I’VE DISCOVERED A FRIENDLY, OPEN CITY THAT’S PLEASANTLY FLORENTINE IN THE SOFT AUTUMN LIGHT, TEEMING WITH LIVELY TERRACES DURING THE WARM SUMMER EVENINGS, AND DELICIOUSLY INVITING IN THE DEPTHS OF WINTER...

EDITO RIAL

scientists and students from around the world and executives of multinational companies under the spell of the city’s warm welcome and enviable quality of life... I’ve seen Gallo-Roman remains and magnificent Renaissance townhouses rubbing shoulders with the most innovative architectural styles; I’ve seen the future take its place alongside a rich heritage that is as vibrant and lively as ever... I’ve seen the industries of yesterday converted to high technology and the industries of tomorrow spring up in the city’s competitiveness clusters... I’ve tickled my taste buds at the countless restaurants and popular bouchons, participated in the Beaujolais Nouveau Day that washes away all differences, and discovered the hidden treasures that are the city’s Contemporary Art and Dance Biennials – proof, if it were needed, that here, each year, culture is everyone’s affair... I’ve spent marvelous days in Tête d’Or Park and the Cité Internationale, strolled for hours along the banks of the Rhône, spied wildlife such as beavers while crossing the Passerelle du Collège footbridge, and admired the Saône from the perfumed heights of the Jardin de la Rosière at the foot of Fourvière hill. Like many of the city’s inhabitants, I wasn’t born a "Lyonnais" – I became one.

And now it is my pleasure to welcome you to Lyon!

AN EVER-PRESENT PAST

A CITY IN MOTION

EQUILIBRIUM

CUTTING EDGE

Lyon was the capital of the Gauls during the Roman Empire, a flourishing center during the Renaissance and the reign of the Italian bankers, and adulated for centuries by all the courts of Europe for the excellence of its silks... And even today, the city still boasts Roman amphitheaters, Renaissance townhouses, its unique traboule alleyways and a historic and architectural legacy that is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

An international airport, two TGV high-speed train stations in the center of town, 200,000 m² of exhibition space at the Cité Internationale, Eurexpo and Halle Tony Garnier, some of France’s top universities, hosting researchers and students from around the world... Lyon is a dynamic city that is open to and turned towards the world.

When admiring Lyon from the top of Fourvière hill, one is struck by the city’s harmonious blend of past and present, its western hills and eastern plains, the lively Saône and the majestic Rhône, the dense city and the nearby countryside.

The High Environmental Quality (HQE®) buildings being built in the new districts of Lyon Part-Dieu and Lyon Confluence... The banks of the Rhône redeveloped to create public parks, and priority given to "sustainable transportation": the Vélo’v self-service bikehire scheme, and the tram and subway... Competitiveness clusters, research centers, new technologies... In Lyon, a city of tradition, modernity is everywhere.

Let your feet guide you.

Let yourself be carried away.

Let yourself be seduced.

Let yourself be transported.

AN ARCHITECT’S EXPERT EYE

FU SION

Jean-Yves Arrivetz Architect, designer and winner of the Lyon “Griffe d’Honneur” prize for 2009

Lyon is a place steeped in art history, and is now becoming increasingly open to modern, creative architecture. Designers, both here and elsewhere, continue to broaden the horizons of their imagination, with extraordinary passion and attention to detail. The city has changed. Design can be seen everywhere, on the streets and in public buildings, enhancing their appearance without impacting on their functionality and remaining true to their original form. An urban and architectural revolution is underway, and it is this revolution that marks the cultural undercurrent of Lyon. 23

In Lyon, both the past and the future are present From century to century, from one street and neighborhood to the next, an astonishing architectural patchwork has taken form, achieving a sustainable and harmonious urban equilibrium incorporating the latest styles: Tony Garnier’s futuristic skyscrapers of the 1930s, the Lyon Opera given a new lease of life by Jean Nouvel, and the new High Environmental Quality (HQE®) districts which give full expression to today’s most innovative architects. In Lyon, homes, businesses and leisure centers are to be found in every neighborhood.

LYON IS LESS THAN TWO HOURS FROM THE SKI RESORTS OF THE ALPS AND LESS THAN THREE HOURS FROM THE BEACHES OF THE MEDITERRANEAN, MAKING IT THE IDEAL LOCATION FOR TOURIST OUTINGS… or FAMILY WEEKENDS!

Though Lyon is a large city, nature is never far away: wooded hills, the shady banks of the Rhône dotted with green spaces, parks covering dozens of acres, and river islands are all intimately woven into the urban fabric. And for the purists looking for authenticity, the preserved countryside is only a short distance away: the Beaujolais hills and the Rhône Valley await visitors, with their magnificent landscapes and culinary specialties, not to mention the Alps, a thrilling region all year round!

SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT

FOLLOWING THE CURRENT... WITHOUT CARS

In Lyon, sustainable transport is no pipe dream. It was here that the concept of self-service bicycles was first tested and proven on a large scale. Five years after its creation, the Vélo’v bikehire scheme already has over 39,667 subscribers, 4,232 bikes and 343 stations. Combined with trains and bicycles, the city’s public transportation system – its subway, trams and trolleybuses – is a model of sustainable development. The system’s primary aim is to provide easy access to the parkand-ride facilities located on the outskirts of the city. As a result, Lyon is the only major urban area in France in where fewer than half of all trips into the city center are made by car.

Since the summer of 2007, the banks of the Rhône, between Gerland and Tête d’Or Park, have been returned to pedestrians, cyclists and inline-skaters. The 3 miles of playgrounds, footpaths and cycle paths have become one of Lyon’s most popular attractions. 25 acres entirely devoted to relaxing, strolling and getting away from it all... right in the heart of the city. Opt for a change of scenery and make new acquaintances and discoveries on the grassy expanses of the "Grande Prairie" or the stepped terraces of La Guillotière, or while enjoying a delicious meal on one of the many restaurantbarges. And very soon, the banks of the Saône will once again renew their intimate dialog with the city and its inhabitants...

IN ALTERNATE YEARS, LYON PLAYS HOST TO TWO WORLD-FAMOUS INTERNATIONAL BIENNIAL FESTIVALS: THE DANCE BIENNIAL, WHICH BRINGS TOGETHER THE LARGEST NUMBER OF DANCE COMPANIES OF ANY FESTIVAL AND THOUSANDS OF AMATEUR DANCERS FOR A COLORFUL PROCESSION THROUGH THE STREETS OF LYON; AND THE CONTEMPORARY ART BIENNIAL, SHOWCASING THE VERY LATEST THAT THE INTERNATIONAL ART WORLD HAS TO OFFER.

10

TURN THE CITY INTO A FESTIVAL!

vibra tions Life in Lyon is set to the rhythm of an events calendar overflowing with thrilling, fascinating events, season after season, year after year: age-old traditions adapted to contemporary tastes and new international gatherings, cultural and sporting events, internationale conferences and much more... In its streets, at the Cité International, at Eurexpo, at the Halle Tony Garnier and in the Gallo-Roman amphitheaters of Fourvière, the city of Lyon welcomes all talents and fosters creativity.

The Nuits Sonores electronic music festival is very much an event that is open to the public, without being demagogic or commercial, and which also offers some very specialized performances. It is organized at over 40 sites around town, and each year attracts some 40,000 people. This balance, along with a real desire to "inhabit" the city, ensures the festival’s convivial atmosphere and explains its continued success and originality. With the Nuits Sonores, Arty Farty – the organizer of this and many other festivals throughout the year, in Lyon and around the world – burnishes the city’s image by helping to export its home-grown talent. Lyon is now a European capital of electronic music and the digital arts. What is essential is that everyone involved locally, whatever their particular specialty or project, now understands that attractiveness isn’t something that just happensarge, it’s built with sincerity, openness and passion.

LYON IN THE SPOTLIGHT

MUSIC IN STOCK

SPORTING EXCELLENCE

The Fête des Lumières festival is a tradition exclusive to Lyon, with the 2010 edition attracting several million visitors over four days! Each year, for a few nights, the city’s monuments come to life under an explosion of colors, the sky becomes a stage, and renowned set designers pit their imagination against one another, while candles flicker on windowsills... A magical and entirely free festival you won’t want to miss!

The electronic music of the Nuits Sonores, the pop, rock and variety shows of the Nuits de Fourvière, the Baroque Music Festival... From classical music in unexpected and hip locations to more modern fare in storied, historic sites, all year round, Lyon loves to mix genres. There’s something for all ears!

THE "7th ART" TAKES CENTER STAGE Not surprisingly, the hometown of the Lumière brothers has its own temple of the "7th art": all year long, the Institut Lumière, located on the former premises of the first French film studio, offers a program rich in retrospectives and discoveries. In autumn 2010, Lyon hosted the second edition of the Greater Lyon Film Festival: Lumière 2010. More than 40,000 people took part in this event.

Of course, the city has Olympique Lyonnais, which is the pride of all Lyon – and not just soccer fans! But Lyon also boasts the ASVEL basketball team in Villeurbanne and the LOU Rugby club. Then there’s the Lyon Marathon, the Lyon Free VTT mountain-bike festival and the Charbonnières car rally...

Lyon has built its reputation on the great traditions of gastronomy, textile design and trade. Unlike many other urban areas, which have progressively given up their local expertise under the weight of globalization, Lyon has never stopped reinterpreting and improving its fundamental skills, ensuring that it stays ahead of the pack in terms of creation and innovation. The world has changed. Lyon’s strength is that it has managed to change with it.

IMPULSES LYON’S TEXTILE INDUSTRY PRODUCES THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SILKS IN THE WORLD. TODAY, IT IS AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE MOST TECHNOLOGICALLY ADVANCED FABRICS. LYON IS ALSO THE "CAPITAL OF GASTRONOMY", CULTIVATING ITS TRADITION FOR INNOVATION BY DEVELOPING NEW TASTES AND FLAVORS THAT WILL TITILLATE YOUR TASTE BUDS...

A SHOPPING MECCA In Lyon, shopping has become a genuine passion, with luxury chains, independent boutiques, designer shops, franchises, and top fashion and interior-design brands. Lyon is also a city well worth exploring for unique objects and one-of-a-kind creations made by skilled craftsmen and passionate artists.

DESTINATION: CREATION

A TASTE FOR INNOVATION

In the world of fashion and design, Lyon stands out on the European stage with specialized, reputable training programs and a new, dynamic generation of designers, including Nicolas Fafiotte and Nathalie Chaize (textiles), Garbis Devar (leatherwear), and Sismo Designer and Tous Les Trois (design). Each is a talent from a different background and each excels in his or her specialty, but all are united under the banner of Lyon’s creative industries, with an ambition to encourage the emergence of new ideas and enrich the creative experience.

Of course, Lyon still has its typical bouchon restaurants; indeed, the culinary tradition is firmly rooted in every neighborhood across the city! But there is also a host of other establishments where you can discover new ways of eating well, including reinvented French cuisine, dishes from the four corners of the world and molecular gastronomy. Naturally, Lyon’s great chefs – Bocuse, Blanc, Lacombe and Orsi – still fly the flag for French cuisine. The city also boasts many creative young spirits, such as Sébastien Bouillet, who has made quite a name for himself with his innovative pastries (macaroons), as well as many other talented, up-and-coming youngsters such as Le Bec, Viannay and Ezgulian... each one a future classic!

FROM THE SILVER SCREEN TO THE DIGITAL SCREEN As the birthplace of cinema, Lyon is famous for hosting numerous shoots and lending significant support to the entire visual arts industry. Indeed, this is attested to by the Imaginove competitiveness cluster, dedicated to the "moving image" sector covering cinema, audiovisuals, animation, interactivity and video games. A further sign of Lyon’s vitality in the domain of audiovisual creation was the decision to relocate the Cartoon Movie forum for the European production of long animated films from Berlin to Lyon in 2009.

A CITY AMONG CITIES

ONLYLYON: LYON’S INTERNATIONAL BRAND

LYON, A CITY OF INFLUENCES

Lyon’s active role in the most important urban networks, both in Europe (EuroCities) and around the world (United Cities and Local Governments, or UCLG) , contributes to its international influence, particularly in political and cultural terms. Lyon seeks to make solidarity one of the driving forces behind its policies. To this end, Greater Lyon has moved from bilateral twinning to multilateral public/private partnerships and is particularly committed to providing training for people in developing countries.

The ONLYLYON brand was created in 2007. It forms the central pivot of the Lyon urban area’s regional communication and marketing policy, throughout Europe and beyond. This brand covers all the key institutional and economic players in Lyon, uniting them under a single form of governance. For the last four years, the ONLYLYON program has been developing strategic actions and policies to enhance Lyon’s attractiveness as an economic center and to improve its competitiveness on an international scale. The program is based on five key principles: a communication plan (poster campaigns, digital communication, etc.), press relations, international events, the development and management of a network of Ambassadors and local actions to encourage Lyon’s residents to adopt the brand.

In addition to the towns and villages that make up Greater Lyon, the communities of Tarare, Villefranche-sur-Saône, Vienne, BourgoinJallieu, Lyon-Saint Exupéry International Airport, Saint-Étienne, Porte de l’Isère and Pays Viennois all contribute to the dynamism and attraction of the urban area.
