PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Bob Kuenster

Dear Members: HELP!!! I have been receiving numerous offers of support from our members and directors. Everyone has been most generous in their offer to just "let me know if you need help or if I can do anything." Well, people, now is the time I need you. In order for our chamber to continue in the "style we are accustomed to" and provide the activities that enrich our community, we must sell our raffle tickets. Please, do your best. Make an honest effort. Let's not be forced to discontinue or cut back on any of our programs. Instead, we can make them bigger and better. I know you have all made your mark in the business world and did not get there by being shy. We have a lot to offer and be proud of. So, get out those tickets and show your chamber what you are made of and capable of doing. You have shown your confidence in me and now I want you to know that I have confidence in you. I'm looking forward to celebrating your achievements at our Citizen of the Year Dinner. Who knows· you may be in the winners circle that night· I hope so. Linda Macfarlane

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SPONSORS "STEPPI NG OUT '84" We are always delighted to announce new money-saving benefits for Chamber members and their friends. Here's one that will bring you a delightful year of dining and entertainment. It's the "Stepping Out" Coupon Book, and it offers you excellent entertainment and dining at tremendous saVings. In today's economy, every penny counts. That's one reason why we're making the "Stepping Out" Coupon Book available. The book contains over $200.00 worth of discount coupons for local theatres and restaurants with 23 participating restaurants in the area. When you and a guest dine at most of the "Stepping Out" restaurants, you get $5.00 to $10.00 off one dinner when a second dinner of equal or greater value is purchased. But that's just part of the "Stepping Out" story. There are also a dozen two-for·one coupons for Ch icago Ridge Mall Theatres 1-2-3 and mail order discou nt movie tickets for Essaness Theatres. Best of all, they're valid seven days a week. Th is is a great chance to see fine first· run films for jUst half price. For a list of restaurants as well as a convenient business location near you for purchasing "Stepping Out," call the Chamber at 424-8300. Books also available at Chamber office, 9526 Cook. Total cost of this outstanding value only $12.00.

Beginning in 1983, unreimbursed medical expenses are deductible as an itemized deduction only to the extent they top 5 percent of your adjusted gross income. Also, the automatic $150 deduction is gone for medical insurance premiums paid. All premiums are lumped with other medical expenses, subject to the 5 percent rule. These new limitations mean that medical expense deductions that were available to many taxpayers before 1983 are now either drastically reduced or completely eliminated. And with the new limitation, every dollar of deduction is more important than ever. An overlooked strategy for married people filing jointly is when both have income and one paid big medical bills. For example, if a husband and wife each had adjusted gross income of $12,000 and the wife paid medical expenses of $2,000, the deduction on her separate return would be $1,400 ($2,000 less 5% of $12,000). On a joint return the deduction would be $800 ($2,000 less 5% of the combined income of $24 ,OOO). Advantages lost in fil ing separate returns are the two wage-earner deduction and the child care credit so careful consideration must be given each filing status. However, when questionable, the alternative computations should always be made. Dorothy Grieco, C.PA.

APOLOG IES TO ... Sal Crivellone (Su burban News Marketer) for neglecting to add him to the list of businesses taking floats in the Christmas Parade. Thank You . a little tardy but nonetheless sincere.
