WINE
LIST 2013
FIFTY SHADES OF WINE
Welcome to our 2013 Wine List The happenings of 2012 were very memorable and historic with London Olympics and Queen`s Diamond Jubilee, so we are all expecting this year to be a little less exciting, but maybe the economy will finally start to turn? Here`s hoping. Exciting times though for our wine range, we have made many improvements and extended the range of wines we are shipping directly from the growers them selves, giving us more exclusive wines and ever improving quality of our range. To accommodate this range extension we are now using the bonded warehouse service of InBond near to Stockton. This is the old Royal Navy depot which is a vast site, plenty of space to fill! The major developments include the award winning wines from Champagne grower Maurice Vesselle in Bouzy, these are award winning Champagnes and we are the exclusive UK importer. My very good friend Jean Boucabeille in the Cotes du Roussillon region of South West France has supplied us with his hand crafted Domaine Boucabeille wines, they are made on steep parched land but his vines produce concentrated flavoursome wines of the highest quality. I am also delighted to be distributing the very fine Burgundies from Maison Jaffelin based in the heart of the region in beautiful and historic Beaune. Throughout the list many great new additions, I hope that you enjoy browsing through the list. To help me move things forward I am delighted to welcome on board, my new colleague and graduate trainee Ben Barnard, Ben will be involved in all aspects of our business. He is a Yorkshire lad, and a graduate of Durham University and will I am sure add a new energy and character to our growing young business. We continue to strive to provide excellent, friendly and informed service and try to achieve the very highest standards. Please do contact us to discuss your requirements or visit our web site at www.firthandco.com or follow us on Twitter to get the up to date news on Firth & Co. With very best wishes for the coming months.

A range of wines selected to offer as wide a choice as possible. These white wines are mainly dry, some are more fruity than others and I feel all offer tremendous value.

White Burgundy
The ultimate in sparkling wines are produced here by the perfected “by monks” Methode Champenoise, this is the method of a secondary fermentation happening in the bottle to give the wine its fizz. The climate here is very cold in the Winters but with lots of sunshine and warmth in the Spring and Summer, prices are getting a little more realistic during this endless recession.
The home of the Chardonnay grape, we also have an Aligote, but this is where Chardonnay shows at its very best, often developed with the careful use of oak to develop the aromas and flavours as well as to add longevity to some of the great wines. Great Chardonnay and great White Burgundy should never be dominated by the oaky flavours that spoilt so many New World imitators.

Red Burgundy & Rhone
Loire Valley
A straight run down the autoroute from Dijon to Avignon via Lyon runs through these famous vineyards. Different grapes; Pinot Noir, Gamay, Grenache, Syrah but a similar feel for red wine production affected by the warmer weather as you head south. This is the main artery of French food and wine, a total delight.
A long river with an expanse of vineyards covering much of it, as well as providing every style of wine imaginable. The cooler climate here ensures crisp clean dry whites, but also great sweet wines, reds and even sparkling wines of great character. We offer just a small selection but all hand crafted excellent examples.

Bordeaux
This is one of the most interesting regions of France, a sort of New World, constantly changing and evolving. I am delighted to work with the fantastic Chateau Coupe Roses, these are wines made to the highest standards on some very challenging terrain and soils. Also new for this list is the iconic Mas de Daumas Gassac estate in the L`Aude Valley, truly great wines are made here, I am starting with the everyday stuff!
One of the finest regions of the World for red wines, but don`t forget the white wines. The prices for the great wines of the Medoc continue to go through the roof, but the more everyday wines actually offer great value. My friends at the superb Chateau Ballan Larquette prove that.

Many excellent wines are produced in Spain, these are wines worth discovering.
The third largest producer of wines, famed for Rioja, Sherry and Cava, but many other areas are producing really interesting wines. The Albarino grape grown on the Atlantic coast of Galicia is something very special and unique. High in the hills of Ribero del Duero the reds produced here have a totally different character than Rioja even though they use the same grape (just call it by a different name).

South Africa
A country with the potential to produce great wines.
This is a country with the potential to produce great wines. They seem to have most of the key ingredients, climate, soils, terroir, experience and cuisine. Maybe it just takes a bit of time now, a bit more age on the vines a bit more experience and a bit more export activity. It is certainly a country I like very much and am a great admirer of their wines, looking to further expand the range.

Chile & Argentinian Always a reliable source of well made, well packaged and crucially well priced wines. The new estates for this list are De Martino in Maipo in Chile and the Dominio del Plata from Mendoza in Argentina. Both are independent family owned estates doing great things with the traditional grape varietals.

Carmenere 2011 De Martino Estate, Maipo Valley, Chile A wine with lots of character, which sometimes is missing in Chile. The story of Carmenere being mistaken for Merlot is very interesting but it overshadows the fact that Carmenere is a genuinely interesting variety.

Both of these countries are now at a bit of a crossroads in having top get some excitement and value back into their wines. I am working hard as ever to find these wines, its work in progress!
