RENEE VAN TRIER 1983 (NL) Graduated from St. Joost Breda in 2008 and the Sandberg Institute Amsterdam in 2010. Performed and exhibited (among other places) OCCII, Amsterdam - S.M.A.K, Gent, Belgium - Stedelijk Museum ‘s-Hertogenbosch – Paradiso, Amsterdam - OTIS College of Art and Design, Los Angeles Theatre Les Halles, Sierre - WORM, Rotterdam – CEAC Center Xiamen, China Grimm Museum, Berlin – Les Urbaines, Lausanne, Switzerland. As a musician she was part of the well-known duo Milligram Retreat. Next to this she composes musical pieces for theatre and dance shows. “Van Trier has won the first Harry Pennings Photo Prize in 2007 at Gallery Pennings, Eindhoven. Recently Van Trier was to be seen in the highly acclaimed documentary A Strange Love Affair With Ego by Ester Gould, showing another side of the artist that she is. Renée van Trier is a performance artist with a national as well as an international network, recently moving from the underground scene towards the more esthablished art institutes. The emphasis of her performances lies on the voice, soundscape, music and popular culture vs. authenticity and identity. She shows the conflict between the person and the adopted artificial identity. The survey concerns the authentic and artificial behaviour. In her work, she acts and reacts intuitively in the moment. Van Trier has always let herself be inspired by popular culture: the pop icons, the merchandise and all of the other commercial aspects. This is no longer the centre of het work, but it still resonates in the background. In her performances she peels off the various layers of popular culture (the culture industry) until only an empty shell is left. She looks for sincerity in this and the fearlessness to allow the silence to come forth, which can be frightening. We have to work hard to be present ourselves to the world, to put ourselves on display to society.
