St Peter’s Campus BYOD INFORMATION PACK BYOD Device Program All Saints College St Peter’s Campus

At All Saints College St Peter’s Campus the use of technology has become a fundamental and integral component to assist students in their learning. As a school which seeks to support our learners through a range of teaching and learning strategies, we recognise that digital literacy is a skill required for job opportunities and life beyond school. Whilst technology does not replace all traditional methods of teaching, it is an additional tool that students need to function confidently and appropriately in society and the workplace of the future.

This booklet contains advice and information regarding student owned devices for 2016 1

The Nature of Contemporary Pedagogy. The twenty first century has seen a significant change in the types of work being undertaken. There has been a shift from manufacturing and production to information and creative industries. Concurrently there has been a dramatic increase in the complexity of skills and information required to undertake many of these jobs. The nature of work and the types of social interactions has been transformed by information and communication technologies. Employers today are looking for people who are able to make informed decisions, share information, communicate effectively and solve complex problems in creative and innovative ways.

How do we Build Skills in our Young People? Every student at St Peter’s needs to be ready for the world of today and tomorrow. To successfully face higher education coursework, career challenges and a globally competitive workforce, our schools must align classroom environments with real world environments by fusing the three Rs and four Cs. o

Critical thinking and problem solving

Communication

Collaboration

Creativity and innovation

Having “anywhere, anytime” access to a personal device allows each pupil greater diversity for learning, providing a space for personalised, flexible learning beyond the classroom walls. This allows students to live locally whilst learning globally - through the use of external resources accessed via the world wide web. (Personalising Education: from research to policy and practice: Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, 2007)

Involvement in interactive sites and software such as MS OneNote, Edmodo, Padlet, and Prezi provide important opportunities for collaboration and communication, improving relationships in the classroom through a greater level of interaction between students, their peers and their teachers. This environment, where it is easy to share work in progress and research with peers and teachers is the environment students will live and work in during their future.

St Peter’s Curriculum Framework outlines the school’s commitment to providing the highest standards of education to our students. The Framework highlights the need to have innovative learning environments and virtual environments. To meet the learning needs of our students and prepare them for the future, a personal device becomes an essential learning tool.

What is BYOD and how does it Work? In 2016 all students at St Peter’s will require a device for their learning. At the moment there are two programs running at the school: a school managed 1:1 program and a BYOD program or Bring Your Own Device Program. Parents will be required to supply a device that suits the needs of their child’s learning and family budget. This booklet outlines minimum requirements and suggested models that have been carefully considered by the All Saints College Learning Technology Coordinators and IT staff. These have been chosen for the functional requirements needed in a school setting; the hardware and software specifications; and the variety of price points they offer families. Alternatively you can bring something of your own choosing that meets our device specification. There are minimal operating system requirements. However, any software requirements will be provided at the school. Students and parents are required to sign a participation agreement that sets out the expectations of BYOD use and practise at school. A member of the school‘s IT support staff, is available to troubleshoot minor wireless issues, answer questions and give limited assistance. However, the school does not manage, support, own or warranty the device – it is your device.

In Summary the BYOD Program seeks to: 

Recognise that technology and choices about technology are very much personal.

Acknowledge that technology in education means more than meeting specific curriculum requirements.

Give families, freedom to make technology choices that suit you and all your circumstances.

What type of device can we bring? A range of devices in a range of price categories meet the device specifications. Costs for devices are usually based on the power of the processor installed. For example the atom or quad core processor cannot perform as many functions as the i3 or i5 processor. However, the atom processor is more than suitable for the educational needs of your child at St Peter’s. All devices require an active digitizer stylus. For students in Years 7 - 8 the devices we are suggesting have an atom processor. These will be perfectly adequate for the work students will be expected to complete. Students in Years 9 – 10 and Years 11-12 will require the i3 or i5 processor. Consideration of a device suitable for electives in Stage 6 needs to be undertaken here. If your child is planning to choose electives with a high degree of technology use in Years 11-12, such as graphic and visual design, you might consider a more powerful i7 processor. You should carefully consider all your options for purchase and lease/rent-to-buy. There is no time frame connected to BYOD like our previous 3 year 1:1 models as we recognize devices change quickly in the market place and the needs of students change as they begin to select subject in years 11& 12. Some of the device specification requirements are quite particular. If you choose one of our recommended devices, you won't have to worry about whether it ticks all the requirements. Additionally, it's possible you already own or use a device which meets the device specification, in which case can simply bring that. St Peter’s Maitland has taken strides to integrate device use into many aspects of teaching and learning. Your investment allows the school to maximise learning outcomes for your child. 3

Frequently Asked Questions What is BYOD? BYOD is a program whereby students will be able to bring a familiar personal device to school to use as their primary technological device. The school will provide the ability to connect compatible devices to a filtered internet service. What will be provided by the school? The school will provide FREE access to Microsoft Office 365 as well as access to a filtered Wi-Fi internet service. Will there be a help desk for students to access technical support? Yes. Students will have limited support for minor trouble shooting problems from the IT support team. However damages and breakages are at the families’ arrangement. Who pays for the technology brought to school? These devices will be purchased by and remain the property of the student/ family. What about Device Security? The school does not own the device, support the device or warranty the device. Experience from the previous Commonwealth-funded Digital Education Revolution (DER) scheme highlighted that students who took good care of their device and considered themselves the device's owner rarely had device security issues. Internet access on the device will be filtered at school and students will be prohibited from connecting to other networks while at school. What about breakages? It is strongly suggested that you consider specific accidental damage insurance for the device. You can specifically list the item on your home contents insurance, or you can purchase an Accidental Damage Protection plan for your device. Accidental Damage Protection is available as an option for all our recommended devices. Will it be safe in the bag? We recommend that each device has its own cover or case and is carried inside school bags, remaining out of sight for all travel to and from St Peter’s. What if I cannot afford a device? Recommended devices that meet the minimum specification will start from $600 which is lower than past school 1:1 costs. This booklet includes flexi-rent figures where the device is paid off over a payment plan. Parents who have difficulty meeting this cost are invited to contact the Principal to discuss support options.

Can I choose another device model? Yes. However, be sure to consult the specifications carefully. The school has conducted extensive research to select the devices best suited to the needs of our students that can best be supported by the school’s network and represents premium value. Apple devices will not be supported.

Can my child install their own personal software on the device?

6

Yes. Students will be able to place music, licensed/freeware software, pictures etc. onto the device. All files/applications must adhere to national copyright guidelines. Students must not install applications that support illegal/inappropriate activities. If software, images or other media are identified as illegal serious consequences will be enforced. Who is responsible for the data on the device? Students are responsible for the data on their device at all times. It is their responsibility to make regular backups to protect their work from loss. Is wireless network/internet connectivity available at school? Yes. The school has installed a wireless network in all student areas and this network will be available for student device use. Student access to the internet will continue to be filtered at school. Will students be able to recharge their device at school? No. Students are expected to bring their device to school fully charged each day. 960 charging cables are a serious safety concern. Will my child be expected to bring his/her device to school every day? Yes – except specific days as advised by the Principal (e.g. swimming carnival). Teachers at the school are transforming the way they teach to take advantage of students having unlimited use of computing devices. Daily access to the device is required to assist with curriculum implementation anywhere, anytime. .

Setting up the device for best practice at school. Many students have Gmail and Microsoft accounts. In the interests of a smooth transition it is strongly suggested that students set up their devices with their school account first and add personal accounts later. This stops a vast array of connection issues at the beginning of the school year. If you are not confident to do this at home your child will be fully supported at school.
