Be the One ....

In today’s gospel we hear how Jesus, continuing on his journey to Jerusalem, heals ten lepers. This is a story primarily about faith and reminds us that faith is sometimes found in unlikely places. Ten people afflicted with leprosy cry out to Jesus. Moved with pity, Jesus heals all ten. However, only one is described as glorifying God and returning to thank Jesus. The one who returns is a Samaritan. Samaritans were despised in Jewish circles because they were considered apostates. They had deviated from what was considered Orthodox Jewish Practice, by intermarrying and adopting foreign customs. It is significant, therefore, that Jesus commends the Samaritan for his faith, which has been his salvation. Throughout St.Luke’s Gospel Jesus encounters faith in unexpected places. Another lesson for us in this gospel passage has to do with salvation. All ten of the lepers were given the gift of healing, but in his gratitude to God for this gift, the Samaritan found salvation. Our salvation is found in recognizing the gifts and talents we have been given and knowing to whom we should and must offer our thanks. This gospel can be used on Thanksgiving Day - it is very suitable for that day when we should ask ourselves if we sufficiently express our gratitude to God and our fellow human beings for the many blessings we have received. The Parish Picnic takes place Sunday and I am looking forward to meeting many of you at this event. This gathering provides us with the opportunity to come together for fellowship and fun, something ever more necessary in this busy world. As the aphorism says pithily “all work and no play makes Jack and or Jill a dull person.” I wish to express my appreciation and thanks to Richard Hernandez, Anny Beeson, and the entire organizing committee for making today possible. Thanks are also due to all those who helped to make our St.Francis celebrations so prayerful and memorable this year.

This Week!

St Francis St. Vincent de Paul Conference

The St. Francis Outreach Ministry would like to establish a St. Vincent de Paul Conference at our parish. Vincentians gather together in groups called conferences which focus on spirituality, fellowship, and works of charity. Works of Charity may include homeless services and home visits to the poor.

St. Francis Pathways For Justice

To establish a conference we must first identify a leadership group consisting of volunteers serving as President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. We can then develop a plan of action to identify services that can be offered to assist our parishioners.

Forming Consciences For Faithful Citizenship Please join us for an evening of shared information and conversation. Thursday, October 13, 2016 Brunsman Hall • 7:00 – 8:30 pm

If you are interested in being considred for a leadership position, please contact Richard Hernandez at RichardH@ Stfrancisparish.com or 916-443-8084 ext. 114 to meet and review the program.

We will: • Share our church’s teaching on our engagement in the political life of our nation. • Review ballot propositions that are endorsed by the California Conference of Catholic Bishops. • Provide information sources that will help us in voting our “conscience” as we exercise our rights and duties as participants in our democracy.

Those interested in volunteering should possess a great desire to work with the poor and needy, make the required time commitment, and possess skill sets of working with groups and conducting training. In advance, thank you very much and we look forward to implementing this very exciting program to serve our parish.

“The Church cannot and must not remain on the sidelines in the fight for justice”. - Pope Francis; Evangelii Gaudium, no. 183

Please join us in Brunsman Hall on Oct. 20, as this is a wonderful way to dialogue together.

Oct. Year of Mercy Reflection “God is not known through grand ideas and extensive study, but rather through the littleness of a humble and trusting heart.”

Throughout the Jubilee Year of Mercy, the U.S. Bishops are providing a monthly reflection on a Scripture passage that Pope Francis refers to in his statement “The Face of Mercy. “ The following are questions for our reflection for October*.

Pope Francis @Pontifex, 10/01/16 photo from Pope Francis Instagram

Lk 15:1-32; MV, no. 9

“I tell you, in just the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance.”(Lk 15:7) “In just the same way, I tell you, there will be rejoicing among the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” (Lk 15:10)

Weekly Readings Sunday: 2 Kgs 5:14-17; Ps 98:1-4; 2 Tm 2:8-13; Lk 17:11-19 Monday: Gal 4:22-24, 26-27, 31 — 5:1; Ps 113:1b-5a, 6-7; Lk 11:29-32 Tuesday: Gal 5:1-6; Ps 119:41, 43-45, 47-48; Lk 11:37-41 Wednesday: Gal 5:18-25; Ps 1:1-4, 6; Lk 11:42-46 Thursday: Eph 1:1-10; Ps 98:1-6; Lk 11:47-54 Friday: Eph 1:11-14; Ps 33:1-2, 4-5, 12-13; Lk 12:1-7 Saturday: Eph 1:15-23; Ps 8:2-3ab, 4-7; Lk 12:8-12 Sunday: Ex 17:8-13; Ps 121:1-8; 2 Tm 3:14 — 4:2; Lk 18:1-8

Reflection Questions 1. Do you take time to celebrate and rejoice in your relationship with God? Why do you think it is important to include this sense of joy in your Christian life? What does your family or parish community do to celebrate and acknowledge the mercy and love God has for those who return to their faith? 2. Think back to a time when you were lost or when you lost something. How did it feel when you made your way back to a place you knew or found what you were looking for? Can you imagine God’s response to your return to him or an opening of your heart more to receive his mercy? What would he say to you? How would you rejoice with him? * View the entire October reflection at http://bit.ly/1QbUx44

Second Collections???

Children’s Liturgy of the Word

During the Liturgy of the Word at our 9:30 am Mass, children K-4th grade are escorted from the church to the Parish Center Chapel by an adult catechist. No registration required. Parents may accompany their children.

“What was this?” people asked. “We’ve never had second collections before!”

Church Tours: 4th Sundays following the Noon Mass. Communion Visitation

Currently, the monthly special collections requested by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops are identified to our parish in the bulletin and in the announcements the week before the collection, with special envelopes placed in the pews. On the collection weekend those who wish to contribute to the special collection simply put the envelope in the basket with the regular collection for church operations. This means that there is no opportunity to contribute cash to the special collection because there is no way to designate where that cash is intended to go.

To request a visit for you or a loved one, please email: [email protected]. Please include your phone number in your email.

Contemplative Prayer

Mondays 6:00 pm in the Parish Center Chapel. Tuesdays after 12:10 pm Mass in St. Clare Chapel.
