President’s Message Welcome to the most prestigious and exciting event in the world of German Shorthaired Pointers, the 2013 NGSPA Nationals. Congratulations to each of you who own and/or handle dogs in this event. It is an accomplishment just to have qualified to enter your dog here. The competition is of the highest caliber. The best dogs in the country come together once a year to compete in one place, Booneville, Arkansas. The grounds are demanding, the birds can be tough to find and handle, and the judges are selected from the best in the country. In a very real sense we are the "keepers of the breed". In this Premier Trial we honor the work of generations of breeders who have set out to improve our breed as a bird dog and companion, in temperament and trainability, and in conformation and endurance. We have all witnessed other breeds who have lost their way, and their dogs, while appealing to the eye, have lost their purpose and functionality. The Trustees of the NGSPA are committed to improving this National Championship so that it will always be the ultimate test to ensure that the German Shorthaired Pointer of tomorrow is an even better dog than the one we are breeding today! Thank you for your love of our sport and of our chosen breed, and for your support of the 2013 Nationals. We owe a debt of gratitude to our sponsors who have made this event possible. 2012 BIRD DOG HALL OF FAME MIKE ALDRICH

Born and raised in Michigan, Mike’s introduction to hunting over pointing dogs took place in the late 1950’s. After years of hunting over other peoples’ dogs he finally purchased his first Shorthair in 1966. He joined the local GSP club and over the next 30 years held many positions with that club. By 1970 Mike developed an interest in field trialing and purchased a dog for that specific purpose. Since then it has been one steady outlay of cash and continued participation in all phases of the sport. He was FT secretary for the 1977 and 1987 German Shorthaired Pointer Club of America (AKC) National Amateur Championship and has also been National FT Chairman or Co-Chairman on eight occasions. In 1982 Mike volunteered to produce the national catalog for the National German Shorthaired Pointer Association (AF) and soon was on the Board. He continued to produce that catalog for the next 14 years. Mike has served seven years as organization Secretary, four years as Treasurer, and five years as President. In addition to that he has served 44 5149229v9

as National FT Chairman or Secretary on several occasions. He has been a Board member for all but a couple of those 30 years. For the last five years Mike has been a member of the Birddog Foundation Board of Directors representing the interests of the German Shorthaired Pointer world. For his service to the NGSPA Mike received the prestigious McGinnis Award presented to those who have given unselfishly of themselves and their resources to nurture and perpetuate the goals of the organization. In 2000 Mike went to work for the American Kennel Club as a Field Rep which he retired from in May 2008. During his time with AKC his job was to attend events, develop and present seminars, and modernize the pointing dog Rules and Procedures manual which included a system for educating and approving individuals to judge licensed pointing breed field trials. Mike has owned many very competitive Shorthairs two of which have won the NGSPA National Amateur Championship, those two being Pipeline’s Lucky Lady in 1986 and Chicoree’s Cherokee Jake in 1993. He will admit training dogs is not his greatest pleasure. Those two dogs were trained by John Steger but trialed and hunted extensively by Mike. He has judged extensively for both American Field and AKC trials which includes over 40 American Field Championships for all breeds. Mike has always made himself available to do whatever is needed, trying to be an example for others. His latest endeavor is to bring the NGSPA into the 21st century by developing a user friendly website which includes all the forms and information necessary for clubs and individuals. They share a common interest or bond in life that includes great dogs, a healthy lifestyle, and most of all great friendships.

2012 BIRD DOG HALL OF FAME EDWARD B. CAUDLE 1926 – 2003 Ed Caudle was born on August 16, 1926, in Atkins, Arkansas, but his family moved first to Reeves, Missouri, in 1936, and then relocated to Brownwood, Missouri, in 1939, where his family farmed to survive the depression. He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1944 and not only fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II, but was also the heavy weight boxing champion of the Third Marine Division. After his discharge in February 1946, he returned to Missouri, married his wife Geneva Bland, and they subsequently moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he worked initially for Timpken Corporation. Ed not only loved dogs but had enjoyed hunting both squirrels and quails growing up. In Detroit he became friends with Al and Levi Sumers, Shorthair enthusiasts, and also with Russell “Lefty” Dixon, a professional Shorthair handler. Ed’s first dog, Ladie II, was bred to Dixon’s Skiddoo and produced Caudle’s Leader which accumulated some 90 placements along with going runner-up in the 1957 National German Shorthaired Pointer Association, Inc. (NGSPA) National Championship. Ed started training professionally in 1954, handling several dogs of note for Al Dax of Chicago, Illinois, and Dr. Clark Lemley of Detroit, Michigan, both stalwarts of the German Shorthaired Pointer breed. He moved his kennel operation to Canton, Michigan, in 1965 and utilized Ord, Nebraska, as the base for his summer training trips. Ed campaigned dogs professionally until 1975 when he retired, turning his string over to Tommy Schwertfeger. 46 5149229v9

Ed was one of the individuals who had a great impact on the NGSPA, an American Field affiliated organization. He not only competed in the NGSPA Championships as a professional handler but associated and worked with those individuals who help birth and then build the NGSPA into a national bird dog organization. He was a strong advocate of the one-hour Shorthair and devoted both time and effort working for this organization and serving as its president from 1970 to 1972 and again from 1975 to 1978. He served as a judge in numerous Shorthair field trials and was always known for his comment that “you call a hog a hog and a dog a dog.” The handlers who competed under him knew that his decisions would be honest, fair and that he was determined to place the best dog in the stake. After his retirement as a professional handler, Ed continued to campaign his own dogs. He enjoyed outstanding success with “Ib’s Heir Biff,” winning the NGSPA Pheasant All Age Championship and the NGSPA Quail All Age Championship in 1976 prior to winning the NGSPA National Championship with him in 1977. Ed continued to work dogs, did some training in Montana during the summers, and maintained an interest in bird dogs throughout his life.

Bossman was the product of the mating of FC Tip Top Timmy to NSDC (3x) Heidi Vom Uferwald, her by top producer FC Windy Hill Prince James. Donald Thomack masterminded this mating and whelped the litter at his Sun Prairie, Wisconsin facility. I was working as an apprentice with Don at the time and wanted to purchase one of the 3 females. However, as fate would have it, the females were spoken for and I ended up with the lone male. As the raising progressed it soon became obvious Boss had a certain presence about him – a self-confidence and drive not inherited by many. The rest is history and in retrospect I can only lament that I was so young and inexperienced that many of Boss’s talents were never publicly displayed to their fullest. 2012 BIRD DOG HALL OF FAME KJ’S HIGHTAILING SADDLE 4/11/1988 – 7/5/2002

KJ’s Hightailing Saddle, FDSB # 1306629 was whelped on April 11, 1988, out of a mating of Direct’s Fine Line and Joyce’s Hightailing Krystle. Saddle was bred and owned by Kevin and Maureen Joyce of East Northport, New York. Saddle was handled by Daniel Burjan in open competition and by Kevin in amateur competition. It was evident early on that Saddle was something special. At three months of age Saddle was way ahead of his littermates in desire, confidence, boldness, and extreme range. Daniel Burjan worked Saddle at his farm in New Jersey and in Thomasville, Georgia, during the winter months preparing for the upcoming field trial season. Saddle placed third in the National German Shorthaired Pointer Association (NGSPA) National Futurity in the Spring of 1990 and followed this with first place wins in the NGSPA Region 5 Derby Classic and the National German Pointing Dog Association Derby Classic. 50 5149229v9

Saddle won his first American Field one-hour Championship at the Region III in Florida at just under 3 years of age. He continued on with his winning ways annexing five more Championship titles including the 1992 NGSPA Pheasant All-Age Championship and annexing the runner-up spot in seven one-hour championships. KJ Hightailing Saddle had an impressive production record. He was the sire of 49 American Kennel Club Field Champions. The records of the Field Dog Stud Book reflect that he sired 67 dogs who amassed a total of 619 wins. Included in this number are 19 Shorthairs who won one-hour championships many of whom had multiple wins. Saddle had and is still having a significant impact on the German Shorthaired Pointer breed. One of his greatest contributions has been the number of dogs which he sired and that amateurs have been able to train on their own and then handle to field trial wins and placements.

CONTESTANT RESPONSIBILITIES Remember, we are guests on the trial grounds treat them like they are your own. Clean up after your dogs. Fill in holes dug by your dogs. Pick up litter on and off course. No water allowed in the barn. Clean out horse stalls daily (paid help will be available if you want it). There will be a list on the hay wagon for you to sign when you get hay – make sure you don’t forget to use it and settle your bill before leaving. Make sure you settle your food bill before leaving. If the horse troughs are getting empty, fill them up. Don’t wait for someone else to do it. Cleanup after yourself. Above all else, treat your fellow contestants like you want to be treated and have a great time!

Standards for the NGSPA National Futurity The National Futurity, sponsored by the NGSPA, will be held for the purpose of promoting the development of National Caliber Class All-Age or Shooting Dogs and to give breeders, exhibitors, and spectators an opportunity to compare and evaluate the results of their breeding to the results obtained by other breeders. The type of dog to be honored in this stake is one that shows the potential to go on and win the important stakes in the country including: the National Championship, the National Amateur Championship, the National Shooting Dog Championship, Species Championships (i.e., the National Pheasant Championship, the National Quail Championship, and the National Chukar Championship), or any of the sanctioned Regional Championships of one hour duration. The “single” futurity concept creates an environment of all-age and shooting dog potential candidates competing over the same course together. This places an extra burden on the judges. They must recognize the potential that the dog is displaying and judge it accordingly. The best dog, be it an all age or shooting dog, should emerge based on its potential and performance. In the event that an all-age and a shooting dog are being considered for the winner and the dogs cannot be separated by performance, the all-age dog will break the tie. Because of the nomination cycles for breeders, the age range of the dogs competing will be from sixteen (16) months of age to twenty-eight (28) months of age. The judging criteria of “Minimum Derby Requirements” should accommodate all the entrants with respect to the variance of ages but should never be lowered so as to lose sight of the above-mentioned standard. The winning dog must: 1. Demonstrate intense desire to find game. 2. Show determination, which is demonstrated by its application under adverse conditions, such as unusually heavy cover, unpleasant weather, bad footing, and terrain. 3. Voluntarily run an aggressive forward course performing to its potential. 4. Show a consistent pattern, intelligently hunting and adjusting to the terrain and cover. 5. Hunt independently of its bracemate and not show a tendency to seek easy footing. 6. Demonstrate Class. The term “Class” in this instance has reference to the manner of the going of the dog as to speed, loftiness, gait, and general appearance, such as you would expect to find in a superlative bird dog. 7. Handle game with intelligence, although not necessarily with complete manners. If game is encountered, he should point staunchly and with style, but not necessarily steady to wing and shot.

General Running Rules for the Futurity Dogs may be handled from foot or horseback. Horses may be used for conveyance but not as an active aid to handling. Mounted handlers may approach their dogs on point at a reasonable pace. If a dog continually disturbs his bracemate, it should be the duty of the judge to order the offending dog to be taken up. The judges have the prerogative of setting the pace for the stake. If a handler speeds the course, he should be requested by the judge or the marshal to refrain. If he continues, the entry should be penalized accordingly. If a handler desires to walk the course, the remaining handler, if mounted, should proceed at a corresponding gait and in no event precede the foot handler. On the other hand, if the foot handler unduly holds up the mounted handler, the mounted handler may, with permission of the judges, proceed. It should be to the credit of the dog if he voluntarily backs or honors another pointing dog. In general, being a breeder’s stake, the inherent qualities of the dog that demonstrates its potential as an outstanding all-age or shooting dog should be used as the criteria by the judges in their final decision. Rules and Conditions for the Futurity 1.

Eligibility. Only those dogs that have been properly nominated will be allowed to enter the National Futurity.

2.

Purse. All of the nominations and entry fees, less the expense of operations, will form the purse to be paid.

3.

Placements. Dogs will be considered for three placements: First, Second, and Third place.

4.

Disbursement of Purse. First place will receive 50% of the purse, divided 60% to the winner and 40% to the breeder. Second place will receive 30% of the purse, divided 60% to the owner and 40% to the breeder. Third place will receive 20% of the purse, divided 60% to the owner and 40% to the breeder.
