Background to Underfloor Heating

“In all developed countries, Building Radiant floor heating using water or Regulations demand that all houses electric systems uses considerably use less energy. less energy than radiator systems, heating objects first rather than air. Hot air within highly insulated houses is uncomfortable and Modern, comfortable and well promotes the need for expensive planned rooms have a uniformity of ventilation and heat loss through warmth and no restrictions imposed excessive air change. by the positioning of radiators.”

Which Heating System Should You Choose? What is Convected Heat?

BACKGROUND TO UNDERFLOOR HEATING

The temperature levels and air quality inside any dwelling or work environment are key factors for human comfort. They are often the least considered - possibly due to historically limited choices or available expertise. This has now changed.

6

Internal climate control is now even more critical as dwellings have become increasingly air tight and highly insulated. Additionally, to make the most of the low energy building design, the heating system(s) must be correctly calibrated and commissioned to facilitate optimal settings and efficient relationships with other systems, e.g. ventilation systems. To decide on which heating system to choose, it is critical to understand the differences between the two basic types of systems that are available i.e. low temperature underfloor heating (“UFH”) or convected heat produced, ironically, by radiators.

Warmup Underfloor Heating

Radiators mainly work on the principle of heat convection and not radiation. Air is heated to a high temperature in the range 65-75oC and needs to be moved from the radiator to the rest of the room. This is achieved using thermal currents of hot air moving to the ceiling, cooling and falling to create an air cycle. This system can work for draughty houses that have considerable heat loss through ventilation and propensity to air thermals. This certainly should not be the case with air tight and highly insulated houses.

Data from hundreds of air and floor sensors illustrates why standard radiator systems are inefficient when compared to floor heating. This also demonstrates how Warmup underfloor heating is not wasted at ceiling height, and works faster than radiators.

What is Radiant Heat?

Why Use Low Temperature Radiant Underfloor Heating?

The easiest way to understand radiant heat is to understand the feeling of warmth on your body from the sun on a freezing cold day, when the air temperature is clearly below freezing with snow and ice on the ground. Out of the sun however, the feeling of warmth disappears, as the main sensation would be of the freezing air temperature.

1. It is better suited to new low energy houses because:

Heating air can rapidly cause discomfort through stuffiness, over-heating of the head rather than the core of the body and lead to excessive mechanical or manual ventilation. What is required is precise, radiant controls. b) Warmup systems come with the most accurate thermostatic controls. These contain three temperature sensors (floor, air and external), with very accurate resolution to ensure floors or rooms do not overheat. c) Underfloor heating does not try to heat air, thus lower power is required (ASHRAE - 55-92 2003 report). d) Underfloor heating heats bodies first and does not circulate warm air to be wasted or lost at ceiling height as shown by the Warmup Research Centre.

3. The zoning of heat in dwellings using convected air, i.e. radiator systems, is virtually impossible. Air movement between zones is a regulatory requirement. Zoning with underfloor heating is possible and promotes enormous efficiency by removing the need for central heating, for example, in children’s bedrooms at night. 4. Underfloor heating is silent. 5. Underfloor heating is either low-maintenance (hydronic systems) or zero maintenance (electric systems). 6. Most Warmup systems come with a Lifetime Warranty. 7. Underfloor heating does not change humidity levels, unlike radiators. 8. Underfloor heating does not require any floor or wall space; offering complete design freedom for each zone. 9. Warm wood, tile and stone floors are more comfortable to walk on than cold ones.

Warmup Underfloor Heating

BACKGROUND TO UNDERFLOOR HEATING

Radiant heating warms a dwelling or building through radiant heat emitted from a warm wire element or water pipe from the floor. It warms dense objects like people and objects first from the floor upwards. The internal air temperature for a radiant heated building may be considerably lower than for a convected air heated building, while achieving the same level of body comfort. This view is supported by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers Radiant Heating Report (ASHRAE - 55-92 2003), which confirmed that test subjects exposed to radiant heat selected comfort temperature levels on average 5.6º C lower than any other form of heating.

a) Radiators and other convected air systems promote the requirement for excessive ventilation. New, low energy buildings like the Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4 (CSH 4) are considerably more air tight and insulated than pre 2006 homes, which due to the air movement inside them was difficult and/or expensive to heat. The energy requirement for CSH Level 4 dwellings has dropped from 55 kWh/ sqm2/year to just 24.83kWh.

2. Radiator and other convection systems requiring air movement also move dust and other particles around promoting allergic reactions.

“Warmup’s post occupancy monitoring house programme provides unique and valuable information for predicting cost savings and running costs.”

Warmup Research Centre, Bremen, Germany

In order to establish and preserve industry thought leadership, Warmup developed its EN442-2 Research Centre in Germany. This series of separate test environments together with the dedicated analysis centre is integral to the Warmup business. This is the main centre for invention, innovation and improvement and co-ordinates world-wide contribution from all Warmup offices. Results, experience and know-how is shared with our offices and business partners around the world. This can range from new wire types and formats, system control configurations through to materials testing for our partners products. This Research Centre is run jointly with the Product Development Division. Warmup also monitors a number of post occupancy houses throughout Europe.

w w w. w a r m u p - p r o j e c t s . c o. u k

Laars Krueger, Lead Research Engineer. Warmup Research Centre - Bremen, Germany

This can be compared with test facility results and in particular, what may have been predicted by the SAP calculations (Standard Assessment Procedure used by the Department of Energy and Climate Change), which are central to the perceived energy performance and efficiency of a dwelling. SAP, whilst being integral to the construction process of domestic dwellings, by necessity has to be a calculation that can be applied across a range of circumstances with different input variables and assumptions. The information and analysis from the Warmup Research Centre and post occupancy monitored housing programme is at your disposal to assist in the design phase for your planners. It can also assist in the marketing/selling phases with prospective buyers.

Warmup underfloor heating is showcased in the BRE Renewable House to deliver low CO2 emissions, including both embodied carbon and low energy usage. It is proving the perfect system for sustainable CSH Level 4 homes. These need very little space heating applied through precise, zoned and accurate controls. It is also demonstrating how healthier living is achieved by avoiding the creation of cold air currents at floor level and temperature build-up at ceiling level, associated with convection heating air currents. One of Warmup’s post occupancy monitored houses is situated in Berkshire. It is a 470 sqm CSH Level 4 house with a 4 person family. When it comes to running costs, our test studies found that during the Winter of 2010-2011 the average running costs (Oct-Feb) were 2.16 pence per sqm per day. Whereas during the Winter of 2011-2012 the average running costs were 1.47 pence per sqm per day. This saving was created by post commissary adjustments by Warmup and on going technical assistance for optimising performance and energy costs.

WARMUP RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

The Warmup post occupancy monitored housing programme grew out of the need to better predict the future energy running costs of houses using Warmup underfloor heating systems. This information can also be checked and compared with the information provided by the Warmup Research Centre in Germany to create a highly predictive model that allows all manner of key questions to be answered from: “How much will it cost to run the heating system of my new, yet to be built house?” to “How much will I save using Warmup radiant underfloor heating rather than radiators in this house?” Information is gathered every few minutes from many tiny sensors. These are strategically placed in each zone to compare floor, air, wire/water and outside temperatures and often other readings like humidity and radiant temperature. This allows a detailed view of the amount of energy actually needed to create ideal living conditions.

Insulation Levels for Floors and Walls

Warmup will confidently design floor heating which may encompass hydronic on the ground floor, and electric in certain zones like a bathroom.

The Warmup Research Centre has proved that the use of insulation is essential to get the best from the underfloor heating system. For example, our studies show that using Warmup insulation boards in conjunction with our underfloor heaters reduces the running cost of the heating by as much as 50%. Heatup time (period taken for the heated floor to reach the desired temperature) can be cut from as much as 2.5 hours to just 20 minutes.

Energy Usage and System Performance Optimisation Through our research and development and various post occupancy monitoring houses throughout Europe, including the BRE Renewable House, Warmup has built a performance database which provides full knowledge of how our systems operate and function. This includes energy usage and running costs, which are available at design stage. This facilitates pre installation running cost calculations and also post installation efficiency advice and calibration services. Warmup is the only company who offers this service.

Screed Warmup tests all types of screed (flowing/sand/cement/ anhydrite) against real applications using various screed depths, in adherence to British standards including BS EN1264 – Part 4. Where heavier floor loadings are required, Warmup works in collaboration with the construction engineer and helps advise on the screed thickness.

WARMUP AREAS OF EXPERTISE

Wattage Density The type of heating system best suited for an application often involves the complex analysis of space limitations, floor surfaces, available power supply, cost and appearance, so there could be several acceptable solutions for a single application – Warmup will advise you on the best solution.

Controls Warmup offers a comprehensive range of controls. One of our most innovative products is the patented, 3iE™ Energy-Monitor Thermostat. This product was launched in October 2010, after years of testing and analysis. It is Warmup’s view that well insulated houses are ill-served by powerful, expensive or slow acting heating systems that are not precisely controlled. Dwellings and buildings need systems that can be controlled accurately in as many zones as possible. In order to successfully bring the 3iE Energy-Monitor Thermostat to market, a number of tests were carried out to ensure our solution is the best on the market.

The 3iE™ Energy-Monitor Thermostat: Interactive, Innovative, Intelligent and Energy Efficient Innovative - First thermostat with a 2.4” full colour screen. Easy to use, no manuals needed. Interactive - Clear graphic interface may be changed for a variety of screen types, colours and brightness. Intelligent - Proportional adaptive function precisely activates the system when needed. WARMUP SYSTEMS SUMMARY

Electric Underfloor Heating

16

“Products are designed to be better and have more accreditation approvals than any other manufacturer.”

Warmup electric underfloor heating, the world’s best-selling electric underfloor heating brand™, provides warmth throughout the whole room, giving a whole new meaning to heating and comfort. Warmup’s electric underfloor systems use BEAB-approved ultra-thin heating elements. The heating wire with fluoropolymer coatings is less than 2mm thick and will not raise floor levels. This also makes it much easier to install particularly in upper floor rooms (e.g., bathrooms). When it comes to installation, Warmup electric underfloor heating is easy to install and a qualified electrician is required to fit the thermostat, RCD and final connection to the power supply. To provide additional security and peace of mind, Warmup was the first manufacturer to guarantee our products for life and goes one step further through our SafetyNet™ Installation Guarantee, this means if the wire is accidentally damaged during installation, Warmup will replace it free of charge – this is unique to Warmup.

w w w. w a r m u p - p r o j e c t s . c o. u k

Warmup underfloor heating offers heat-up time in minutes rather than hours, avoiding overheating and wasting energy. For example, a typical bathroom costs just 10p per day to run.

Hydronic Underfloor Heating The Warmup hydronic heating system operates by circulating a controlled flow of warm water circulated through pipes including PEX-a (cross linked polyethylene) and multi-layer composite AL-PERT pipes. These are installed in a conductive floor structure (screed), or in conductive elements (diffusion plates), which are embedded into the sub floor to transfer the heat to the floor surface. The floor becomes a large low temperature heat emitter warming the floor surface and transferring heat from there to the room or space. The major method of heat transfer from the heated floor surface is by radiation, it amounts to 50%-60% of the output; the remainder is made up by convection and conduction. Further, having slightly warmer feet than the head leads to better comfort conditions. Unlike radiators, hydronic underfloor heating systems do not need to run at a high temperature. Typically, the temperature of the water in an underfloor heating system pipe is 35-55°C, warming the floor to a temperature of 29°C as opposed to the c.80°C flow and surface temperature of a radiator system. Room temperature is controlled by a thermostat. In the case of multi-zone installations, i.e. multiple rooms in the building or home using hydronic underfloor heating; a central wiring system is used where the thermostats are controlled depending on the specific heating output required per zone.

Hybrid Underfloor Heating Warmup gives you the ultimate choice when it comes to underfloor heating – the option to choose electric, hydronic or a hybrid solution. This means you can have electric upstairs in say a bathroom(s) or bedroom(s) and hydronic downstairs - this will often present itself as the ideal solution. You can rely on Warmup as an expert in both areas to seamlessly integrate the two heating solutions.

Benefits of the Warmup Underfloor Heating Systems: • • • • •

Full knowledge of how a system will operate and function along with the energy usage and running costs is available at design stage – only Warmup can provide this information

Temperature control in each zone – comprehensive range of thermostats allow end users to choose the temperature levels they require, with heat on and off to match their lifestyle or business requirements

• • • •

Bespoke solutions – from a single room, to whole house, or heating for large commercial buildings, Warmup can provide a tailored solution to match individual needs and budget Comfort – warmth and an extremely high level of comfortable temperature is consistently achieved Energy efficiency - underfloor heating gives the user control. Provides rapid heat-up time, high-efficiency heating. It requires significantly less energy as you are not heating the ceiling area and it enables the temperature of each room to be accurately controlled as needed, allowing end users to heat the rooms they want – when they want, with no energy wasted

Cost savings – because underfloor heating uses a lower temperature than standard radiators, heating costs are reduced and savings can be achieved by c.10% on heating bills Design freedom – underfloor heating is a designer’s dream with no bulky radiators to take up valuable wall and floor space Health benefits – underfloor heating reduces humidity preventing dust mites from surviving and the radiant heat it gives out reduces dust circulation – these are important features for those who suffer from allergies and asthma Safety – delivers a family-friendly and safe environment. No low level hot surfaces or hard metal edges that come with a radiator system, creating a potentially unsafe and dangerous environment for small children, the elderly or those vulnerable and at risk Can be linked to any heat source, giving total flexibility - allowing for best energy savings, now and in the future Little or no maintenance - there is no maintenance required for electrical systems. For hydronic systems, all electrical components are designed for multiple use and longevity; serviceable parts are easily replaced should the need arise

Floor Finishes Suitable For Warmup Hydronic/Electric Underfloor Heating Warmup underfloor heating is the optimum choice for heating a dwelling or building. It is laid discretely either directly beneath the floor coverings or in the inscreed and does not take up valuable room space. It is suitable for most floor finishes including carpet, ceramic, engineered and solid wood, laminate, stone and vinyl. Carpet - The Carpet Foundation carried out some research in conjunction with the Underfloor Heating Manufacturers Association (UHMA) and this proved conclusively that most carpet types can be used over underfloor heating systems without impairing the performance of the system. The research showed that a carpet/underlay combination having a thermal resistance of less than 2.5 togs allows the underfloor heating system to operate efficiently.

Ceramic - It is very pleasing to touch, easy to clean, long lasting and 100 % recyclable.

Stone – Natural stone is beautiful, hard wearing, very practical and will add a stunning feature to any home.

Suitable Product(s) - Electric: Warmup Heating Mats, Loose Wire and Inscreed Cable. Hydronic: There are a number of Hydronic systems suitable, please contact Warmup for full details.

Suitable Product(s) - Electric: Warmup Mat, Loose Wire and Inscreed Systems. There are a number of Hydronic systems suitable, please contact Warmup for full details.

Engineered, Solid Wood - There is no doubt wooden floors are very popular. They are beautiful, will last for decades and have excellent acoustic properties.

Vinyl - Vinyl flooring is easy to clean and combines top-quality materials and styles to complement any home setting. Vinyl floors can be sensitive to heat over time and the correct choice of heater is important. Warmup will advise you on the best system.

It is essential that Warmup systems for wood are correctly specified. WHAT WE DO

Warmup Projects Division offers extensive experience when it comes to installing underfloor heating as the primary sole source and secondary heating in key zones, e.g. bathrooms. From design through the installation stages, we work with Architects, M&E Designers, Developers, Contractors and Self-Builders providing sustainable, renewable energy heating solutions to meet:

20

BREEAM coding and SAP Building Regulations assessment calculation models

• • •

Building Regulations, Part L requirements Thermal modelling data Sustainability targets

Modular Buildings Warmup has an excellent track record in delivering projects to the agreed specification, on time and to budget. Our aim is to ensure the project runs smoothly. As part of the project, customers are assigned a dedicated In-house Project Manager with hands-on expertise in:

• • • • • • • •

Design Specification Layout planning Heat loss calculations and thermal modelling Management of risk Project planning Budget allocation and cost control On-site inspection through to system commissioning

Warmup also offers dedicated service engineers should a floor become damaged during construction and under the Latent Defects period.

The choice of heating system is crucial for modular buildings in comparison to solid, as they have a low heat capacity. One of the dual benefits with modular construction and Warmup is that our heating systems can be installed as part of the factory manufacturing process, which enables cost effective and fast track construction. Underfloor heating is recognised as the most efficient method due to its fast reaction, providing heat that is odourless and noise free. Warmup underfloor heating is suitable as a permanent installation in concrete or thin-bed systems in the mass balance, and as part of a floating installation. Our high heat conductors are pressed into the insulating material with no need to raise ground levels as the required depth is less than 10mm. This does not add adversely to the structural height of the floor construction.

Refurbishments and Renovations At Warmup we recognise that installing environmental heating solutions in a home is only half of the process: education and customer support goes hand in hand with energy efficiency improvements. Warmup offers vast experience of working with home owners, landlords and tenants before, during and after refurbishment projects to help guide and support them to adapt and manage their new low energy usage lifestyles. This ensures that once our heating systems and thermostat controls are in place to maximise the benefits, they will allow end users to operate a zoned temperature throughout the home. This means that the heating patterns can be customised to mirror the way in which rooms are used, never over-heating or wasting energy. The Warmup Projects team will help you plan your project to identify, choose, install and maintain the most cost effective heating system, ensuring the minimum disruption is caused to home owners or tenants. In today’s current economic climate, the refurbishment of buildings and dwellings offers the opportunity to introduce sustainable energy sources for the heating of these properties. Warmup’s heating systems are highly suitable to provide cost effective, energy efficient solutions to heat a diverse range of projects including:

Warmup supplied its heating system for this loft conversion

“Warmup recognises that we have a clear obligation towards our people, customers and the community at large to ensure that we operate in a manner which minimises the impact of our business operations on the environment to achieve higher and more consistent product quality.”

Warmup is Committed to Limiting our Impact On the Environment. Warmup is committed to operating in an environmentally sustainable manner and is working towards ISO 14001 environmental management standards conformity to manage the environmental issues of the company. Warmup already has clear goals, objectives, internal procedures and policies to help control and manage our most significant aspects, e.g., emissions, waste-handling, utilisation of natural resources and energy efficiencies with compliance to environmental regulations. As a result management and supervisory staff have responsibilities to ensure that environmental issues are given adequate consideration in product development and in the planning and day-to-day supervision of all work. All employees are expected to co-operate and assist in the implementation of this goal, whilst ensuring that their own works, so far as reasonably practicable, are carried out without risk to themselves, others and the environment. This includes co-operating with management on any environmental related matter. Warmup takes all practical steps to ensure that potential hazards and risks to the environment are identified and that suitable and effective preventive and control measures are implemented. All employees are provided with the necessary resources, equipment, information, instruction and training to fulfil the requirements of this policy. The operation of this policy and the associated procedures is monitored and reviewed on a regular basis.

Energy Sources

The Warmup view is that we need to reconsider our approach to how we view energy – where we get it from and where we want to use it. It’s not “energy” we need but, for example, a warm dwelling. How do we achieve that efficiently? The first thing we do for a new CSH Level 4 dwelling is to make sure it is well insulated. If it is an older property or building we insulate it, so the energy already present is not wasted. During the course of twelve months, we have an oversupply of heat in the Summer and a shortage in the Winter. So we need a way of redistributing the energy that is already available. When it comes to seasonal thermal storage systems, Germany is leading the way and has extensive experience with Passivhaus, zeroenergy homes.

We also know that c. 25% of our traditional energy consumption is currently related to heating and cooling buildings. From Warmup’s perspective, it is clear we must completely reconsider our energy supply and usage; the results will be a radical new way of thinking and approach as to how we use our energy, only then will we be truly energy efficient. With this in mind, Warmup has a leading role to play in providing energy efficient heating and cooling systems that can be powered by electricity, boiler or energy source. For each system, we will work with the specifier and contractor to consider the most sustainable energy source, to reduce usage, costs and the impact on the environment.

Screed and Concrete Floors Warmup Clypso System System Description The Warmup Clypso System uses plastic clips to secure the underfloor heating pipe to laminated insulation panels. The panels are constructed from either PIR (polyisocyanurate) or expanded polystyrene insulation with a fabric reinforced foil laminated to their surface. The foil on each panel comes with two flaps, for taping to the adjoining panel, thereby increasing water resistance and separating the insulation layer from the wet screed. The laminated foil is printed with a grid pattern to make consistent pipe-spacing easier for the installer, especially when required to work around obstacles or a spiral installation pattern.

Construction 1 layer:

PEX-a- ADMER/ EVOH

The oxygen barrier is required to prevent ingress of oxygen which will fuel corrosion within the system. The Warmup PEX-a pipe is able to withstand higher pressures, is more kink resistant and considerably more flexible than competing Pex-pipes. This means an easier installation for the installer. The oxygen diffusion barrier encases PEX-a completely, preventing the entry of oxygen into the heating system via the pipe work. The tough outer layer is designed to withstand the rigours of surrounding workloads, ensuring that the oxygen barrier remains intact. This significantly reduces the risk of corrosion within the entire system.

Warmup PE-RT/Al/PE-RT Pipe

General

The Warmup PE-RT/AL/PE-RT pipe is a 5 layer composite pipe, incorporating layers of PE-RT and adhesives, encasing an aluminium core. The aluminium core acts as the oxygen barrier, preventing corrosion within the system from oxygen that would otherwise enter via the pipework. The aluminium core also allows the pipe to be positioned and shaped by hand, to maintain this shape. This means that the pipe requires less overall securing to the subfloor or insulation and is less prone to sagging where it is unsecured. TM

Owners, developers and designers often promote retail space within an outdoor setting in order to maximise external trading opportunities. This is because people, cafes, bars, hotels, love the use of an outdoor area. This is especially true when you look around shopping centres with well-designed outdoor areas and see that they are always full with many doubling the turnover of those who do not. Tenants understand this and will pay a premium for good quality outdoor space. As individuals, we all want the pleasure of being able to sit outside, whether to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the garden, to dine or entertain friends and family.
