the Head Master Patrick Derham spoke of Rugby's continuing successes and the ongoing work of the Arnold Foundation.

“Things are going really well. I’ve made some really good friends. Everyone here is so nice and I feel so welcomed and I enjoy chatting with my friends in house. My academic work is going quite well. I got a distinction in my Greek test. Also, I got a 100% in my maths test recently. I am really glad about it! During the Christmas break, I will fly back to Hong Kong and have some rest. I will meet my friends and relatives. I am so looking forward to it! Next term, I hope I will do well at netball.”

Arnold Foundation pupil in the Lower School Representatives from many different decades of Rugby, ranging from the early 1960s to a recent leaver attended and it was great to see such a wonderful turnout, including some Rugbeians who came all the way from Shanghai and those on business in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Friends of Rugby School is continuing to work hard to raise funds to support deserving underprivileged Hong Kong children at the School and, with funding now in place for the pupil starting in 2012, is looking for commitments for future years. More information and news of activities will be posted on the website at www.hongkongfriendsofrugbyschool.net

We last met in February at the Edinburgh Residence and are now planning our 2012 Edinburgh Reception which will be on Friday 3 February 2012, at The New Club, the day before the Calcutta Cup match at Murrayfield. If you would like to know more about how to support a pupil coming from Scotland or would like to join us on 3 February please contact the Development Office at Rugby School.

Unrestricted donations are used to support UK pupils. Overseas pupils receive specific support. “I have to say that you are welcomed almost instantly into the environment. Especially if you have never boarded before, it increases your confidence a lot. When the other members of the house are friendly to you and treat you well, it feels like home.”

Finance Sector Drinks Reception On Monday, 24 January 2011 we held our second Finance Reception with almost 150 Rugbeians and parents attending. The event was kindly sponsored and hosted by Eversheds LLP in their new London office.

We were delighted to welcome Sir Matthew Pinsent CBE as our guest speaker, and to hear him speak so passionately about our theme of 'Raising Aspirations' and his Olympic experiences.

The launch of the Rugbeian Under 30s On a chilly January day more than 110 young Rugbeians gathered at the Thomas Cubitt in Belgravia to celebrate the launch of the Rugbeian Under 30s. The evening of drinks and canapés was hosted by the School. Will McCaw (W 95-00) welcomed all guests and Peter Welch (Sh 75-80) reminisced about time at Rugby.

Eighth Arnold Foundation Lecture Sir Clive Woodward OBE is of course best known for leading the England team to glory in the 2003 Rugby World Cup and is currently the Director of Sport for the British Olympic Association.

The evening was a huge success and in September was followed by a second gathering this time hosted by Geoff Leong (Sh 90-95) at his excellent restaurant Hi Sushi in Camden Lock. With a slightly younger group attending, and much fun recorded by Harriet McCaw (B 01-06) (and many images on the website), work is well underway for a programme of two events each year with the next booked for mid January. We were privileged to receive him at the School as our guest speaker at the Eighth Arnold Foundation Lecture on Wednesday, 2 February 2011. Sir Clive shared with us his formula for creating a winning team both on and off the pitch. Put simply, successful teams are made of great individuals. So, Sir Clive enlightened us with his "DNA of a True Champion" building from a talent as the starting base through to having the ability to think correctly under pressure and the will to succeed.

Lawyers Reception For the third year running, Freshfields hosted a fabulous reception on Thursday, 24 March 2011 in their boardroom for all Rugbeians and Rugby parents working in, or retired from, the Law. Seventy-one guests enjoyed a new format to include a Moot. Two past Arnold Foundation pupils, Bartek Zakrzewski (W 07-09) and Judith Welikala (G 07-09) spoke about their life transforming education at the School, whilst opposing each other in the debate, Should Rugby keep the Arnold Foundation to itself? They were ably supported in their arguments by Nick Tall (B 86-91) and Steph Maguire (D 90-92). Barry O'Brien, Partner at Freshfields, past parent and member of the Arnold Foundation Board, chaired the panel and kept the teams on their toes with some challenging, and humorous, jibes from the panel which included Keith Abel (B 77-82) and Anne Hardy (D 82-84). Both teams put up a credible and persuasive case, it was impossible to differentiate so a draw was declared. It was a lively evening but then we wouldn't expect anything less from the boardroom at Freshfields!

Arnold Foundation Donors Lunch

The Lecture was enjoyed by a broad audience of over 450 guests which included Rugbeians, pupils, staff, present and past parents and members of the general public.

On Thursday, 7 July 2011 the Head Master, Patrick Derham, hosted the Donors Lunch in the Lewis Gallery at the School. This annual event provides us with a wonderful occasion to thank our supporters; 70 guests attended including members of the Charles Shorto Society together with 13 Arnold Foundation pupils and Arnold Foundation tutors who were able to provide, first hand, up-todate information about their experiences at the School. Afterwards guests enjoyed the highlights of the School Arts Festival including, for many, a compelling performance of Shakespeare's The Tempest whilst others joined in the combat of A Question of Sport.

Rugbeians Society Golf Day in aid of the Arnold Foundation On Thursday, 26 May 2011 six teams of golfers including Rugbeians, friends and family gathered at Hendon Golf Club. Unfortunately heavy rain made conditions difficult however ‘The Floreat Forty Somethings’ soldiered on and completed 18 holes. It was a great day with £1,930 raised for the Arnold Foundation. We are very grateful for the support and look forward to the next Golf Day on 24 May 2012.

The most important thing about a Will is to make one. Important also is the inclusion of those who will benefit including your family, friends and charities; we very much hope all Rugbeians and supporters will remember the Arnold Foundation for Rugby School, the School’s own charity. All gifts will make a difference and an initial £250 legacy in your Will would be a wonderful start. A gift contributing to the education of another is something that lasts. What a wonderful and lasting memory we can leave by giving something in our Wills for the education of those who come after us.

Over the years you may decide to give more and it is easy to change the legacy amount, either by way of a simple Codicil or in a Letter of Wishes giving your executors guidance on dealing with your estate. You will find copies of a Codicil (for those who already have a Will) and Legacy Pledge Form on the Arnold Foundation website www.thearnoldfoundation.net or from the Development Office. If you would like to discuss your legacy please contact Kerry Wilson on [email protected] or by calling 01788 556139.
