SALEM UPDATE NEWS OF THE SALEM AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Dec. 2014 The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce held their Annual Meeting on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 @ The Salem Golf Club. We proudly honored the 2014 “Citizen of the Year”, “Large Business of the Year”, and “Small Business of the Year”. “Outstanding Citizen of the Year” - Atty. Larry Cecil. In private practice since 1976, he concentrates on Trust and Estate Planning at Fitch, Kendall, Cecil, Robinson & Barry Co., LPA. Larry’s heart is in scouting. Since 1990, he has impacted the lives of boy scouts in our community through his service as Scoutmaster of Troop Two. An Eagle Scout himself, he has received numerous awards on a local and national level for his strong leadership and programming abilities. A former President of the Rotary Club of Salem, Larry chaired the Exchange Student Program for twenty four years. He was the Rotary District Outbound and Inbound Exchange Student Chairman and he also has served as the Assistant District Governor for Rotary District #6650. Rotary has honored him with several Rotarian awards. Larry is a member of the First United Methodist Church in Salem where he has actively been involved in many ways. He was instrumental in planning and then implementing the development of the ROC; (Representatives of Christ). This youth program started in 2009 and Larry remains the Chairman of the Board, today. Larry serves as a Board Member of the Salem Community Foundation and he is a past President of the Columbiana County Bar Association. He has deservedly been honored by numerous local organizations for his achievements and leadership abilities. “Large Business of the Year” - Fresh Mark, Inc. Fresh Mark, Inc. located at 1735 South Lincoln in Salem is a leading supplier of smoked and processed meats to the retail and food service industries. Their commitment to quality and safety has enabled them to grow from a regional provider to a nationwide supplier of bacon, ham, wieners, deli and luncheon meats, dry sausage and other specialty meat items. Fresh Mark’s customers include major grocery chains, well-known restaurants and food service operators throughout the country. Many of their products are distributed and enjoyed internationally. As one of the largest private companies in the industry, Fresh Mark’s expertise, quality manufacturing, and innovative product and service offerings rank them among the top 40 of the nation’s leading 150 meat and poultry companies. With a local workforce of 830 employees, the company believes that the true measure of success is their customers. For years, the growing base of loyal customers has come to rely on the quality, safety and consistency of Fresh Mark’s Sugardale® and Superior’s Brand® Meats products. Fresh Mark has been operating in Salem since 1984 and proudly expanded its operations several years ago. The employees of Fresh Mark serve the Salem community in numerous ways. They are a leading contributor to the local United Way campaign, and they were the winner of the local Relay for Life campaign this past year. Fresh Mark donates to a large number of charities and organizations, and they sponsor numerous blood drives throughout the year. Fresh Mark employees are proud to serve as members of the Board of Directors of many of our area’s civic organizations in and around Salem. Located in Salem’s Industrial Park at 1134 Salem Parkway, Simmers Crane Design & Services employs 56 workers who design, build, and service overhead cranes and material handling equipment. This past year brought growth to the company as they recently completed a second floor addition that houses an additional thirteen engineers and project managers. Employment has increased by 10% at their branch locations in Cleveland, OH, Erie, PA, Buffalo, NY, Milwaukee, WI and Rock Island, IL. The local corporate office in Salem has seen a total increase of nine new employees in 2014, and has plans to hire 6 to 8 new employees within the next several months. Simmers works in close collaboration with many business located in our community. They serve as a customer and a vendor to the following: Hickey Metal Fabrication, Salem Welding, Butech-Bliss, Midwest Machine, InstaCopy, Lowry Supply, Berger Electric, Tru-Cut, Columbus McKinnon and Stadium GM. Much of the work from these local companies ends up all over the United States in support of Simmers large customer base. Employees from Simmers live in and around the Salem area, and they support our schools and our local community groups and organizations. David Hughes, owner of Specialty Fab, Inc. was recognized by Ohio State Treasurer Josh Mandel for Ohioans excelling in manufacturing and skilled trades Congratulations to Vito and David! Congratulations to the SOD Center (Sustainable Opportunity Development Center) for recognition delivered at the Seventh Annual Excellence Awards Program sponsored by the Ohio Economic Development Association. The “Excellence in Economic Development Innovation” was awarded for work done by the SOD Center for Project SEEDBASE. Salem Area Safety Council Update: January’s Safety Council meeting will be held on Friday, January 16, 2015 @ Noon at the Salem Community Center. Reservations are required and can be made by contacting the Chamber office. The program will be a Safety Committee roundtable. ALL OF OUR SALEM CHAMBER MEMBERS are invited to attend the monthly meetings. It is a great opportunity to meet and network with fellow Chamber members.

Chamber Ambassador News A big “thank you” to DoLiv Publishing (cohosted by Sourballpython Studios), and Consumers National Bank for hosting Business After Hours. On November 13th Sheila Bachmeirer owner of DoLiv Publishing hosted the event celebrating the release of her book “Wisdom from the Woods-Seasons.” Attendees had a great time networking with fellow Chamber members and guests, while enjoying delicious hor’d’ouevres. Consumers National Bank welcomed Chamber members and guests at their annual holiday Business After Hours that was held on December 11th. All who attended enjoyed networking, as well as feasting on wonderful appetizers and desserts! We appreciate this annual event sponsored by our friends at CNB! Circle the date for Thursday, January 15th for the first Business After Hours event of the new year that will be sponsored by The Minor Insurance Company. Business After Hours are held January through May, and September through December.
