December 2014

A Message from BURA’s President ear BURA members, On Wednesday mid-morning, November 19, I took someone heading home for the holidays to Pearson Airport. On the way there, between Vineland and Grimsby, I counted five traffic accidents: a jack knife, pile up, rear ender, etc. It was very cautious going until Casablanca Blvd. From there the road was dry and it was normal driving to the airport. I was glad I was not driving; I was thankful the pileups were on the opposite side of the QEW and that we arrived at the airport in good time for an international flight.

D

It was a different story for the return trip: snow the entire route with very, very cautious driving. A normally 80 minute drive took three hours!! But I saw only one accident. Perhaps by the afternoon people had processed the reality---it is winter and we need to drive extra carefully. Next morning (Thursday, November 20), I heard on the news that there were 150 accidents on the highways. Later a friend came by for lunch. She said she went to get her snow tires installed before going to work at Brock that morning and was told, “Lady, there are 120 people ahead of you. If you want it done right away you have to be here at 6 a.m.!” Winter is here! And once again, the snow caught us unprepared. If it comes in October, we are not ready; if it comes in November, we are not ready; if it comes in December we are not ready. Yet we know it is coming---a sure thing---every year. On such a day as Wednesday was, do you get up in the morning, stretch, and think, “Am I glad

I am not going to work this morning?” Stretch again and think, “Ah! The leisure of retirement!” With the arrival of winter we know that the calendar year is over and another begins. Among all our reminiscences of the year we can look back at BURA’s events of the fall term and think, “Yes, I enjoyed the programs and the venues and the lunches, and best of all, the fellowship.” We worked in the same institution for many years and some of us knew others by name only and some not at all, so the name tags really help. Perhaps now at BURA we can get to know one another more than by name, and deepen the fellowship. About this time we begin looking ahead to next year and anticipate the rhythm of the year. If you have recently retired, then you have a rhythm change to contemplate. It is a huge change from the imposed work routine (which you have wanted to escape---maybe) to creating your own routines; you have time to do so and to adjust to the new rhythm. Please include BURA meetings in your new schedule. If you have been retired for awhile and you have already established new routines, new rituals, and rhythms, be sure to add BURA’s monthly meetings. Mark the dates and times and venues on your Here is a brief calendar. overview of what is coming January to After the quiet or June 2015. noisy, restrained or animated, individual BURA Executive Notes, December 2014

or group, slower or faster paced celebrations of December, be they Christian (Christmas) or Jewish (Hanukkah), or Buddhist (Bodhi Day) or Muslim (Id Ul Fitr, Id Ul Adah, Id Ul Hajra), we come together in our BURA community in January to recognize Robbie Burns Day with a jolly time of Scottish dancing. We will see and feel and experience the rhythms of Scotland. What a fun way to begin the New Year! At this time of writing, the BUFS film scheduled for February is unknown so we cannot give you a preview, but as in past years, it is sure to provoke thought and conversation. In March, Professor Schmidt who introduced us last year to the marvel of the Mars Rover, will bring us an update. In April and again in May we will indulge the artist in us. In April we will be privileged to see some of our colleagues’ artistic creations. Some of us who think we have no musical or other artistic talent may be challenged to rethink that self assessment. In May we will be invited to see one of our past Prime Ministers through the eyes of a

photographer’s lens. In June, we close our year with our Annual General Meeting. There is usually plenty of time for catch-up talk: “How is it going?” . . . “What’s on for summer?” . . . “So glad to see you.” . . . “Haven’t seen you for awhile.” It is a good opportunity to remind us, in person, that you are still with us, as well as a convenient time to pay your membership dues. I hope the more detailed descriptions that follow (The Events Schedule for 2015) will capture your interest and motivate you to come out for a fun time of sharing and learning enhanced by good food and enduring fellowship. On behalf of the Executive of BURA, I thank you for your presence and participation in the events of 2014. May the New Year hold many joys for you: good health, close friends, happy family, peace, and contentment. Sincerely Sybil Wilson

TUESDAY, JANUARY 20, 2015 Lunch and Entertainment: Scottish Country Dancing t’s time to celebrate! No, not the New Year, although that would be reason enough for BURA members to get together. It’s time to toast all things Scottish—the yes side, the no side, and the side (that’s everyone) that looks forward to Burns Night in honour of Robbie Burns, born January 25, 1759.

I

Such a celebration would not be complete without Scottish Country Dancing, the social dancing of Scotland. Dances that were first published in 1750 are still part of the repertoire. New ones are constantly added. The lively jigs and reels set the toes tapping; the haunting airs and strathspeys---unique to Scottish music---bring grace and elegance to the dance floor. Ten dancers will perform for BURA. They are members of the St. Catharines Branch of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society—locals who get together every week for dancing and fellowship. Performances consist of regular dances modified to last 128 bars or less, using lively music that the audience may find familiar. (Audience participation is encouraged!) 11:45, for noon Royal Henley Ballroom, Holiday Inn (Parkway), 327 Ontario Street, St. Catharines Cost: $25 Coordinators: Steve Hartman, Harold Leece Time: Venue:

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 11 Dinner and BUFS Comedy-Drama Film Presentation: My Old Lady hat a great way to warm up in February—meeting friends for dinner and a movie. And what a movie it is—the comedy-drama “My Old Lady” starring three exceptional actors: Maggie Smith, Kevin Kline, and Kristen Scott-Thomas. (See the review that follows.) Dinner will be at Johnny Rocco’s. Remember last time we were there? It was a bit noisy. Not this time; BURA will have an entire, closed room for our party. When you hear about this event from the Telephone Committee, or Jim Lennard on email, you will be asked if you want chicken parmigiana or eggplant parmigiana. There also will be salad, dessert, and tea or coffee to complete the meal. Yummy!

W

Oh, as your bonus, a representative from BUFS will introduce the film. Excerpt from a Review of My Old Lady (Glen Kenny, September 10, 2014) The movie begins with Kline’s character, a put-upon aging American named Mathias . . . coming into Paris full of hope and excitement: his late father, while denying his considerable fortune to his son, has willed him an apartment in Paris. Heretofore penniless and with no prospects—the guy’s got a lot of problems—his scheme to sell the apartment for a tidy sum and slough off for the rest of his days hits a snag right away: there’s an old woman living in the place, and she has no intention of leaving. Indeed, she is not even required to leave. That’s where the peculiarity in French real estate comes in. The apartment, which could fetch millions of Euros for Mathias, is a “viager.” The old woman, Mathilde (Smith), an Englishwoman long based in France, was the apartment’s prior owner; the new “owner” can buy the place for a song, pay the prior owner a monthly fee, and inherit the place free and clear once the inhabitant dies. The desperate Mathias immediately starts calculating the likely date of Mathilde’s death, while Mathilde snootily looks down her nose at failure-in-life Mathias. “My Old Lady” is pretty compelling viewing, mostly thanks to Kline, who gives a career-high performance here . . . Smith has the more difficult role: her character’s back story should have yielded a more hateful figure, but Mathilde can’t be hateful, or the whole mechanism would fall apart . . . People who complain about the absence of genuine adult drama from cinema screens have an opportunity to put their monies where their mouths are here. Time and Venue:

THURSDAY, MARCH 12 Lunch and Presentation by Volcanologist and Igneous Petrologist, Mariek Schmidt Mars Rover: an Update ariek Schmidt. You’ve seen that name before. Right here in the Program Notes for BURA in early 2013. And if you were lucky, you heard her give an outstanding presentation to our membership. (EVERYONE agreed!) Since then, Dr. Schmidt has been promoted to the rank of Associate Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at Brock. While currently on maternity leave, she continues to be part of the international team directing NASA’s latest Mars mission with the rover vehicle, “Curiosity.” A major part of Curiosity’s charge has been to obtain clues about Mars’ past climate, including the possibility that life may have developed when the climate was more favourable. So, what has been learned recently, and what are the prospects for further investigation? Dr. Mariek will let us know.
