Tickets please! By Steve Crank Chairman of the Ponca City Area Chamber of Commerce Fall is certainly upon us! The beautiful autumn leaves are falling from the trees, pumpkins are everywhere and the air carries upon it that familiar bite that reminds us that the holidays are just a few weeks away. We are so blessed to live in a country in which we are free to celebrate our holiday traditions and even more blessed to live in a community that openly embraces these festivities. Here in Ponca City we enjoy many celebrations of the holiday season. There is the Holiday Tree lighting at Centennial Plaza, the Lighted Christmas Parade, the return of the Christmas tree at 3 rd and Grand, and of course the gathering of tickets for the Community Wide Holiday Giveaway drawing. Each year the Community Wide Holiday Giveaway has grown and grown, and this year is proving to be no exception. 78 businesses have signed up to participate this year, setting an all time record, and our goal is to distribute over 1,000,000 tickets! The Community Wide Holiday Giveaway is the largest retail event in Oklahoma and Kansas combined, and our Chamber staff and volunteers work hard to ensure it is also the best. This promotion is a way for our home town businesses to thank you for shopping locally. There are many good reasons for us to shop Ponca City first. By keeping our dollars here locally we are providing jobs and incomes for our friends and neighbors. We keep our retail sector robust and diverse, offering a variety of goods and services. The sales tax dollars collected on your local purchases go to support our city’s street improvements as well as police and fire protection, just to name a few of the services they provide. Overall, the economic benefit to our community is tremendous. 1 million tickets equates to $10 million in retail sales! This is a project our Chamber believes in strongly, so much so that the Chamber contributes $5000 to the promotion. Additionally, all revenue generated by this project is used for advertising and promotion. So this holiday season Shop Ponca City First. Support our local retailers, ask for your tickets, and be sure to tune to your favorite radio station on December 22nd. You could be our next $5000 Santa Buck winner!

We hosted a leadership team from El Dorado Kansas October 1st. It was a great day! During the morning Steve Crank, Becky Hatton, Lee Evans and Mayor Homer Nicholson spoke to the group about the Chamber, City Projects, Tourism, and Economic Development. We had lunch in the Ball Room of the Mansion and then the group toured the Mansion and Ponca City. Thank you Osage Million Dollar Elm Casino for the use of your bus for the tour of Ponca City!

Make Plans to Attend the Leadership Ponca City Alumni Luncheon Friday December 11th Please mark your calendar for the Ponca City Leadership Alumni meeting/luncheon on Friday, December 11, featuring special guest Oklahoma Tourism Director Hardy Watkins. The event will be held in the dining room of the Ponca City Country Club starting at 11:30 a.m. Cost for this fun event is only $12.50 and you must phone the Chamber Office at 765-4400 to RSVP.

We had a great presence at the Oklahoma Governor’s Tourism Conference held in Tulsa. Our Herb Festival received the Red Bud Award for being one of Oklahoma’s top events! We learned a lot in various tourism workshops. We also got to spend time with our Lt. Governor Jari Askins and Tourism Director Hardy Watkins. Senator David Myers presented a citation to the Herb Festival volunteers in recognition of their hard work organizing this festival and for being recognized by the Oklahoma Tourism Industry as a top event!

There is no place like Ponca City during the Holidays! Check out the Tourism Web Site at www.poncacitytourism.com for all the fun activities! Don’t miss our annual Holiday Parade; Edgar Cruz Christmas Concert, Michael Londra Concert and the Festival of Angels Holiday Lights—just to name a few of the holiday events!

Support the Ponca City Annual Veterans’ Day Parade on Saturday November 7th starting at 10:30 a.m. in downtown Ponca City! We will be saluting our Active Duty and our 45th Brigade Soldiers! Plus, there will be a fly over of Tulsa Warbirds, T-28’s, P-51’s, and Air National Guard F -16’s. Lots of floats, bands, bag pipes, Shriners, bikes and of course school kids!

Congratulations to all the HOG Rally volunteers, especially Donna Hingtgen, for hosting an outstanding HOG Rally in Ponca City! Despite the weather and a collapsed tent, the comments we heard were over the top. Your positive attitude painted a great picture of Ponca City for the visiting group!! Your efforts and the efforts of many local citizens proved successful, because the weather didn’t seem to dampen anyone’s spirits! Ponca City truly has a ―can do‖ attitude and we always know we will succeed!!

The Chamber hosted a visit by Oklahoma Transportation Secretary Gary Ridley in order for him to give us an update on projects in our region and transportation needs in general for Oklahoma. The public was able to ask questions of Secretary Ridley and several centered on the need for rail service to Ponca City.

Attention Ponca City Leadership Alumni We are updating our database, and would like the assurance that we have correct contact information for you! We recently sent out a ―mass‖ e-mail to all alumni members. If you did not receive it, then we need to update your e-mail information. Keeping in touch with you, either by e-mail and through the postal service, is very important to us. Please make sure we know how to reach you! Call Nancy at the Chamber office, 765 -4400, or e-mail her at [email protected].

The Annual Standing Bear Pow Wow was a huge success this year! Our Chamber Leadership once again helped serve the elders the traditional meal that was prepared by an Osage family. It was really good! This is a great privilege to get to participate in the Pow Wow by serving the meal and also by working the information booth! We also hosted German Travel Writers during the event and they really enjoyed it!. They participated in serving the meal and also got to dance in the Pow Wow. This truly is an outstanding Ponca City event!!

Ponca City Tourism Works on Promoting Events By Tourism Coordinator Kristi Brown Ponca City Tourism was fortunate to attend the Governor’s Conference on Tourism in Tulsa. It was great to meet and network with other tourism and chamber professionals throughout the state. It was also amazing to realize Ponca City’s reputation for quality tourism promotion with the State Tourism Department. State Tourism unveiled their new website, travelok.com which will be up and running by January, 2010. This exciting new website will give Ponca City the opportunity to highlight individual attractions, events, festivals, hotels/motels and restaurants. We are currently working with the state to coordinate a workshop here in Ponca City which will teach the logistics of this new website to all interested participants. We’ll publicize the workshop when it is finalized. I’m excited about this, as we all should be! I also had the chance to meet with key figures in tourism and attend a ―tourism boot camp.‖ This seminar provided advice on organizing travel busses and tour groups; submitting story and programming ideas to Discover Oklahoma; providing local photo stills to the Oklahoma Film and Music Department; advertising and editorial opportunities in Oklahoma Today magazine; and promoting our city through destination development programs and public relations through the Oklahoma Travel Wire. It was all fantastic! November is going to be a great month for activities in Ponca City. The Poncan Theatre will be hosting An Evening with Will Rogers on November 6th. The Muchmore Photography Exhibit and Competition will be at the Ponca City Art Center throughout the month of November, beginning on November 6th. Look for Marland’s Grand Home major fundraiser “Tablescapes and Wreathscapes,” November 7-8. Entries are still available and you can purchase lunch on both days! The Veteran’s Day Parade will be November 7 th in downtown Ponca City. Our parade has been selected as a ―Regional Site Parade‖ by the Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington, so you know it’s a great one! The Poncan will be hosting the Poncan Opry’s “Tribute to Veterans Show” that evening. On November 13th The Ponca Playhouse kicks off another great play, “A Talent for Murder”. Don’t miss the Historic Home and Building Tour hosted by Ponca City Main Street on November 15th. Then on November 19th, NOC’s Kinzer Performing Arts Center will feature “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” a Tony award winning musical and comedy. Be sure and join us and the rest of the community on November 25 th for “The Night the Lights go on” free family fun at Lake Ponca Park, followed by the Community Tree lighting ceremony at City Hall’s Centennial Plaza. November 25th is also the official lighting of The Festival of Angels Lighting Display. With over 260 attractions displayed throughout the community, this is the largest lighting display in Northern Oklahoma! There’s always so much to do in this beautiful town. Just make sure to schedule time for you and your family to participate! If you’ve got something going on, be sure and let us know about it well in advance (a month is great!). We’ll work on helping you get participants and attendees, and help publicize the event. Promoting Ponca City’s events through public relations efforts has been a major goal during my first couple of months. I am actively trying to promote these events within our community and through regional outlets. I’ve created a database listing of local area newspapers and radio stations, so I can effectively send press releases and e-mail blitzes to these outlets. This type of media publicity is free, yet still has the potential to create lots of interest and brings people to Ponca City – which is the ultimate goal of Ponca City Tourism!

LORDY, LORDY LOOKS WHOSE FORTY David Myers Ponca City Development Authority Don’t look now but the Internet, that now critical lifeline to the world, turned forty on October 29th. This may come as a shock to people who are in their twenties and somehow think they invented it. Sorry to burst your bubble. Much has been written and said about the digital divide, and how it is only the young who are wired, surf, Google things, or use social media. It must be tough for adherents of this myth to learn that the largest demographic using Facebook and Twitter, by far, is people between the ages of 35 and 60. Younger people barely register on the radar screen although you would never know it by the tone of the media. In 1969, however, now seventy something Dr. Leonard Kleinrock, a computer science professor at UCLA, connected with the Stanford Research Institute through ―Interface Message Processors‖ which they called the ARPANET, the computer based communications platform that would later be called the internet. Perhaps it started with a ―Can you hear me now?‖ or even a dig at their respective football teams, but nevertheless, digital history was made that day. This, of course, was followed by 54 year old Bill Gates’ ―Windows‖ which allowed us to actually use the personal computer. That is unless you bought an Apple, invented by now 59 year old Steve Wozniak. Perhaps the real breakthrough, however, came when 65 year old year old (Dr.) Jim Clark launched Mosaic Netscape in 1994, the universal program that allowed everyone to talk to each other on the internet rather than the then-common protocol of Prodigy users talking to Prodigy users and no one talking to China. The point is that the changing economy is not built, necessarily, around twenty somethings. The new economy is for everybody. Richard Florida in his seminal book ―The Creative Class‖ is often misquoted or misunderstood to suggest that twenty somethings are the only ones who can come up with new, innovative ways of making things, doing things and operating things. But Florida was clear. Even the fifty something guy flipping burgers is a member of the Creative Class if he has found a way to do so more efficiently or, to use the First commandment of industry, better, faster and cheaper. So what’s the point? As the new economy continues to emerge, it is everyone’s economy. This is true if you are 24 or 84. Recent changes are just a taste of what’s ahead and you can be a driver in this exciting new age. The global economy, and our economy in Ponca City, is moving forward, eliminating any and all inefficiencies. What we may think of as a stable part of our community, the economy may decide is yesterday’s news. Holding on to obsolete things that are not relevant to today’s economy may soothe or sense our sense of nostalgia, but the modern, hyper competitive global economy just doesn’t care. Change is not an option. Whether we’re a part of it or left behind is up to each and every person…and every community.

BUSINESS CARD WINNER! Please note: The Ponca City Area Chamber of Commerce office will be closed Wednesday, November 11 for Veterans’ Day, and for Thanksgiving, November 26 - 28.

Ten Reasons to Shop Ponca City First! 1. Shopping Ponca City creates jobs. Shops in Ponca City create local employment and self-employment.

2. Local businesses invest more in Ponca City. Local businesses are proportionally more generous in their support of local charities, schools, and community events.

3. Local businesses sell a wide range of great products at affordable prices.

Check out what our retailers have to offer!

4. Shopping local saves you money. If you add travel, fees to transfer larger items, and your time, the overall cost is often much higher than shopping locally.

5. Shopping local retains our communities. In order for our local businesses to stay open, they have to have customers.

6. Shopping local retains our distinctiveness. Local businesses respond more quickly to the needs of local customers, stocking products to meet the local population needs.

7. Shopping local saves the environment. Local shops often stock a high percentage of locally sourced goods which do not require long shipping journeys, helping to reduce our global footprint.

8. Local shops are for everyone. Most people can get to Ponca City businesses easily, especially important for the elderly, young adults with children, and people without transportation.

9. Ponca City stores value your repeat business. When a business’s reputation is at stake, customer care and the standard of service is high.

10. Shopping local saves services. Private and public sector services cluster around shops. As shops disappear so do hairdressers, banks, restaurants, etc.

So….Shop Smart, Shop Ponca First!
