FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents and Carers, A big thankyou to the P&C Committee Welcome Back BBQ organisers (Gina Dunford, Susan Duyvestyn, Brad Wilkinson) and all who helped out on the evening – it was a great night with over 300 people attending last Friday evening. It was wonderful seeing so many children and some ‘big kids’ hitting the dance floor. Thank you also to our SRC and to Mrs McEvoy for organising the school’s ‘Clean Up Australia’ day today – students were all over the grounds with rubber gloves donned and plastic bags in hand. The school looked spotless! David King and the Cornerstone Presbyterian Community Church have kindly donated a new Epson Projector to the school, which will be installed in the school hall very soon. Thank you for this very generous donation! On a more serious note, as Principal of the school I will always put the safety of our children first and foremost…and so a gentle reminder to please be careful when using the ‘kiss and ride’ area out the front of the school, and to follow some simple rules to help ensure the safety of all our children:     

Cars should only ‘drop off’ or ‘pick up’ children in this zone, not park for a period of more than 3 minutes (if your child is not there after 3 minutes please drive around the block and try again). Don’t block others from picking up their children…please move forward carefully once the car in front leaves. Please never double-park as it puts children at risk. Please never attempt U-Turns after picking up your child. Please park safely around the school, even if it means walking further to the school gate – please don’t park in the ‘Kiss and Ride’ area, near the school bus stop or across the entrance to the school car park.

There have also been a number of children arriving on school premises before 9am and staying back well beyond 3.30pm after school finishes. As students are not supervised before 9am nor after 3.30pm we ask that you do not drop your children off early please and have someone ready to meet them promptly at 3.30pm. If this is difficult, the school has a wonderful not-for-profit and on-site Out Of School Hours Care facility that offers quality care from 7.00am to 9.00am and between 3.30pm to 6.00pm (Tel: 9876 2242; Email: [email protected]). Don’t forget School Photo Day to be held this Tuesday 3 March. I am looking forward to studying the photographic products of the day as I aim to learn 424 names by the end of Term 1! Nicholas Perkins Principal ___________________________________________________________________ FROM THE OFFICE A REMINDER TO PARENTS TO NOTIFY THE SCHOOL ABOUT YOUR CHILD’S HEALTH

We welcome information from parents about your child's health, even if you are not requesting specific support from our school. Our school asks for medical information when you enrol your child. It is also important that you let us know if your child’s health care needs change or if a new health condition develops.

Information about allergies, medical conditions such as asthma and diabetes and other health care related issues (including prior conditions such as medical procedures in the last 12 months) should be provided to the school by parents. Please provide this information in writing to the principal. This will greatly assist our school in planning to support your child’s health and wellbeing.

Please also remember to notify staff in the school office of any changes to your contact details or the details of other people nominated as emergency contacts.

We appreciate your assistance in this regard and assure you that any information you provide the school will be stored securely and will only be used or disclosed in order to support your son or daughter’s health needs or as otherwise required by law. Tuesdays and Thursdays will be the only days money is accepted each week. Thank you Mrs Jenny Evans School Administration Manager

EASTWOOD HEIGHTS PUBLIC SCHOOL COMMUNITY ON FACEBOOK A reminder also that a group of EHPS parents and carers have set up a Facebook page as a place where the school’s community can support each other to keep up with what is going on at school, as well as to informally discuss anything relating to being a parent or carer. Please note, this is not an official EHPS page – official information should be obtained from the school. The online social community can be accessed by searching Facebook for the group called Eastwood Heights Public School Community. ______________________________________________________________________________ JUNIOR CHOIR The E.H.P.S. The Wellbeing Corner This week’s entry shares some of our new procedures for supporting students to be Safe, Respectful Learners in the classroom and the playground. AIM: At EHPS I try my best to be a Safe, Respectful Learner in all that I do and towards others. Sometimes I may find it difficult to do this and need extra support from teachers and school executive. They will help me build on my positive behaviours so I can be a Safe, Respectful Learner on my own. This process of support is described below: 1. When I need extra support my teachers will first have a chat and remind me of the school values 2. If I need further assistance they will give me some thinking time about what has just happened and then have a chat and remind me of the school values. 3. If I am still finding it difficult to be a Safe, Respectful Learner I will be sent to and supported by the executive staff to reflect more deeply on the school values. This process is known as REFLECTION (formerly known as DETENTION). During REFLECTION time I will develop positive strategies to help me continue to improve my behaviour on my own. 4. If either: •

I have ongoing difficulty in being a Safe, Respectful Learner

I physically hurt another student

I damage school property

my actions had potential to cause significant harm to another person(s) or to school property

then I will be sent to executive staff and placed on a period of LONG REFLECTION where I will have supervised time out for two half-lunchtimes. I will also not be able to engage in other preferred activities, such as PSSA sport, for that week. This will give me more time to develop positive strategies to ensure I can be a Safe, Respectful Learner on my own. Kylie Bryant Wellbeing Co-ordinator 8

PSSA T-BALL, SOFTBALL AND CRICKET Last week’s results… T-BALL v BORONIA PARK

Girls lost 1 - 8. Some great fielding by Boronia Park made it difficult to score against them. Our girls played incredibly well and strived to strike the ball into the gaps in the outfield. I was proud of the girls’ efforts to apply their learnt knowledge from our mid-week training sessions. Annabelle’s powerful batting scored the girls their run for the day. Boys won 14 - 12 What a spectacular game! The boys were very enthusiastic and applied all they had learnt in our mid-week training sessions to come away with their first win of the season. Excellent communication and team work on the field saw them get many Boronia Park boys out on the full and at first base. Nathan was particularly alert as short stop and demonstrated excellent communication and tactful thinking. Liam also scored an impressive home run. Fantastic work boys! SOFTBALL v BORONIA PARK

Boys lost 3 - 12. Girls lost 0 - 10 CRICKET v NORTH RYDE

Juniors lost 61 - 63 A REALLY close game for the Juniors today, down to 3 runs. The opposing coach said that he was impressed by the sportsmanship and hard work from our team and there are lots of positives to be taken from this game. Man of the Match: Dom H for a fantastic catch in the field and a really good effort organising the team as captain. Seniors won 3/62 - 10/33

WOW – 10 wickets.! The Seniors bowled through the whole team for the first time in EHPS history. Good fielding and strong bowling made the difference today. Nathan T had so many catches and run-outs that he elicited "Wow your keeper is AWESOME!" from an opposing rep-player. Our boys batted solidly to 62 off 13 overs, sharing the spoils. Man of the Match: Will B, for an impressive 3 wickets across 2 maidens and an anchoring role as batsman. 3/0 are amazing figures, Will! For more info…

Check on results, draws, rules and much more at: www.pssa.net.au/Ryde/ ZONE SWIMMING CARNIVAL

Notes have been sent home with those students who have qualified to swim at the Ryde Zone PSSA carnival on 10 March. Please sign and return the note with the required payment promptly to your child’s class teacher. If your child is not going to compete in any event, please let Mr Cuneo know ASAP so that a replacement can be entered. PSSA NETBALL AND SOCCER

Over the coming weeks trials will be held in various recess and lunch breaks to choose our PSSA 9

netball and soccer teams for the winter competition which commences in week 1 of term 2. It is vitally important that your child listens carefully to announcements at morning assembly regarding these trials and registrations. When sheets are posted to register interest, the children must make sure they add their name to the list. When trial times are announced they must ensure they are in attendance. Trials are held over a number of days. If your child misses a trial due to illness they must ensure they attend subsequent trials. Teams will be finalised by week 9 this term. Notes will be sent home with those children who are successful. The PSSA competition is designed to provide sport at an advanced level for children who demonstrate above average skills in netball and soccer. Selection is based on merit. While your child may be disappointed this year if they don’t make a team, they should be encouraged to try again next year. Many children are selected in their second or even third year of trying to make a team. Our PSSA trials will also be used to choose a few senior soccer and netball players to attend the Zone trials on Friday 11 March. If your child is selected to attend the Zone trials for soccer or netball a note will be sent home prior to that date. ZONE CRICKET TRIALS

Nick J, Kyle I and Mackenzie M attended the Zone cricket trials last week at Gladesville school. The standard was extremely high and while none of the boys were selected, the experience was extremely beneficial, especially for Mackenzie who will undoubtedly be selected to attend again next year. PAUL KELLY CUP

The Paul Kelly Cup is on Thursday 5 March. If you have not returned the note and payment please do so promptly. The children need to be at school before 9.00am on the day. Mr Cuneo Sports Organiser

Our school will be celebrating Harmony Day and our school community’s multicultural diversity on Tuesday 31 March. On this day students are invited to wear orange clothing as this is the Harmony Day colour. Our special Harmony Day assembly will commence in the hall at 9.45am. The Assembly will reflect the message that ‘Everyone belongs’. Classes will also participate in some related activity during the day. In preparation for Harmony Day, students have been once again invited to: 1)

Make posters for this year’s competition. This year’s poster competition theme is: ‘Harmony Day – Everyday’. Posters will decorate our hall and the best entries will be sent into the ‘Moving Forward Together’ Competition in which we have participated for the last few years. The artwork may be in ‘any medium’ e.g. acrylic, oil, pencil, pastels, gouache, collage or computer graphics, and must be the original work of the students whose name/s appear on the entry form. The poster should be artwork on A3 paper (297mm x 420mm) and should be submitted by Tuesday 17 March. Entries should reflect one or more of the following principles: - Our society is made up of different people from different backgrounds - Everyone is unique - We share the goal of living together in harmony, peace and understanding - We value and respect the diversity of all Australians, including their diverse cultures, languages, religions and world views - We do not accept hatred, violence and unfair treatment of any person or group - We are proud to be Australian. For more details visit: www.movingforwardtogether.com.au

2)

Students have also been invited to write some poetry (or a song) on a Harmony Day theme. The best entry (also due by Tuesday 17 March) will be recited at the school assembly and be displayed in the school foyer. Students are reminded to write their full name, age and class on their work. For further information on Harmony Day, visit the Harmony Day Website at: www.harmony.gov.

E.H.O.O.S.H. NEWSLETTER Before and After School Care Offering quality care from 7.00am to 9.00am & 3.30pm to 6.00pm. OOSH AGM A big thank you to all the parents who were nominated for positions on the OOSH committee on Tuesday evening. We are grateful that despite busy schedules these parents are able to make it possible for our school to have a not for profit OOSH service. The committee meets once a term on for an hour, and all parents are welcome to attend. By coming to these meetings you can find out more about our school and the OOSH community. It’s a great way to support us in our aim to provide quality care. The following parents were elected to the executive committee: Kate Priddle (President), Swamy Natarajan (Vice President), Briana Casey (Secretary), Rebecca Lo (Treasurer), Dominique Holdsworth (Work Health Safety Officer) Regina Dunford (Public Officer) and Melissa Low (Staff Liaison Officer). Request for Treasurer: Rebecca has been our wonderful OOSH treasurer over the last few years, and as this is her last year as an EHPS parent we are looking for a treasurer in training who will be able to take over for next year. Please contact us if you are willing to support us in this way. HATS A reminder to parents that children must bring a hat to OOSH every day. We do provide OOSH hats to children who forget, but the supply is not meeting demand. Please remind your children that they need to bring a hat to OOSH if they want to play outside. THANK YOU! Last week Fanny and Deb organised delicious dumplings for our Chinese New Year celebrations at OOSH. The kids loved them and so did we! REQUEST FOR BED SHEETS The ever popular cubby making is taking over OOSH again. If anyone has any old sheets in good condition that they no longer need, we would love to make some great cubby’s out of them. FACE PAINTING/HAIR/NAILS At OOSH we occasionally program face painting, hair styling and nail painting. Please let us know if you would NOT like your child to do any of the above activities. CHILDREN’S VOICES This year we have begun a journal for OOSH called Children’s Voices. We love learning more about the children we care for and have been encouraging the kids to write about and draw their likes and dislikes. This helps us to program activities for the children that we know they will enjoy. Please feel free to have a look in this book as you drop off/pick up your child. CHESS CLUB – run by the Sydney Academy of Chess Learn to be a chess champion! Coaching for students at Eastwood Heights Public School is held on Tuesdays from 3:30pm – 4:30pm in the school library. Learning and playing chess helps children develop their logical thinking and problem solving skills, improves their concentration and focus, while also being a great source of enjoyment. Activities include group lessons on a demonstration chess board or interactive whiteboard, puzzle solving and fun practice games. Students earn merit awards by making checkmates, or by displaying skills and positive qualities, which all good chess players strive to develop. If your child is interested in taking part, you can collect an enrolment form from the school office, or email [email protected] for a copy. For all enquiries, please contact Sydney Academy of Chess on (02) 9745 1170.
