Rudgwick Primary School News Friday 14th October 2016

Week 6

Dear Families Rudgwick has gone Gold! This week I was delighted to hear that we have been awarded the Gold School Games mark. This is a significant achievement that recognises the quality of sports provision at Rudgwick Primary School. The Assessor was impressed with the opportunities that our pupils have to compete at all different levels of sport, our links with The Weald and the way in which our pupils are encouraged to take part in sports leadership. A huge THANK YOU to Mrs Farnell and Mrs Thompson for the hard work that they put into preparing for the assessment and ensuring that we have superb sporting opportunities at school. Also special thanks to Mrs Burse and Mrs Cash in the front office for all the work that goes into organising sporting fixtures. It was good to see so many people at parent’s evenings, if you have not yet had the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress I would encourage you to book a meeting with their class teacher via the school office. This week’s coffee morning for new parents allowed us to hear feedback about the settling in process. Unfortunately we have to cancel next week’s maths coffee morning, but have rescheduled this for Monday 7th November. Year two also had a great time meeting Mr Tilley’s sheep as part of their animal project…….

We wish our year 5’s a fantastic residential as they are off to Sayers Croft next week.

Next Friday 21st October is INSET day school will be closed to pupils. Star Awards

We have been learning Africa (Year R)

In Africa class we have been drawing our own pictures of Mr Wiggle or Mr Waggle. We have had to use our own imaginations as there are no pictures of these characters. During woodland learning this week we investigated how we could make different sounds. We used sticks and tapped them on different surfaces in the environment. In phonics we have learnt new sounds and are continuing to put them together to read and write words. Asia In Maths this week we have been concentrating on addition and (Year 1) understanding number sentences. In ICT we have been opening word documents, adding borders and photographs from our Arundel school trip. In Literacy, we started to look at traditional tales, in preparation for next week when we will be using drama to support our speaking and listening activities. Europe This week we have finished off our fact books on animals to show to (Year2) Miss Bowers - we are hoping to persuade her to let us have a class pet! In PE we have been brushing up on our hockey skills and starting to play 2 on 2 games, even braving some tackling. In RE we have been researching patron saints and thinking about why they are important to Christians. On Friday we completed a big write about the escaped Gorilla in London Zoo, imagining what the Gorilla got up to! Australasia This week we have been using subheadings to create non-fiction texts (Year 3) and been focusing on our ability to edit and improve our own work by using our Purple Polishing Pens. We have been working together in P.E to control our bodies by balancing for 3 seconds at a time, controlling a ball in hockey and knowing what to do when we feel sad PSHE. We have been finding the perimeter of simple rectangles to find the best cave for some Stone Age characters in Maths by counting around the shape or using a formula. The children have all worked very hard. Antarctica We have been continuing our work on E-safety in ICT and in R.E we (Year 4) have been learning about Islam. We also painted our Greek clay pots, ready to add the finishing touches next week. In Maths, our learning focus has been the properties of 2D shapes. Our Greek dance about the Minotaur is looking fantastic! In PSHE, we acted out different scenarios in small groups and talked about how to be a good friend to someone. North This week we have been putting the finishing touches to our Space America Books ready to share with year 1 in the near future. These books are (Year 5) really showing off the children’s ability to present facts in a clear and eye-catching way – well done year 5! We have also spent time thinking about our upcoming residential trip to Sayers Croft next Wednesday and working on our personal and social skills so that we are supportive to all members of our class when we face challenges on the trip. We are very excited! South This week we have continued with our understanding of light and sound America and used this to make a working Anderson shelter. We read the (Year 6) fabulous, but slightly gory, book 'Sweet Clarinet' and using the features the author used have begun to write and edit a piece of description. In maths with have been able to use the information gathered in our science investigation in the line and scatter graphs to show our

understanding of communicating science/maths information effectively.

Helpers needed We need helpers for the Halloween Disco on 20th October after school. We will be putting a sign-up sheet in the playground next week. We would really appreciate your help at this school fundraiser. Rugbytots The Rugbytots session on Thursday 20th October will now run at 2-3pm instead of the normal time of 3.30-4.30pm. This is a one off to enable our PTA to run a fundraising disco after school. If any parents are not able to collect their child at the earlier time the PTA will take care of them in the disco. Lollipop Lady The Lollipop Lady, Diane Whitehorne will be retiring at Christmas. We have not yet been advised if she will be replaced. Diane will be missed and we wish her every happiness.

Welcome to Rudgwick Primary School's lottery! A ticket costs £1 per week and all funds raised go directly to our school. Each ticket will also enter you in TWO draws: 1. A jackpot prize draw for £25,000.00. 2. A local draw with a guaranteed prize for one of the supporters of our school. The size of the prize will depend on the number of tickets bought for the school that week. The lottery is a fun and effective way to raise money to improve our school. But we need your help to make the lottery the best it can be, so please support the lottery today - and who knows maybe you'll be the next £25,000 winner! Your School Lottery website: http://www.yourschoollottery.co.uk/lottery/school/rudgwick-primary-school A note from the PTA... Just a quick reminder that the deadline to book tickets for the Halloween Disco is Monday 17th October. We are still in need of helpers for the KS2 disco; please let Louise O'Brien know if you can help. An email was sent out this week about the School Lottery- if you'd like to sign up to play this is another great way to support the school. If anyone has any further feedback on PTA events please respond using the form emailed recently. Many thanks for your continued support.
