President’s Christmas Message My fellow BAIPHIL Directors, Officers and members, Christmas is my favourite time of the year and I am sure, this is also true for most, if not for everyone else here in this gathering. Christmas is not only the season of magic, love, and joy but also of people being busy, stressed out, harassed and guilty of overspending! But no one is complaining!
Do you often wonder why despite the above, we still look forward to this season with great anticipation and enthusiasm? Let me tell you why! Christmas is …
IRENE DL. ARROYO BAIPHIL President FY 2017-2018
1. A time of sharing and gift giving! There is always excitement and glee in the eyes of both the young and old in opening their Christmas presents. Gifts are the physical representations of love we would like to express and share to friends and kins. 2. A time for greetings and visiting! Friends and relatives, old acquaintances, near or far, business colleagues gather and / or greet each other with sincere wishes for God’s blessings and good tidings. It is the time to appreciate ones loved we often take for granted. 3. A time for music and singing! The air is filled with festive Christmas carols and the mood surely brings lightness to our hearts and also to our feet to dance with the quick beat. 4. A time for remembering the good old days, memories of carefree childhood days, days of playful fun, youthful adventures, field trips, soirees, crushes and puppy loves. Really it is a time for reminiscing wonderful memories. 5. A time for family bonding and celebration. Sacred are Christmas Days and New Year’s eve where we all gather and reunite in one table to partake of the good food that our mothers have lovingly prepared, together with the usual noche Buena staples of ham, cheese and wine! 6. A time for rushing to buy gifts, clean the house, decorate the home, prepare food, buy party dresses, attend happy occasions, and of course, wrap up job targets for the year, etc. Continued on Page 2
President’s Christmas Message (continuation) 7. But it is also a time for peace and solitude. Time to slow down, enjoy the simple things, reflect inside on what has transpired during the past year, good or bad; to quiet ourselves and hear the whisper of nature and the voice of our conscience; enjoy the smell of the flowers in our garden and breath fresh mountain air. A time to take in the serene moments spent with our loved ones. 8. A time for Faith, Hope and Love; time to reflect on the three great virtues that make up our Christian lives. We light candles as a sign of prayer for forgiveness and promise of a better self. 9. Most of all, Christmas is the time to give thanks for all the blessings for God is still with us and working daily miracles in our lives! Now, we ask ourselves, “Do we really need to crunch all of these in only one season during the year?” If they feel good, do good, and make us good, what is keeping us from doing them every time, every day, all the time! The glory and beauty of this wonderful season is something we can share together as a BAIPHIL family. May the sparkle of Christmas shine on you and your loved ones and may you feel the happiness not only this season but year round!

ASEAN Banking Council Meeting
THE 47TH ASEAN BANKING COUNCIL MEETING ATTENDANCE OF PDIC VP Irene DL. Arroyo, as President of the Bankers Institute of the Philippines (BAIPHIL), held on November 23-24, 2017 in Da Nang City, Vietnam The 47th ASEAN Banking Council Meeting, hosted by the Vietnam Banks Association (VNBA), was attended by some 200 delegates consisting of senior banking executives and officials from banking academies from the 10 member countries of ASEAN as well as subject matter experts from the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
ASEAN Secretary General Le Luong delivered the keynote address which traced the historical transformative success of ASEAN since 50 years ago and how it has grown to be an economic entity capable of forging a strong path to expand its potential as a significant and influential global player. With a current combined Gross Domestic Product ( GDP) of US$2.6 trillion, and a combined population of 640 million people, accounting for 7% of global trade in 2016, ASEAN now ranks as the world’s 6th largest economy.
Part of Mr. Luong’s speech was the ASEAN Economic Cooperation (AEC) Blueprint 2025, successor of the AEC 2015, which contained the ASEAN Strategic Action Plan 2016-2025 in terms of the three key pillars, as follows: 1. Financial integration – guided by the ASEAN Banking Integration Framework (ABIF); 2. Financial inclusion – guidelines contained in the ASEAN Financial Inclusion Framework; and 3. Financial stability He underscored that the key enabler for all of the above are the initiatives in the area of digital financial inclusion, i.e., FinTech and digitalization. The association is developing the Guidance Notes on Digital Financial Services that will be used as a reference for ASEAN Member states to develop or enhance their digital financial ecosystem at the national level. The Guidance Notes are deemed essential aid in crafting regulatory measures for digital financial services in response to the emergence of financial innovation and digitalization in the ASEAN financial milieu. ASEAN Banking Council Meeting (continuation) Citing the ASEAN’s various achievements in the past, it lends no doubt that the ASEAN is resolute and committed to pursue deeper economic regional cooperation where financial integration has been the key factor in supporting the transformation process. Another speaker, Madame Nguyen Thi Hong, Deputy Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam exhorted the ASEAN banks to continue to consolidate their resolve to further enhance financial integration and forge effective linkages with the private sector in terms of trade, investment and people. The banks’ role in as “the bridge connecting the economies for enhancing sustainable growth and broadening financial inclusion across all sectors of the economy through the use of FinTech” cannot be overemphasized. The third speaker was the Chairman of VNBA and CEO of the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV) Mr. Phan Duc who also stressed the need for the member states to work together to achieve the common objectives of the ASEAN Bankers Association. According to him, fostering cooperation, exchanging of experiences, and addressing regional banking issues during this year’s Council meeting will bring good opportunities to connect in the field of banking and finance. As Chairman of the ASEAN Bankers Association (ABA), Mr. Farid Rahman of the Indonesian Banks Association (PERBANAS) noted the headways in terms of financial development, anchored on the principles of inclusiveness, transparency and reciprocity for all the SEAN people. The ABIF, agreement between Malaysia and the Philippines on the matter of Qualified ASEAN Banks (QAB) has recently been signed. Another segment of the Council Meeting dealt on the presentation on the global macroeconomic and banking sector outlook in the Asia Pacific by Mr. Gene Fang of Moody’s who sees “a broadening emerging markets recovery and stable growth in advanced economies through 2019. Key credit factors for ASAN Banking systems are likewise generally stable while it was noted that the outlook for the Vietnam banking environment is positive.
The ASEAN Banking Council meets every year and regular reports from its three permanent committees namely, the Cooperation in Finance, Investment and Trade (COFIT), the ASEAN Inter-Regional Relations (IRR), and Banking Education Committee are received. The undersigned as BAIPHIL President attended the Banking Education Committee which is chaired by the Bankers Association of the Philippines (BAP) represented by the BAP Chairman on Bank Education, Mr. Roberto C. Banares (President and CEO of the Bank of Commerce). The committee agreed to create a clearing house of the ideas to exchange and share training/certification programmes and to inform each other one’s training requirements. Likewise, sharing of publications and emerging trends in the industry are among the items agreed upon. The ABA Chairmanship for 2018 was handed over to the Lao Bankers Association (LBA) represented by Mr. Phroukhong Chanthachack. The 2018 48th ABA Council Meeting will be held in Brunei Darussalam and to be hosted by the Brunei Association of Banks (BAB).

BAIPHIL Street Dance Challenge Season 2 Francisco Santiago Hall, BDO Corporate Center, Makati City 26 October 2017
BAIPHIL STREET DANCE CHALLENGE SEASON 2, A BIG SUCCESS By Teresita S. Galvadores The success and warm acceptance of the maiden launch of the BAIPHIL Street Dance Challenge one year ago, on October 27, 2016, drove an intensified enthusiasm from among the BAIPHIL leaders to showcase again this year, the talents of the banking community in street dancing. October 26, 2017, in a display of strength, agility, balance, creativity and rhythm, put together a dramatic connection of what unfolded inside the Francisco Santiago Hall, BDO Corporate Center, Makati in what was dubbed as the BAIPHIL STREET DANCE CHALLENGE SEASON 2. Spearheaded by the Special Projects Committee under the able leaderships of Marilen Ruiz and Liza Ortiz, Chairperson and Director –in-Charge respectively of the Special Projects Committee, funds generated from this event aim to augment the support for the Financial Education Program of the Institution.
From the 11 competing member bank teams, 5 were part of the first run while 6 new entries were registered for this year. The following were the contestants, in the order of their presentation sequence: UNITED COCONUT PLANTERS BANK* BANGKO SENTRAL NG PILIPINAS METROPOLITAN BANK & TRUST CO.* PHILIPPINE SAVINGS BANK* UCPB SAVINGS BANK* LAND BANK OF THE PHILIPPINES
EAST WEST BANKING CORP. PNB SAVINGS BANK* CITIBANK, N.A.* BANK OF THE PHILIPPINE ISLANDS UNION BANK OF THE PHILIPPINES
*New entries for season 2 Criteria for judging included the artistic component with 60% weight covering choreography, creativity, audience impact, stage presence, costume and props. The technical component with 40% weight covered the technique, execution, timing and musicality. All teams came ready. Costumes were usually in the shade of black, blue and brown in body fitting and tight stretchable outfits to afford them comfort and mobility in the performance. Hand, body and foot work were carefully and skilfully executed by the participants, with blocking and various steps in perfect cadence toward giving justice to the rhythm and musicality. Support from each competing bank was outpouring with high ranking officers sighted at the audience. Crowd support for the contestants, was almost deafening, a material factor in the audience impact criterion. The crowd was drawn to going with the beat and music in bodily movement, as each one onstage executed the action con gusto. One heard questions like, are these dancers really bank employees? Are they sure dancing is only a second career for them? Or simply the passion of dancing keeping banking as the primary career? So talented indeed! BAIPHIL is truly honored to have the contest assessed and judged by young professionals and performers who are authorities in the field of street dancing. Ms. Meggie Manago, Ms. Chinky Asilo a nd Mr. Von Ace Asilo all came from the Continued on Page 8

UP STREETDANCE CLUB, in their capacities as Alumni, Coach, Artistic Director, having brought the country fame and honor in their representations to international contest on street dance. Equally cannot be outdone in execution and glamour was the dance number led by BAIPHIL leaders Tess Andres and Tess Dean together with the China Bank Savings Dance team. Their presentation brought the house down. And who says street dancing is only for the young ones? The three judges also gave a very highly stretching and active dance piece which they executed with so much ease. Surely, this is always part of their routine and expertise thus the very fine work execution. Those dances happened in between the flow of the program and while waiting for the final tabulation of the scores. It must have been a tough decision for the judges to get the top 3 from among the 11 contenders as the teams really did their best, to fit in to all precincts of judging. For an ordinary banker regardless of the corporate rank and position, choosing the winners to the street dancing contest is even much more difficult to do. The movements were simply fast and done with skills and passion. But wait! The evening would not be complete without closing the event and closing the event meant the winners had to be chosen! AND CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WINNERS:
Two years in a row, BPI garnered the top award as Champion with a total score of 90.67%.
