The Catholic Home Missions Appeal will take place next week. One way that this Appeal works to support mission dioceses here at home is by supporting seminarian formation in poor dioceses. The blessing of seminarians places a financial burden on these dioceses, which educate each seminarian at a cost of $35,000$40,000 per year. Your support is needed for these young men, so that they can return to serve their parishes. Please strengthen the Church at home by making a generous gift to next week's Appeal. Infant/Child Baptism

If you are interested in having your child/ children baptized at St. Theresa Church, Baptism classes for parents and godparents are held in the rectory from 7:00 - 8:00pm. These classes are for adults only. Dates: Oct. 16, Nov. 20, Dec. 18. Please fill out a Baptismal Request form (available on parish website) RSVP: 510.547.2777, ext. 20 or email [email protected]. Wine and Cheese

Please join us for wine and cheese on Saturday, October 18th following the 5:00 pm Mass. Come socialize with St. Theresa’s priests, staff and parishioners. Hope to see you there!

Adult: How do you translate your faith into the work of the Reign of God? Child: What three things can you do this week to show that you are a follower of Jesus? PLEASE REMEMBER IN YOUR PRAYERS ALL THOSE WHO ARE ILL ESPECIALLY: Matt Mercier, Barbara McQuaid, Marguerite Bachand, Fr. Patrick Goodwin, Janet Mahoney, Elsie Giuntoli, Irene Clark, Archbishop Alexander Brunett, Pat Giambroni, Daniel Sullivan, Dave DeMonte, Sven Cooper Little, Nadine McMillan, Diane Zukowski, Tom O’Malley, Veronica Carvalhal, Heidi Parmelee, Msgr. Ray Breton, Lee Thacher, Michael Bamrick, Royanne Gwynn, Denise Bridges, Fredrika May, Antonia Tinajero, Susan Ingersoll, Lawrence Nelson.

Perhaps you, as I did last year, plowed through the rather difficult survey asking me how I, as an ordinary Catholic, felt about Church teaching on the family and married life. It was difficult. And I wondered, what will become of this? Will it truly be read and included somehow in responses which make it all the way to Rome? As a married woman, and adult Catholic, the current Extraordinary Synod in Rome is perhaps the most interesting, hopeful, and exciting thing I have witnessed. Each day I receive emails from various groups which give me glimpses of what’s happening. And I do have great hope in this very pastoral leader of our church, Pope Francis. At a prayer vigil the night before the Synod began, where tens of thousands of people were gathered on St. Peter’s square, Pope Francis proclaimed, “We must lend our ears to the beat of this era and detect the scent of people today, so as to be permeated by their joys and hopes, by their sadness and distress, at which time we will know how to propose the good news of the family with credibility.” In his opening statement to the Bishops and Cardinals gathered he said, "Speak out. Let no one say: 'This can not be said'...After the last consistory (February 2014)...a Cardinal wrote to me saying: pity that some Cardinals have not had the courage to say some things out of respect for the Pope, believing perhaps that the Pope thought something different. This is not good, this is not collegiality, because you have to say everything that you feel you have to say...without timidity. And, at the same time, you should listen with humility and accept with an open heart what your brother says." He ended exhorting all, "...please...speak with frankness and listen with humility." And as the pope preached on last Sunday’s gospel, he told our bishops and cardinals, “God's "dream" is his people...But in both ancient prophecy and in Jesus' parable, God's dream is thwarted….In Jesus' parable, he is addressing the chief priests and the elders of the people, in other words the "experts", the managers. To them in a particular way God entrusted his "dream", his people, for them to nurture, tend and protect from the animals of the field...Out of greed and pride they want to do with it as they will, and so they prevent God from realizing his dream for the people he has chosen….

Synod Assemblies are not meant to discuss beautiful and clever ideas, or to see who is more intelligent... They are meant to better nurture and tend the Lord's vineyard, to help realize his dream, his loving plan for his people...We [the bishops] too can be tempted to "take over" the vineyard, because of that greed which is always present in us human beings. God's dream always clashes with the hypocrisy of some of his servants." Pope Francis’s challenging words give me great hope for the Holy Spirit to work in our leaders’ hearts. Let’s continue to pray daily for Pope Francis and all those gathered at the Synod. Let’s also pray for our entire Church, that all of us will renew our faith, our commitment to be disciples of Jesus, so that we can bring his love and healing to our world. Blessings, Sharon Chipman (St. Theresa Faith Formation Director)

Parish Community News Lector Workshop

A Car-Wash During a Drought???

If you are interested in becoming a Lector or are currently a Lector there will be a workshop on Saturday, October 25th at 9:00 am in the church. Everyone is welcome.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS for the annual Teen Confirmation Car-Wash; however THIS year we will have a “waterless car-wash.” That’s right, as responsible stewards of the earth, we have found a nontoxic, environmentally friendly product which will wash cars with very little water, about a quart per car. Sharon Chipman has tested it her car and it did a beautiful job! The Waterless Car Wash will be Sunday October 19th from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm here at St. Theresa’s on the upper lot. Proceeds of our car-wash go toward our service projects for the 2014-2015 year.

Acknowledging those in Military Service

On the weekend of November 8 & 9, we would like to include the names of all family members and friends that are currently serving in the military in our prayers at Mass. The names will be read as part of the Prayers of the Faithful. You may submit names by going to the parish website sttheresaoakland.org and clicking on the link on the home page, or by sending an email to [email protected] or leaving the name at the parish office. All Souls Day - November 2 Mass of Remembrance

All are invited to attend the 9:00 am Mass on November 2nd which will remember your loved ones who have died. Please bring photographs of the people you are remembering to place on a table in the sanctuary. There will be a reception following in the hall.

CPR and Basic First Aid training.

It’s the perfect time to get your CPR and Basic First Aid training so you can help in case of an emergency before professional help arrives. Are you a CYO coach who spends time with the students on weeknights and weekends? Would you know what to do as a first response if a child becomes injured on the court or on the field? Are you a Parishioner who is interested in learning more about assisting others in an emergency? Ask yourself this… would you know what to do in a

cardiac, breathing or first aid emergency? This course is not for healthcare providers (i.e. firefighters, doctors) but is good for teachers, coaches, parents, community and the workplace.

(Middle School - Grades 6, 7 & 8)

The class should take approximately 3 hours. The cost is $30. Advance registration required, 20 adults maximum. To register, please contact Ron Leggett at R&B CPR and First Aid Training, 510-295-7584 or email: [email protected]
