Greetings, As you know our Rector will be on Sabbatical for the next couple of months and will return on August 1. We all wish him rest, relaxation, and refilling of his spiritual tank! But when it comes to the Vestry, it is business as usual. We have had and will continue to have a wonderful Stewardship Campaign over the last 18 months or so and we on the Vestry are grateful for the hard work of many members of this committee led by Lisa Guthrie. Our Stewardship Campaign consists of three vital parts: Annual Giving, Planned Giving, and Work & Wisdom. One area in particular that you will hear more about in the near future is what our Planned Giving team has put together. Therefore, I feel that it is very important for our congregation to understand the differences of two key components of funding for St. Peter’s. These two components are the Restoration Association and the St. Peter’s Foundation. Below I have outlined, with the assistance of our Treasurer, Stuart Burnett, an overview of each organization, its history, and the areas of St. Peter’s these two organizations can support. The St. Peter’s Church Restoration Association was founded on July 20, 1922 to support the preservation and eventual restoration of the old parish church. Since its founding, the Restoration Association has worked closely with the Vestries of St. Peter’s to fund these ongoing activities. Traditionally the board and officers of the Restoration Association have been members of St. Peter’s; however, there is no direct connection between the Restoration Association and the parish Vestry. The Restoration reserves its funds for the preservation and maintenance of the historic church building and grounds. The Restoration Association manages an endowment in excess of $300,000. The Restoration is a 501(c)(3) corporation, so gifts to the Restoration Association are tax deductible. Contributions to the Restoration Association sent to the church address are forwarded to the Association’s Treasurer, George Pinelli, for deposit. The Association reports on its financial status and its support of St. Peter’s at its annual business meeting held following the 11 am service on the third Sunday in September. The St. Peter’s Parish Foundation was created in December 1997 as a 501(c)(3) corporation to receive a gift from Mrs. Margie Goodall of 551 acres of land located east of the New Kent Courthouse. The Vestry of the church serves as the members of the Foundation and elects a five-member board to manage the Foundation’s business. The Foundation Board elects officers from its membership. Initially the Foundation was funded by a select cutting of timber off the land and income from leasing the hunting rights. In 2005, speculative interest in land in New Kent and surrounding counties reached a peak and the Foundation was approached by several developers seeking to purchase the land. In May 2006, an offer to purchase the land for $1,212,640 was accepted. The Foundation Board placed the proceeds from the sale in a permanently restricted endowment. These funds are currently invested with the Trustees of the Funds, the investment corporation of the Diocese of Virginia. The market value of the endowment as of March 31, 2016 was $1,760,670. The Foundation Board, with Vestry approval, has placed restrictions on the amount of funds that can be spent in any given year and what the funds can be used for. Foundation funds are used primarily for major repairs and upgrades to the Church, Parish House, and grounds. Since 2006, the Foundation has contributed significantly to several parish projects including major upgrades of the septic and HVAC systems, as well as the current Parish House renovations. While St. Peter’s is fortunate to have these two organizations which provide significant support for the maintenance of our 300-year-old Church and 50-year-old Parish House, both organizations prohibit the use of their funds for operational expenses such as staff salaries, electricity, propane, insurance, and other expenses associated with running the church and its programs on a daily basis. These expenses are funded by the Annual Giving Campaign conducted each fall when our parishioners pledge their financial commitment to support St. Peter’s operational expenses and salaries for the staff. Pledges from the Annual Giving Campaign account for 80% of our operational income. On the expense side, staff salaries account for 72% of our annual budget while the remaining 28% of the annual budget pays all of the other expenses associated with running the church and its programs on a daily basis. The Restoration Association and Foundation do not typically contribute to any of these expenses. In conclusion, it is our hope that this Planned Giving overview has been enlightening. We are truly blessed with a wonderful congregation who supports all of our programs and ministries, not just financially, but also with your time and talent. There are so many ways to contribute to St. Peter’s, which makes us a vibrant and active church. St. Peter’s needs YOU!

Your Vestry at Work—Recent Highlights

O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight O’er the ramparts we watch’d were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there, O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Cemetery Update: Thomas Evelyn and Kendall Hatley attended the April Vestry meeting to provide a cemetery update. Jayne Pinelli joined Thomas and Kendall for a clean up day where headstones were washed and brush was cleared. The removal of several trees opened the area. There are now 72 additional traditional burial plots and 200 cremation plots. With the Vestry’s direction, the committee hopes to have some of the lots available for sale soon. There is more work and planning to be done, so stay tuned for updates!

Parish House Renovation: If you have been in Richardson Hall, you have witnessed the hard work that has taken place under Joyce Peterson’s capable leadership! While many of the improvements are pleasing to the eye, much necessary work has been done that cannot be seen. Joyce attended the April Vestry meeting to update the group on what remains of the original list of items that needed to be addressed. About half of that list has been completed. The Vestry thanks Joyce for her tireless efforts in working with us and numerous contractors.

Art Committee: With the updates in Richardson Hall came the decisions as to which pieces of art were to go back on the walls. Abbitt Woodall consulted with Joyce Peterson, Catherine Stanley, and several other parishioners to decide which artwork to hang. Abbitt presented the group’s decisions and the Vestry approved the suggestions. Catherine Stanley will hang the artwork.

Mini-Ministry Review: Under the leadership of your Senior and Junior Wardens, Catherine Pierce and Carol Nelms, the Vestry conducted a review of the ministries in our church. You hear the ministries most frequently referred to as our commission system. Each commission has a Vestry Representative and most have a facilitator. Each Vestry member was to answer the following questions: (1) What is going well? (2) What needs improvement? (3) Is there clarity about what person/groups has/have responsibilities in these areas? (4) Who needs encouragement? This has been an opportunity to give thanks for the good work occurring in our church and to identify what areas have opportunities for growth.

Christian Education Vacation Bible School

Church School News As you enjoy the simplicity of summer, let us reflect on this Church School year. What a delight it has been to work with a dedicated group of volunteers: Karen Moore, Thomas and Carrie Evelyn, David and Kristin Swynford, Kim von Hitritz, Catherine Stanley, Adriane Marshall, and Bill Lindsey. This group has willingly experimented with new ideas to invigorate our Church School. Kickoff with “American Bible Warrior Day” was well received and set the stage for a great year. Students responded positively to the “attendance incentive” with enthusiasm as evidenced by more consistent weekly attendance! Bible Family Feud was held during the Pancake Supper and was a big hit. We attempted to have fewer interruptions to the Church School hour this year, for example, crafting for the Lenten Art/Bag Lunch Sale took place on a Sunday after church instead of during the Church School hour. Students enjoyed pizza while making stepping stones and honeybee houses. Regular teacher meetings were held during the year to keep the positive energy going. Remember, we always welcome your input.

This year I am excited to share that our 2016 Vacation Bible School theme is Cave Quest: Following Jesus— The Light of the World. Children of all ages will go spelunking through dark caves with Jesus as the light. They will learn Jesus is the one who lights our way and gives us hope for each new day. His love illuminates when the path is dark. Cave Quest VBS encourages children to follow Jesus wherever he will lead them.

Finally, the highlight of each Church School year is the recognition and celebration of the graduating seniors and Church School participants. This year we send Zach Quimby and Torun Carlson off to begin a new and exciting chapter in their lives. These two amazing students are a tribute to great parenting and a supportive congregational family. Year after year, listening to our seniors speak acts as a rubber stamp as to why we as a congregation continue to place emphasis on our Church School program. Remember this important program in your prayers this summer. We will see you in the fall!

VBS will be held August 1 through August 5, from 9 am—12 noon. Our VBS will have story time, games, music, crafts, snacks. Enrollment is open to children from rising pre-school age to those preparing to enter sixth grade. Older youth and adult volunteers are needed to assist with VBS. A sign-up sheet is located in the Parish House foyer for both enrollment and volunteer slots. Please prayerfully consider how you could best volunteer your services and talents this year! If you have any questions or concerns about volunteering or registration, please contact Cricket Smolnik by e-mail at [email protected] or by phone at 804-557-3977.

~ Carol Nelms, Church School Superintendent

I hope Jesus will lead YOU to VBS!

Youth Choir It’s time to say thanks to our group of choristers: Trevor Evelyn, Camden Peace, Collin Smolnik, Caroline and Jack Swynford, Blake and Parker Wood, and Lydia Woodall. We appreciate your enthusiasm and work ethic! Please rest your voices and come back ready to make a joyful noise unto the Lord in September!

Worship A Music Note “He Who Sings, Prays Twice” In June, the choir will go on a summer hiatus. However, you will hear their lovely voices as they join the congregation during the summer months. They are a hard working and dedicated group that we are blessed to have at St. Peter’s. We’ve grown this year! Kudos to our newest members: Justin Mitchell, Chrissy Wagner, Evelyn Waring, Patty Townsend, and Rod Molina. We couldn’t do it without our faithful long-time members: Carol Nelms, Cyndi Burnett, Jayne Thomas, Kim McLean, Padgette Evelyn, Paul Rowles, and Steve von Hitritz. We miss Betty Curling, who needed to take some time off this year for health reasons. Some tidbits about a couple of members: Justin, a rising senior at New Kent, had an outstanding performance in the 2015 production of Les Miserables, and was chosen as one of the New Kent students to travel to England to perform there with the Astor College cast; and Chrissy Wagner, a music teacher at Montrose Elementary in Henrico County, is “Teacher of the Year” for her school. Congratulations to both Justin and Chrissy for their accomplishments. We thank you, the congregation, for your many encouraging words during this choral year and for joining us in the joyful singing of our hymns and prayers. Once again, I will take requests for your favorite hymns. It was a hit last summer and I had a great time incorporating them into the services. For the most part, they are those well-known and favorite hymns that you remember singing growing up, whether Episcopal, Baptist, Methodist, or other denominations. What do you need to do? Write down the hymn’s title and give it to me. Include your name so I can follow up with you, if needed. On occasion I am unable to locate the hymn and may need your assistance. I look forward to hearing our favorite hymns, and best of all, hearing you sing them!

Outreach continued Youth Mission Trip ~ Bound for Thornwell Home for Children in Clinton, SC The following overview is an excerpt found on Thornwell’s website: What began as an orphanage for children of the Civil War has evolved into a full array of services for children and families. Today, Thornwell provides residential care, academic programs, and community-based family programs throughout Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. Each year, Thornwell’s referral network receives more than 300 calls from families in crisis; and, each year, more than 100 children find their way to our home. Most come to us battered and broken, frightened, full of sadness and despair. We offer them a safe haven; a warm, loving, family-style community in which to grow and thrive. Thornwell’s residential program is all about helping children and youth—caring for them, nurturing them, helping prepare them to become the faithful individuals God created them to be. Thornwell is governed by a Board of Trustees who represents the service area of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. All of our services, programs, and ministries are made possible by the grace of God, churches and their congregants, and other generous individuals and organizations. This summer the St. Peter’s YMT team will reside on campus at Thornwell and perform service work each day while interacting with the resident children. Thornwell has a mission trip coordinator who will be working with us throughout the five-day work week. On day six, we will have a fun day white water rafting on the Chattooga River. Final sign-ups for the YMT 2016 to Thornwell Home for Children are open now. We will depart early the morning of Sunday, July 24, and return the following Sunday, July 31. Outreach continued Matthew’s Haven Matthew’s Haven would like to introduce our newest program, “The Diaper Dootie—Doing our dootie to help every little bottom.” This diaper bank is an effort to assist families with children in our community who are unable to afford diapers for their children. Did you know: • • • • •

In 2014, the poorest 20% of Americans with infants in diapers spent nearly 14% of their after-tax income on diapers? When parents do not have access to a steady supply of clean diapers, serious health consequences follow? Parents who cannot afford to send diapers to daycare are forced to stay home with their children instead of working or going to school? Diapers cost, depending on where they are purchased, between $.30 and .50 per diaper? Children should be changed 6-10 times per day, effectively costing $150 per month?

In order to get The Diaper Dootie promoted as well as to help stock it, we are hosting a community-wide diaper drive. Collection sites include EVB and Rite Aid in Quinton, Creative Critters (all locations), Stay & Play, Active Life Fitness Center, The Thriftspot, Providence United Methodist Church, St. Peter's Parish Church, Providence Forge Presbyterian Church, Westover Episcopal Church in Charles City, C & F Bank in Providence Forge, BB & T, Brickshire Gym, and Food Lion in Providence Forge. We are anticipating the diaper bank to open in the fall of 2016 for one day per month for families and agencies to receive diapers. This initiative will help numerous families and we will need many volunteers to assist with this effort. Volunteers will be needed for stocking, inventory, and client assistance. So if you are willing to give a couple of hours of your time per month, please let me or any of our volunteers know!

Back to School Fair Matthew’s Haven has also begun planning this year’s Back to School Fair (B2SF). The date is Saturday, August 13 at the Human Services Building from 8:30 am - 2:30 pm. In addition to school supplies, this will be a day fun with “tattoos,” hot dogs, drinks, popcorn, as well as hearing and vision screenings, immunizations, and more! The new undergarments we included with the school supplies last year were really appreciated, so we will definitely include them again. If anyone is interested in volunteering, we’d love to have you! There are many opportunities requiring as little or as much time as you have to give. Please contact Catherine Pierce at 804-400-4265. Spring Cleaning? Cleaning out your attic or garage? Doing any spring cleaning? Matthew's Haven has an account now at the Not New Shop in Quinton. If you would like to donate any household items to our account to be sold on consignment, Matthew's Haven would receive the benefit. When submitting your items to the shop, simply use Account #224 and please provide a list, which may be hand-written or typed. All donated items for consignment must be approved by the shop’s owner. Her contact information is 804-832-6880.

St. Peter’s Prayer Chain Ministry ~ Come Join Us! What is a prayer chain? A prayer chain consists of a group of people who have been called to the ministry of praying for others on a regular and ongoing basis. They have committed themselves to pray regularly, confidentially, and individually for the people and concerns that are requested of them. They form part of a chain through which God’s love flows and they circulate prayer requests and results amongst themselves via a communications chain. We are offering our hearts as channels, through which the healing Love of God may be directed to those for whom we are praying. We put one hand in the hand of Jesus and the other in the hand of the person(s) we are praying for, believing that the Love can flow through us to him/her/them. Prayer Requests of our Prayer Chain Are you facing a particular need, problem, illness, surgery, waiting for test results or any other special requests? Do you know someone who is? Your St. Peter’s Church family is here to help! Never underestimate the power of prayer! Confidentiality It is important that those requesting a specific prayer request understand that the members of the St. Peter’s Prayer Chain keep what they pray for confidential. While the knowledge of some of the situations and the people they pray for will be widely known, many are confidential and must not be discussed except in the context of passing on the information to another person on the chain. Be assured that your information will be kept confidential. Do you have a specific prayer request? During Fr. Paul’s Sabbatical, all prayer requests should be directed to Kim Filipowicz. Cemetery Committee Update

From the Treasurer

Our church cemetery is being expanded. The land has been cleared and surveyed for additional burial plots. We plan to offer 50 traditional plots and 50 crematory plots for sale to the members of our parish. We are working with the Vestry to better serve St. Peter’s needs, and we hope to have the expansion and improvements in order by late summer or early fall.

Due to the cost of mailings, St. Peter’s no longer mass-mails pledge/ contribution statements on a quarterly basis. However, I have the ability to generate statements and e-mail them at any time. If you would like an update on your pledge status, please e-mail your request to me at [email protected] and I will be happy to generate a statement and e-mail it to you.
