welcome

H

ave you ever stopped to think what an extraordinary organisation St Peter’s Hospice is? I have the privilege of being involved with all aspects of the Hospice and I am always conscious of the variety of activities which go to make it function. Of course we all recognise the patientfacing roles: our fantastic nurses, doctors, therapists and our many volunteers who serve meals, drive patients, and provide counselling for example. But how do you run Higher Education modules or courses to improve communication skills in Advanced Care Planning? You need to ask our Education Department. Just how do you organise Strictly Come Dancing or walking over red-hot coals or abseiling over the Avon Gorge (not simultaneously)? For that you need only ask our fundraisers and their volunteer helpers, always thinking up new ideas to raise the funds we need. What about those 47 shops? When do you switch from winter to spring wear given the unpredictability of the English climate? How do you ensure you make the most of all the donations we receive in our shops to maximise the income for the charity? There you need our Retail Team. All this before we stop to think about the staff and volunteers who administer the organisation, run our financial affairs, pay the bills, negotiate the contracts, sort out the payroll, order the goods we need, fix the IT, replace the light bulbs, grow the flowers, cook the food, clean the rooms, point visitors in the right direction, mow the grass, maintain the website, put this newsletter together, and so on and so on. St Peter’s Hospice will not work unless all these things are done; it’s a great team that does them and we are so grateful for your support. l

How we are funded We are a local charity and all of our care is provided free of charge, but it costs us around £18,000 a day to provide that care. Our income comes from:

“Becky, promise me, you’ll have a Party for Pete in September!” ecky from Bedminster is holding a Party for Pete this September with her family and friends to celebrate the life of her mother-in-law, Christine Miller.

B

“It is so easy to put on a party!” says Becky. “It could be a small party with just a few friends at home or a much larger event at school or work. You could also give it a theme and get people to dress up!”

“My fabulous mother-in-law passed away at the Hospice in September 2013 and one of the things she made me promise before she died was that I would have a Party for Pete.”

All Party for Pete hosts will receive a party pack that includes invitations, banners, leaflets and everything you need to put on a fun event. To find out more, visit www.partyforpete.org.uk or talk to Petra or Jo on 01275 391 430. l

Christine was diagnosed with terminal cancer in summer 2013. She spent the last two weeks of her life in the Hospice and was completely blown away by the care she and her family received. She was even allowed to have her dog with her!

Becky took part in the Midnight Walk a few years ago and has signed up again this year. Now she has also decided to fulfil her mother-in-law’s wish and is hosting a party this September to raise more money for St Peter’s Hospice.

garden rooms Our new Garden Rooms are unveiled

W

e are delighted that a new section of the Hospice, the Garden Rooms, have been completed. The beautiful oak structure is set in the Hospice gardens and offers a new home for our Psycho Social Spiritual team. The frame was made and erected by Westwind Oak, a local company based in Somerset, using 16 tonnes of hand-crafted oak, 150 oak beams and 500 oak pegs. It took a month to make and a day-and-a-half to put up. Once the structure was in place, work could begin with Bristol-based building contractor John Perkins to make it into a fullyfunctioning part of the Hospice. The result is a beautiful, natural-looking building with a calm and light-filled atmosphere inside. The Psycho Social Spiritual team works with patients, families and carers who may be struggling to cope with the challenges of serious illness. Staff and specially trained volunteers can offer bereavement support to individuals and groups to help them come to terms with loss. Social workers on the team can provide advice on care at

“The new Garden Rooms provide a wonderful space for patients, families and friends to reflect and relax. We are really enjoying using the building for our work,” home, statutory rights and the benefits available; and the spiritual care team helps people explore questions of meaning and purpose, sometimes including aspects of religion and faith. The team also provides therapies such as music and art, which can help people express their feelings and can be a beneficial way for families to spend some creative time together. As well as being used by the Psycho Social Spiritual team, the building provides a peaceful space for patients to enjoy. “The new Garden Rooms provide a wonderful space for patients, families and friends to reflect and relax. We are really looking forward to using the building for our work,” explains Julie Francis, Psycho Social Spiritual Team Leader. l

FOCUS ON Martin Ball, Community Nurse Specialist Martin Ball starts his day at our office in Long Ashton.

W

e work to keep our patients feeling as well as possible for as long as possible,” says Martin Ball, Community Nurse Specialist in the team that serves South Bristol and North Somerset. “From the moment I meet a patient, it’s about trying to ensure that they and their families have the best possible support and advice to maintain and improve their quality of life.”

Martin joined the Hospice four years ago after having worked at St Thomas’ Hospital in London, at the Oncology Centre in Bristol and as a Lung Cancer Community Nurse Specialist at UHB. As a Community Nurse Specialist at the Hospice, Martin’s role includes assessing patients’ needs, helping them to manage their symptoms and enabling them to access other services and healthcare professionals. His typical day starts in the office, writing up notes from the previous day’s visits and making phone calls to GPs and District Nurses. He then joins a teleconference with the other Community Nurse Specialists and the Inpatient Unit team during which they discuss admissions to the Unit. Martin starts making visits to patients at about 10am. During his first visit to a patient, Martin explains what the Hospice does and corrects any misconceptions about our work. For instance, many people don’t realise that 6 out of 10 patients who go into the Inpatient Unit are discharged

after a week or two. He also uses the first meeting to assess the patient’s physical, social, spiritual and emotional needs. He can then help them to access other services in the Hospice, such as counselling or spiritual support, and other healthcare professionals in the wider community. “The Hospice offers a complete range of services for people who have a life-limiting illness and it has the expertise to help people make the right choices for them,” says Martin. “As Community Nurse Specialists, we need to make sure that patients are accessing all the relevant services. So, for example, we might refer a patient to the Day Hospice or recommend they attend a course on breathlessness and fatigue.” Martin usually sees patients every two to four weeks depending on their circumstances and symptoms. For the vast majority of patients Community Nurses are the only Hospice staff that they’ll meet. “For many patients, Community Nurse Specialists can provide important continuity,” explains Martin. “We get to know the patient and we know the services available so we can be the link that enables the patient to access what they need.” “We’re caring for people with life-limiting illnesses but I see my role as a very positive one. We’re trying to help people find solutions where possible and have a better quality of life.” l

shop news Shops get a spring makeover One of our oldest shops on Chipping Sodbury High Street received a much-needed refurbishment at the start of the year. The shop has a much better layout and fresher look which both staff and customers have welcomed. Not to be outdone, its sister shop in Broad Street Chipping Sodbury also received a lick of paint and a new floor.

Hospice Awareness Scheme

New graphics showing the work of the Hospice have been installed in several of our shops.

6

We’re keen to let customers in our shops know how their support, purchases and donations help the Hospice. To do this, we’re starting to put up images and messages in our shops that raise awareness of the work that our nurses, doctors and other specialists do at the Hospice, and promote our fundraising events. We’ve introduced these changes to our shops in Broadmead, Horfield, Clevedon Old Church Road, Nailsea, Thornbury and Yate and we’ll be moving on to more of our shops later this year.

Spring and Summer wear now in store Spring and summer clothes, accessories and shoes are now available in our shops throughout the Bristol area. To launch the spring/summer range we arranged a fashion shoot at Ashton Court Estate. Models from Mustard Models agency offered their time for free to show off the latest styles from our Henleaze shop. Local hire company, Katy’s Campers, lent us a beautiful VW camper van, called Bert, for the day to give our photos a summery twist. We’d like to say a big thank you to the folk at Mustard Models and at Katy’s Campers for all their help. Call into our shops to pick up the latest summer bargains.

We’d love your preloved This time of year, as we dig out our summer clothes, many of us like to give our wardrobes a makeover. It’s helpful to have some new key pieces to update our outfits – and St Peter’s Hospice shops offer a great way to do this with quality brands at affordable prices. When you’re having a clear-out please remember to drop off your unwanted items at your local St Peter’s Hospice shop so that we can find them a loving home! To find your local shop visit stpetershospice.org/shops

To celebrate World Book Day, we held a special Book Promotion month in March. Paperbacks and hardbacks were on special offer in all of our 47 shops throughout the Bristol area. Our shops also created some wonderful book-themed window displays. Bestselling author Amanda Prowse supported the campaign with a visit to the Hospice, BBC radio interview and a visit to our Horfield shop.

The promotion was a huge success and we sold over 35,500 books in March. It also helped us highlight that our shops have become a destination place to buy books in Bristol.

New clearance shop We are planning to open a second clearance shop in Kingswood in May. Following the success of our first clearance shop in Broad Walk, Knowle, the Kingswood shop offers women’s, men’s and children’s clothing at knock down prices. It also has a range of accessories, shoes and books for sale.

patient story Sally Tutton talks about the care she’s received from the Hospice

S

ally, who is 41, was diagnosed with a very rare cancer called Adenoid cystic carcinoma in 2007. The cancer arises within the glands and occurs mainly in the head and neck. Doctors in Bristol were unsure how to treat Sally and she faced months of uncertainty until she heard of a surgeon in London who could help her. A 12-hour operation to reconstruct her face was successful and for the following 12 months Sally was cancer-free. However, Sally then discovered that the tumour had returned and this time it had spread to her lungs. Sally started being cared for by the Hospice in 2008 and she has been seeing the same Community Nurse Specialist, Lynne McInnes, since 2010. As well as working out the right medical care, Lynne has supported Sally and her family and helped them to understand things. At a point when her seizures became a lot worse, Sally spent a week in the Inpatient Unit at the Hospice. “It felt like a home as well as a hospital. The staff really see people as individuals,” says Sally. “When my daughters came to visit me, there were jigsaws and games that they could play and they enjoyed going along to the cafe for a cake.”

8

Patient Sally Tutton

Staff in the Inpatient Unit were able to stabilise Sally’s symptoms, enabling her to return home. Sally has attended a 12-week course at the Hospice where patients are encouraged to focus on different areas of life, such as energy levels, exercise, nutrition, sleep and breathing control. She has also worked with our Music Therapist, Jane Lings, to write a song for her children, aged 9 and 11. Sally works at Southmead Hospital with young adults with renal problems and she is currently going to the Hospice one day a week. “For me, it’s really important to keep working. But it’s also important to have my day at the Hospice. It’s a day for me – I read the paper and catch up on sleep. I can really relax here.” Sally and her family find the Hospice Advice Line very helpful and reassuring, especially at weekends when anxiety can sometimes make her seizures worse. “The Hospice is unique – if they say they’re going to do something you know that they’ll get it done,” explains Sally. “What really surprised me is that it is not a place to end but a place to stay and carry on.” l

hospice life We’ve had some exciting visitors to the Hospice already this year… Noel Edmonds and his wife, Liz, visited the Hospice. Bestselling author, Amanda Prowse, also visited the Hospice and went on to support our Book Promotion month in March. And Jack FM Breakfast host, Ian Downs (aka Downsy) came to find out about our work before co-hosting our Strictly Come Dancing event with BBC Points West presenter, Jemma Cooper.

A local blacksmith is currently creating a beautiful Memory Tree sculpture for us. The tree is due to be completed at the end of May when it will be positioned in the corner of the Hospice gardens, creating a tranquil place for families to spend time remembering a loved one. Families will be able to buy a copper leaf which is then engraved with the name of their loved one. The leaves will be hung on the tree, creating a poignant and lasting way to remember that special person. For more information on the Memory Tree and how to purchase a leaf, please call Jo Gibbons on 01275 391 406.

From top: Noel Edmonds and staff from the Facilities Team; Ian Downs at the Hospice; Amanda Prowse and her husband Simeon meet our chef Andy King and our Head of Supporter Relations, John Flanagan; Jemma Cooper and Ian Downs with Michele Weber for the launch of Strictly Come Dancing.

fundraising groups news In the limelight… Constance Bowdler from Chew Valley Support Group The Chew Valley group was established in 2005 after Hospice supporter, Sue Webb, held a meeting to get people involved in setting up a fundraising group in the area. Constance Bowdler, a Chew Magna resident, had always been interested in hospice care especially after the death of her beloved Dad. She had undergone treatment for breast cancer the year before and having nursed others professionally, thought that the fundraising group sounded interesting. Sue held a coffee morning in February 2005 at her house, where she offered the potential fundraisers a marquee in her garden if they fancied organising an event. The group decided to hold a Moroccan Evening in August that year which was a great success and raised an astonishing £5,136! Since then, the committee has continued with many of the original members still involved. Constance loves what she does for the Hospice. She admires the specialist care that the Hospice gives people in the community, making sure they live as painfree as possible. She is a great organiser and loves being with people. Her group not only fundraises but helps spread the word about the Hospice in the

Tickets cost £6 and are available from the St Peter’s Hospice Shop in Portishead or by telephoning 01275 842 881. Entrance is by ticket only so buy your’s early to avoid disappointment. After some busy knitting, we presented £200 to the Hospice raised from the sales of our knitted Christmas puddings. One member of the group produced an amazing 300 puddings which she sold to family and friends.

Jenny and Colin Wring in Portishead The ‘Portishead Independents’ had a Musical Evening at Redcliffe Bay Hall on 1 February. The Barnacle Bouys performed along with Molly, Mia and Tuesday. Despite the terrible weather we are happy to announce that we raised £565 from the evening. We also held a Coffee and Cake morning on Saturday 22 March at Portishead Marina where we sold the produce from our St Peter’s Hospice Ready, Steady, Bake.

Chew Valley Fundraising Group The New Year saw the return of our ever popular Bridge Lunch in January which was very well attended and raised a tremendous £1,300. Hospice supporters Gill and Frank Curtis of Stanton Drew hosted the Group’s first coffee morning of 2014 in January raising over £340 for Hospice funds. We’d like to thank them and everyone who helped to make the morning a success. We are grateful for the continuing support which we receive and look forward to welcoming familiar and new faces to our events in 2014.

Severnside Fundraising Group In December, our bazaar was very well attended, with takings exceeding expectations, and a concert by Cantanti to welcome Christmas provided a delightful evening. Christmas puddings sold well again – thanks to all who knitted, sewed and stuffed them and to those who bought them. We welcomed the New Year with a winter warmer lunch where 60 people enjoyed cottage pie and crumble. In March, 28 teams took part in our annual quiz in the Armstrong Hall which was another great evening. Thank you to the Olveston Quilters for their lovely quilt which they kindly donated and which was won by Ruth, one of our volunteers. We are grateful for all the donations we receive. We would like to say a special thank you to Sue and Graham Hawks of Almondsbury for their generous gift following the festive illuminations in their garden and house. We have also held collections at Tesco, Almondsbury Garden Centre and Wyevale Garden Centre. Finally our thanks go to everyone in the Severnside area for their continued support which has enabled us to raise £12,000 for the Hospice last financial year.

I am really looking forward to continuing the fantastic work in growing the Local Lotto. Our members contribute over £13,000 a month towards patient care. The support we receive is so important, enabling the Hospice to continue caring for our patients and their families.
