NEW TEMPORARY CROSSING ARRANGEMENTS FOR FNPS As part of the North Fitzroy Community Hub construction and surrounding streetscape improvements, Buxton Constructions has commenced civil works to Alfred Crescent. These works will involve the removal of the existing school crossing. Over the Easter school holidays, a temporary crossing will be installed near the corner of Fergie St and Alfred Crescent. The temporary crossing will remain in place until the final street works are complete in November. Traffic control people and the existing school crossing staff will safely direct children and parents across Alfred Crescent during the drop off and pickup times. Please find attached a plan showing the temporary school crossing. Please be aware that there is a large amount of building activity in the area currently and leading up to the completion of the project and parents are reminded to take due care in the area at all times.

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and North Fitzroy Primary School is excited to be participating. The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to 16 years in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by the closing date of the challenge. Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books. If you would like your child to participate, please return the privacy and consent form, which will be sent home with your child. All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and can choose to have their name included on the online Honour Roll. For more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge and to view the booklists, visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc

Easing children’s anxiety By Michael Grose

Anxiety is a normal part of life and can be managed, but it takes time. It’s also contagious so it’s the job of parents to stay calm, think clearly and role model confidence when kids get anxious so that children can learn how to cope with anxiety. For those with no personal experience of anxiety it can be hard to understand how debilitating it can be. “Come on, get on with it,” seems so obvious. Of course, this response is nowhere near adequate. Most kids experience some anxious moments or have fearful thoughts and feelings from time to time about certain events. These thoughts and feelings prompt them to proceed with caution. But anxiety and fear can be paralysing. Some kids simply can’t stop their ‘bad thoughts and feelings’. They can’t silence the voice of fear that whispers to them continually. Calm is created through your words, voice and facial expression. When children become anxious, help them recognise what’s happening. Some kids get angry, some become upset and others withdraw. Work out the pattern for your child and help them recognise when they are anxious. Accept your child’s anxious feelings. Your child needs to trust that you are with them, and then they will be more willing to let you help them cope. It’s hard sometimes to differentiate between what may be a bad case of negative thinking and true anxiety. Challenge the validity of your child’s fears and anxiety, using logic and rational thinking. Don’t allow kids to wallow in self-pity. Move their thoughts towards the future rather than allow them to mope around. Encourage your child to overcome their anxiety through action. Anxiety is normal, and part of everyday life. However, it can be debilitating unless it’s managed. Anxiety management takes time for kids to learn, but it’s one of those valuable life skills that parents can teach their kids.

DEVELOPING RESILIENCE IN GIRLS (For Teachers, Parents and Students) Certificate for 2 PD hours issued April 19th We all want to see our girls reach their best outcomes and mature into healthy, strong resilient girls. Resilience involves the ability to 'bounce back' or recover when things go wrong or negative experiences impact us. By giving our girls key strategies to develop resilience, we prepare them for life. During this 2 hour presentation (including time for discussion and questions), Author, Educator and Media Commentator, Sharon Witt, will provide key skills and strategies our girls need in order to be resilient, strong and capable young women.

Key topics include: • • • • • • • •

Developing Emotional Intelligence Navigating difficult relationships Conflict management skills The personal values and attitudes we want to foster in our girls Developing positive relationships Strategies for coping in traumatic or difficult situations How to foster optimistic thinking and self-talk Coping with Academic Stress

Complete details HERE COPING WITH THE STRESS OF VCE (For Students, Parents and Teachers) Certificate for 2 PD hours issued April 20th, April 27th and May 11th VCE can see a period where stress can be spotlighted as a negative experience that has the potential to sabotage success outcomes. This session will explore the positive elements of stress in improving academic performance, and the less than positive experiences and risks associated with anxiety. Practical strategies to manage stress will be delivered within a person centred framework for both students and parents. The psychosocial principles of recovery, see the need for support and encouragement from parents, but importantly, student responsibility in activating the self-help strategies. VCE students (and parents) will be empowered with the knowledge that too often it is not the event that dictates the outcome of success, but rather our thoughts about that event. Once stress is acknowledged, there is much we can do to in building our core strength. What is this core stress strength? Come along and find out!

Please note that even though the official title of this informative presentation is "Coping with the Stress of VCE" the principles covered will readily have application from year 8 onwards.
