Wineport Lodge Wine List We are delighted to present our Wine List and hope that you enjoy it as much as we do! This selection is the result of a lot of hard work (well…drinking) by all the team here in Wineport. The wines have been tasted by our fussy in-house tasting panel in order to bring the very best quality wines to you, that match the style of food we prepare, at great value prices. With the positive impact set for the Irish Tourism Sector and to tie-in with the recent initiatives shown by the Government, we are taking 5% off the prices on the list. It’s simple – 5% will be deducted off the price when you receive your bill!

We are constantly making improvements and additions to the list. Please don’t be shy to ask us any questions you may have about the wines, and do talk to any of us about choosing something to suit your personal taste. We would also love to hear about any comments or suggestions you have about the wines themselves, and the Wine List.

Cheers!

The origin of the name - Wineport The association between this peaceful spot on the inner lakes of Lough Ree in the centre of Ireland, and the great tradition of wine drinking goes all the way back to the year 542 A.D. Having studied in Clonard and Aran for some years, St Ciaran returned to his native midlands to found a monastery. He settled initially in a place called Iseal Chiaran, two miles east of Lough Ree. Translating the name of local village of Ballykeeran literally means “the home of Ciaran”. Later he founded another monastery on Hare Island, and eventually he headed south and founded his most famous monastery and seat of learning in Clonmacnoise. From the earliest times there was always a demand for wine in Ireland, and the trade was usually with France. From evidence contained in Irish mythology it is obvious that the nobility consumed their fair share of wine. Another strong demand for wine came from the early church as wine was essential for the celebration of mass. In what remains of the writings from St Ciaran’s time there is actually mention of wine being brought from Gaul (France) across the sea to Limerick City and up the Shannon destined for St Ciaran’s monastery. The townland of Wineport is named after the sheltered place at which the wine that had travelled from Gaul was carefully landed and brought ashore for consumption. Now, over fourteen hundred years later, wine continues to arrive at Wineport. Nowadays, demand is stronger than ever and wine is in plentiful supply and of the highest quality. The spirit of St Ciaran is still alive and well at Wineport!

"Come, come, good wine is a good familiar creature if it be well used; exclaim no more against it." Shakespeare, Othello
