Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord

Thoughts from our Pastor Rev. John P. Broheimer Happy New Year to everyone! I hope your celebrations of Christmas are continuing to go on. The Church traditionally celebrates the Birth of Our Lord all the way to February 2nd. It’s too bad that our culture in the United States celebrates Christmas starting in November and then everything is done the day after Christmas. The Church’s way of celebrating for an extended time after Christmas is a different and better way to look at things. So keep celebrating. January 6 is the usual date of Epiphany when the Church remembers Jesus’ being manifested to the Gentiles who come to visit him and give him homage. In the United States the bishops decided that we should move this Solemnity of Epiphany to a Sunday so that all people may experience a greater celebration of this mysterious event. The central meaning of the Mystery of the Epiphany is that Jesus is made known to be the Light of the Nations. In him all people of all times and places can find salvation. He is not a Savior reserved to only certain people or certain nations. He calls all people to himself to find peace, love, purpose, and life. Celebration of Life Dinner The annual Celebration of Life Dinner and Auction sponsored by Nebraskans United for Life and NuLife Pregnancy Resource Center is Friday, January 15, at the Scott Conference Center in Omaha. Keynote speaker is Sue Ellen Browder, author of Subverted - How I Helped the Sexual Revolution Hijack the Women’s Movement. Tickets $45 per person. No charge for Clergy and Religious. 6:00 pm Social hour and silent auction, 7:00 pm dinner and oral auction followed by keynote speaker. For information 402-399-0299. Rectory Housekeeper Position Part-time St. Peter’s has a position available for a part-time housekeeper in the rectory. This position is for 20-24 hours per week with flexible hours for a competitive wage. if interested in filling out an application or submitting a résumé, please contact the parish office. After some years of service as the rectory housekeeper, Renata Wyldes’ husband received a job promotion and she now has an opportunity to be a full-time homemaker in her own home. We are very happy for her and wish her well. May God bless her and her family.

The Epiphany of the Lord

Feast of the Most Holy Name of Jesus - January 3rd In the Name of Jesus we obtain every blessing and grace for time and eternity, for Christ has said: "If you ask the Father anything in my name he will give it you." (John 16:23) Therefore the Church concludes all her prayers by the words: "Through Our Lord Jesus Christ", etc. From the Mass for the Feast of the Most Holy Name of Jesus: ENTRANCE ANTIPHON Phil 2: 10-11 At the name of Jesus, every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. ALLELUIA Matthew 1: 21 She will bear a son, and you will name him Jesus, because he will save people from their sins. GOSPEL A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke 2:21-24 When eight days were completed for his circumcision, he was named Jesus, the name given him by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, they took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, just as it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord," and to offer the sacrifice of "a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons," in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord.
