INTRODUCTION NOTES Wine Estate of the List Award VERGELEGEN STELLENBOSCH, SOUTH AFRICA When I first tasted Vergelegen wines I could not believe how amazingly good they were. They are simply stunning quality and the most exciting range of wines tasted in recent years. I had the privilege of attending a Vergelegen Master Class Tasting and luncheon in Leeds this year with the inspiring and legendary Andre van Rensburg, their wine maker, in ebullient mood with his dedicated team. The outstanding star of the tasting for me was the magnificent flagship GVB Red 2005 (see Bin No 88), a simply stunning, fabulous wine that will go on maturing for many years. We are offering a wide range, all tasted, Premium, Reserve, and Flagship. All the wines can be drunk and enjoyed now and will continue to mature and improve. Vergelegen, meaning “situated far away” was granted to the Governor of the Cape in 1700 and the property has had a long and fascinating history since that time. Vergelegen has twice won the coveted Chateau PichonLongueville-Comtesse-de-Lalande Trophy for best red blend. Readers of South Africa’s leading wine magazine have voted Vergelegen the country’s best producer for five successive years. This inspiring property has the reputation for being South Africa’s leading icon wine estate. They have won too many awards (over 200 since 1999) to be listed here. They include the First South African Biodiversity and Wine Initiative Champion (BWI). See Bin Numbers for tasting notes and details under Vergelegen Estate Wines Red and White Sections.

Tasting Notes:

Dense deep almost opaque colour. Rich oaky tannins, with deep blackcurrant and blackberry flavours and then all the classic left bank Bordeaux aromas of smoke, tobacco and cigar box. The 2007 was a ‘great’ vintage at Vergelegen. This is massive, full, with firm ripe tannins leading to a lingering mouth filling after taste. Cassis, chocolate, sweet spice with vanilla notes.

Grape Variety:

88% Cabernet Sauvignon with a little of the other three Bordeaux black grapes.

Closure:

Branded Cork and Aluminium foil.

Alcohol by Volume: 14%

Serving Suggestion:

Decant and then swirl around in a large glass, be prepared to be blown away by this stunning wine and bouquet.

Additional Notes:

Serve and drink this with eager anticipation. Once poured, sit back and admire the feedback. It is fabulous quality and for less than an ‘off’ vintage Bordeaux wine. Certified numbered bottles. This is an exceptional example of a truly great Wine Estate. We simply love this luxuriant aristocratic Cabernet led wine, easily compares with classic Bordeaux quality. Serve this for Christmas and smile.

VERGELEGEN RED GVB 2005 FLAGSHIP PRESTIGE RANGE * This is a best deal of the list award *

£30.00

A truly staggering wine, it compares with Premier Grand Cru Bordeaux vintage wines. Unbelievable dense black opaque colour, on the nose plum, chocolate, graphite and cassis, complemented by a complex minerality. On the palate the fruit tannin and acidity marry perfectly to offer balance and voluptuous complexity supported by flavours of red currant, spice and silky coffee. This scored 19/20 and was judged to be the finest bottle of wine tasted at the master class. My tasting notes are too theatrical and expressive to note here but enough to say that this is a magical superstar bottle of wine. This is the best bottle of red wine tasted this year – fact. 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc Branded Cork and Aluminium foil.

Alcohol by Volume: 14.5%

Serving Suggestion:

As with any Premier Grand Cru quality wine open a few hours before serving and decant. Pour a little into a large glass and swirl around, see the alcohol legs coat the inside. The bouquet will explode and invade the senses. I can taste it now! Serve at special occasions and to your nearest and dearest!

Additional Notes:

Matured in 100% new French oak barrels for 2 years and a further 3 years in bottle before release. This incredible wine will continue to mature for a further eight years in bottle. CHATEAU GUIOT ROSE 2011 COSTIERES DE NIMES MIS EN BOUTEILLE AU CHATEAU FRANCE

£9.45

Perfume, red berries, spice, summer berries and blossom aromas with an off-dry medium weight of fruit, clean and mineral acidity and a vibrant redcurrant finish. The gorgeous colour is obtained by keeping the skins in contact with the juice before fermentation. Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault Screw top cap.

Alcohol by Volume: 13.5%

Serving Suggestion:

A Rose wine that will bring sunshine to the cloudiest day. Serve on its own or partner with pasta and cheese.

Additional Notes:

Chateau Guiot is situated in the heart of the Costieres de Nimes appellation. Francois and Sylvia Cornut have owned the 75 acre property since 1977. Following a rigorous selection, the hand-harvested grapes undergo a traditional tank fermentation and maturation. After 6 months the wine is bottled to retain the ripeness and freshness of the dark berry fruit flavours.

HELPFUL NOTES BUYING CRU BOURGEOIS RED WINES The Crus Bourgeois French red wines are a natural hunting ground for those who can’t afford the huge high prices that the classic growths among the Medoc command. Well-chosen Crus Bourgeois wines from carefully selected vintages are physical wines with angles, depth, length and width, packed with the Bordeaux holy trinity of tannins, fruit and acidity. Some wines need time and patience to grow into themselves. THE FACTS: CRU BOURGEOIS a) b) c) d)

Covers 4,400 ha (27% of the Medoc’s vineyards) Can produce more than 32 million bottles in a vintage (around 38% of the Medoc’s production) as in 2010 The name Cru Bourgeois provides a reliable signpost for buyers. There are eight Medoc appellations: Acs Medoc, Haut-Medoc, St Estephe, Paullac, St Julien, Listrac-Medoc, Moulis-en-Medoc, Margaux

RECENT VINTAGES 2011 2010 years 2009 2008 2007 2006 2005 2004

- challenging year, choose with care - outstanding holy trinity year, exceptional ageing potential, the best will last for 10 -

excellent year, good aromatics some classic wines, wonderful Indian summer production early drinking, damp summer, lighter style wines classic vintage, some wines need a few more years a superlative vintage, some need time (2015) to open up some quality wines that offer excellent value, if you can find them!

WINE GLASSES The ideal glass should be clear so the colour of the wine can be seen, large enough so that a good serving of wine can be rotated and thus release the bouquet, thin enough to allow the glass to acclimatise to room temperature, and be a pleasure to hold.

CHAMPAGNE There are nearly 20,000 growers in Champagne owning 88% of the vineyards and if most are happy enough to sell their grapes to co-ops or the Houses, there are a growing number preferring to make the wines themselves. And many of them do so very skillfully. Our selection of hand-crafted Champagnes will combine finesse and flavour, often reflecting notions of terroir that are mostly lost in the big blends.
