President’s Message I

t is always a pleasure to write this welcome letter because it signifies that our summer season is just around the corner and our friends and neighbors will soon be returning to the lake. As you will observe in our newsletter, our many volunteers, including our board of directors, our milfoil committee and our events planners, have been busy preparing a calendar of events that addresses our lake management issues as well as a program that offers social, educational and recreational opportunities for all to enjoy. Let me offer just a few words regarding our primary mission, protecting and preserving Loon Lake. This year LLPDA, Inc. will be contracting with Aquatic Invasive Management, LLC. (AIM) to serve as our lake manager. They will be here for a period of six weeks and will begin hand harvesting milfoil in early June. AIM brings with them an excellent track record having performed this service on Lake George, the Upper Saranac, Schroon Lake, and Brant Lake. Additionally, our boat inspection program, designed to curb the introduction and spread of invasive species began on May 15th. The launch and inspection station will now be open daily from 7 AM to 7 PM. This is a major prevention program which has now been extended throughout the Adirondack Park. There is an expectation that all boats entering and leaving our lake will be clean, drained and dried helping us to protect our lake from the introduction of new aquatic invasives arriving from any other infested lakes. We will also continue to monitor the quality of our water through our water testing program taking place in July.

Our activities calendar is full of events for children and adults. Our NYS Boater Safety Course continues to be popular for children ages 11-17. Since there are space limitations, early sign ups are recommended. Our fishing derby, water carnival, golf tournament, family hike, boat parade, paddle day, summer dinner dance, all provide a wonderful opportunity for family and friends to join in our events that remain popular for our lake community. Attached you will find our 2015 membership form. Last year we hit a milestone by setting a record membership and we anticipate this to be a similar year. LLPDA, Inc. is our association serving our lake and our park district community. Please join us as a member for 2015. Feel free to contact me or any board member with comments, suggestions, and recommendations. Best wishes and have an enjoyable summer, Ed Griesmer

Loon Lake Boat Launch To Open May 15th The Town of Chester/Loon Lake Park District Boat Launch

and Inspection Center will be open May 15th-October 12th. The new hours of operation will be 7am-7pm. Boats will be inspected and washed, if necessary, to ensure that boats are free of invasives and therefore do not pose a threat to our lake. Boaters can minimize the inspection process by having their boats meet the clean, drained, and dried standard upon arrival at the launch. We will be participating in an Adirondack region wide-spread prevention program focused on keeping invasives from entering our Adirondack water bodies. Boaters in route to any lake within the Adirondack Park can have their boats washed and tagged at the Loon Lake facility without cost. Nick Bonavita, Lynn Douglas and Steve Smith will return, working as our boat inspection technicians and will welcome your cooperation and compliance with our inspection procedures.

SPRING / SUMMER 2015

Japanese Knotweed – Invasive Shoreline plant J

apanese Knotweed is a non-native plant invasive in the Adirondacks and has recently been found growing on various properties around Loon Lake. If you see this plant growing, please report the locations to Jan McCann at 518-494-5908. Jan works with APIPP and RIIPP in efforts to control the spread of this invasive plant. Japanese Knotweed is a fastgrowing, herbaceous perennial with jointed, hollow stems and alternate, leathery leaves that are broadly ovate. White flowers bloom in August, and dormant reddish stems are visible in winter. Its early spring emergence and dense growth enables it to take over large areas with roots that can extend through soils 60 feet or more. Knotweed is very difficult to control and it is recommended that a licensed applicator assist in removing it. Digging and pulling does not solve the problem.
