Prior to the event, the students were tasked with designing and building a bridge that would meet weight and dimension rules, and be aesthetically pleasing, all while sustaining the heaviest load. The event’s main objective, however, was to expose the students to critical thinking, problem solving, and group work, while giving them a chance to visit a college campus, and learn about Civil Engineering. Other activities included a poster competition, technical report, presentations, an impromptu competition, and campus tours. Prizes were awarded in each competition and also on the overall winners for those with the best results on all the events. The overall winners received the coveted bragging rights and a $1,000 prize, trophies, and have since been recognized by the Los Angeles Unified School District Board.

SSJB YMF President’s Message

My name is Amanda Bucio and I am the current SSJB YMF president. I graduated from the University of California, Berkeley and I currently work for Kennedy/Jenks Consultants in Bakersfield, CA. I have been a member of ASCE since my college years at Cal and I have continued to be involved with ASCE as an active SSJB YMF board member since the beginning of group two and half years ago.

Amanda Bucio SSJB-YMF President

SSJB is halfway through its third year as a YMF group. It has been a challenging two and half years but it has been a rewarding experience. As president my goal was to continue to grow as a group and continue to build on the successes that we have had. One of our events that always attract members is the tours that YMF organizes of local sites and construction projects, like the Isabella Dam or the State Route 178 and Fairfax Road Interchange Project. SSJB YMF group has also continued to be involved with and volunteer at local community events such as Engineer’s Day at the Mall during Engineer’s Week, judging at the Kern County Science Fair, and speaking at local middle schools and high schools. Recently YMF hosted a mixer at a local pizzeria so that engineering students of the Engineer’s Club at Bakersfield College could meet local young engineers and ask questions. The event was a success and a lot of fun. YMF is committed to continue to support our local engineering students by organizing more events with them. Slowly but surely SSJB YMF has established its presence in the engineering community of Bakersfield. In the last two and a half years SSJB YMF has laid out a strong foundation for our group to continue to grow and succeed. The SSJB YMF group would not have been possible with out the hard work and dedication of our board members and past presidents. I am looking forward to the rest of another great year.

2009 Spring Issue

Metropolitan Los Angeles YMF President’s Message Summer is just around the corner and that means that a lot of graduating students will be joining the workforce and changing their ASCE membership status from Student Member to Associate Member–hopefully. A large majority of active ASCE student members have been enjoying many of the ASCE benefits available at a significantly reduced membership cost. Student’s affiliation with ASCE doesn’t have to end after graduation; it can mark the start of their professional affiliation. Now more than ever is important to keep a connection with professional organizations such as ASCE. Amidst the current tough economy and high level of white-collar unemployment, ASCE can boost your marketability with professional development and provide opportunities to make career connections. Now, if you’re graduating, it is important that you change your membership status from student to associate member and get involve with your local Younger Member Group or Branch. Volunteer in any of the community service, K-12 outreach, infrastructure policy awareness, government relations, or social activities because you will develop professional networks when you participate. The annual membership dues for recent recipients of a Civil Engineering degree is only $38 for the first year, then it will increase gradually for the next four years until it reaches the full dues price of $154. It is important that you continue as an ASCE member even if you have not found a job because it will keep you close to professionals and job opportunities in your field. Additionally, it will expand your network, build leadership skills, career connections, and provide access to professional development tools among other benefits.

Marlon Calderon, P.E MLAB YMF President

If you have new grads in your office encourage them to change their membership status and volunteer in ASCE activities. The benefits in volunteering in a professional organization can expand their soft skills and career connections which in turn can benefit them professionally and personally.

Orange County YMF President’s Message As summer approaches, OC-YMF has reflected back on our progress so far this year. We have much more to accomplish in the midst of a challenging year filled with economic obstacles. Nevertheless, our efforts through Community Service have continued to prosper. YMF (Tori Yokoyama) and Engineers Without Borders (EWB) will be hosting a Charity Golf Tournament at Eagle Glen Golf Course in Corona on June 5th. A portion of the proceeds will supplement funds provided by the Rotary Clubs of San Juan Capistrano and Yorba Linda to construct a home for a deserving family in Mexico through Corazon on June 6th in Tecate, Mexico. Locally, YMF and EWB volunteers, led by Ben Stanphill and Bill De Jong also participated in Santa Ana’s Restoration Day, where trees were planted and litter was removed in Santiago Park. As the end to the school year approaches, it is important to continue to capture the enthusiasm of students. Chao Yang and Edelyne Miguel are actively pursuing new contacts for school visitations for the 2009-2010 school year. Their K-12 Outreach Committee will also be looking to obtain valuable resources from ASCE to provide opportunities to expand the exposure of civil engineering to youths and promote our profession to the local community. All three universities (CSUF, CSULB, and UCI) were well represented at this year’s Pacific Southwest Regional Conference in Hawaii. Our Student Activities Coordinator, (Continued on page 4)

Marie Trinh was on hand to support all our local students in obtaining some invaluable experience in all of the conference’s concrete canoe, steel bridge, and other technical competitions. Recently, our Programs Committee has also taken steps to continue on our next Speaker Series entitled “LEED 3.0” which is set for late June. In addition, a Technical Tour, coordinated by Brandon Park will be held at John Wayne Airport in late May to see first-hand the construction of a new terminal being added to the existing terminal facilities. Our social events continue to bring the YMF community together. Andrew Pham is helping in coordinating a Joint YMF Camping/Whitewater Rafting Trip the last weekend of May, a Social Mixer/General Meeting at Ra Sushi in June, and our Annual OC-YMF Beach Day in Huntington Beach in July. Our annual 3x3 Basketball Tournament was also a success this year as eight teams from around OC battled it out at Heritage Park on April 4th in Tustin. Special thanks to all the participants and Tyler Whaley for organizing the event. We hope to see all the participants again and more next year!

Community Outreach Events MESA Prelims By: Edith Flores Thanks to all the Younger Members of ASCE who volunteered to be judges for the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement ( MESA ) Schools Program held at CSULA on March 7, 2009 . It was a very exciting and successful MESA Prelims, with the support of over 70 volunteers. Over 25 different competitions were conducted and all had 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place overall medal winners. All the competition winners from MESA prelims will now go on to compete at the LA Metro Regional MESA Day. I am honored to say our members always come through for our community service events. It is a great way to give back to our communities and makes our members better human beings. Thanks again for all your efforts! The students really enjoyed your company.

Earthquakes and Peanut Butter!!! By: Diana Turlik Metropolitan Los Angeles Branch YMFers, came out Friday afternoon, March 20th, to Will Rogers Elementary school to promote the importance of the civil engineering profession. YMF delivered a brief presentation on earthquakes to a crowd of eighty 4th grade students. Following the presentation on earthquakes, students were eager to be engineers for the rest of the day and design marshmallow and peanut butter earthquake safe structures. Volunteers broke the students into groups to build structures using marshmallows and peanut butter. After thirty minutes of trying to build the tallest, strongest, and most “livable” structure, students presented their structures and volunteers shook each building simulating an earthquake. The students found that the strongest structure was marshmallows and marshmallow paste (an alternative used due to peanut allergies), since it was designed at a manageable height and the marshmallow paste had a strong bond. In the end, there was peanut butter and marshmallow paste everywhere and YMFers continually asked the students not to eat their structures!

SB/R YMF CPP Student Chapter Scholarship & Sponsorship By: Edwin Quinonez This year the San Bernardino and Riverside Counties YMF offered a $500 scholarship to Cal Poly Pomona students majoring in civil engineering. Students were required to complete a short essay describing their most significant contribution to ASCE, their future career goals, and explain why they would be the deserving candidate. After carefully reviewing 14 applications the YMF Board of Directors Hilal Elhaddad, CPP Pract. Adv.; Danielle decided to award the scholarship to DanLibring, CPP Student; Julianna Gonzalez, CPP ielle Libring. Ms. Libring is an active memPract. Adv; ber of ASCE and is currently involved with the Concrete Canoe team as the Head of Logistics. Her duties have been to manage the team’s budget and to lead a fundraising campaign which brought in over $10,000 towards the 2009 Pacific Southwest Regional Conference (PWSRC), which will be held in Honolulu, Hawaii. Official awarding of the scholarship took place on March 10th during a student chapter meeting. At the same time, on behalf of the Forum, we presented the student chapter a check in the amount of $500 to help subsidize their cost towards PWSRC. This conference provides students the opportunity to work on various engineering projects and learn the soft skills that are necessary to succeed in the profession. Community Outreach Events cont. Carpinteria High School Career Fair By: Autumn Smith & Adam Hendel On March 26, 2009, Santa Barbara/Ventura YMF hosted a booth at the Carpinteria High School’s Career Day. It was a very diverse career fair with professionals from all business sectors including engineering, finance, dentistry, construction, military, and cosmetology. Our ASCE booth included a visual display board with plans and photos from construction, geotechnical, structural, transportation, and water resources projects completed in the City of Santa Barbara. We also distributed several engineering facts and experiment handouts, reviewed building marvel books, and gave away “cool” souvenirs from ASCE Headquarters. The students were amazed with the importance of civil engineering infrastructure in their daily lives. We were greeted with many eager young minds wanting us to help them figure out their career path and help them fill out their assignment sheets. We were able to share with them the educational steps required to become a civil engineer and the possible jobs they could have once they finished college. We grabbed their attention with stories about designing sewer mains and managing construction of city buildings. There were some students who were determined they were going to be some type of engineer; while others were keeping their options open. We also had students who just wanted to know what a civil engineer does everyday and the frequently asked question was “do you like your job?” Some may or may not have decided to become a civil engineer, although, I think our enthusiasm for our profession changed a few minds. Overall, we were able to share our knowledge and enthusiasm of what we do every day with the next generation of students.

Middle School Science Bowl!!!! By: Jane Tran and Diana Turlik Metropolitan Los Angeles Branch YMFers joined Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) Saturday, February 7th for an annual Middle School Science Bowl Competition. The competition is apart of a national competition hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. YMFers volunteered as judges and scorekeepers for the regional matches that took place at California State University Los Angeles, College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology. Students were asked rigorous questions, covering math, physical, chemical and biological sciences. The U.S. Department of Energy launched the first National Science Bowl competition in 1991 for high school students to encourage students to excel in science and math and pursue careers in those fields. In 2002, the Department of Energy introduced the National Science Bowl's competition for middle school students and now over 4,000 middle school students participate in the competitions. The National Science Bowl is the only science competition in the United States sponsored by a federal agency.

Green High School Workshop By: Cody Briggs and Diana Turlik Los Angeles Branch YMFers, hosted a two day workshop for high school students on sustainability and green building. The thirty high school students at LA Trade Tech started day one of the green workshop by watching a video on green building and discussing the LEED Rating System. The students were presented three case studies; Caltrans Building, LEED Silver rating, Santa Monica Public Main Library, LEED Gold rating, and the Palazzo Hotel in Las Vegas, LEED Silver rating. Students were especially enthusiastic about the Caltrans building located in their own community. Students applied the green knowledge acquired from day one of the workshop to design and develop green structures on the second day of the workshop. Students were divided into groups and provided with recycled materials; cardboard, plastic bottles, styrofoam, boxes, recycled construction paper, etc., to develop structures with green elements. Students built apartment complexes, houses, offices buildings and retail spaces with green roofs, storm water management systems, photovoltaic cells, pervious paving and eco-friendly materials. It was clear the students were able to apply their green knowledge to their designs. Hopefully we will see some of the green high school students as co-workers in the future.

Mesa Club Fundraiser Social By: Alejandro Moreno On March 20, 2009 MLAB YMF fundraised in support of Roosevelt High School’s Mathematic Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) Club. The MESA Club was seeking donations to help build a 16 ft. solar powered boat for a competition. MLAB YMF Community Service Chairs Edith Flores and Alex Moreno believed this was a great cause to support. Their plan of action was to setup a “fundraiser-social” event where a professional dance instructor would teach a salsa class. The salsa class would be followed by a social hour where participants would be able to practice their new dance steps. The event was a success. More than twenty members and friends attended and $220 was raised. MLAB YMF appreciates all the support from the participants for this worthy cause. The overall feedback was that everyone had a great time and they were wondering when the next “fundraiser- social” would be. After the event, all the participants went out dancing for more fun.

Washington, D.C. Leadership Training By: Jeannette Lindemann

More than 160 ASCE members participated in the Leadership training in government relations program in Washington, D.C. on March 25-26. Every spring, ASCE holds the Government Relations Leadership Training program in Washington, D.C., an intensive two-day program that provides participants with an inside look at the political process. Beginning with briefings on the latest civil engineering issues pending in Congress, participants also visit with their Representatives and Senators in Capitol Hill to educate and lobby them on the issues. Anyone interested in walking the hall of Capitol Hill and learning first hand how policy is crafted would benefit from this program. During the visit the group shared the message of infrastructure renewal as highlighted by ASCE’s 2009 Report Card for America’s Infrastructure with more than 200 members of Congress. For more information on how you can become involved in the Government Relations program go to www.asce.or/govrel/16.cfm

SB/RC YMF– PE Booth and Happy Hour By: Edwin Quinonez

On Saturday, April 25th, the San Bernardino and Riverside Counties YMF held its bi-annual PE Booth and Happy Hour Event. The booth was held at the Pomona Fairplex during the lunch break between the Seismic and Surveying exams. The PE Booth has become a great way to promote ASCE, to provide test-takers with support and advice, and most of all, to recruit new members. The Happy Hour was hosted at Acapulco Restaurant in Diamond Bar and it turned out to be an excellent crowd. Many of those who attended were ready to unwind from the challenging EIT and PE exams, and others, current ASCE members from the local YMFs, came out to show their support. Overall, it was relaxing night, good food and drinks, and great company.

Seven Oaks Dam Tour By: Edwin Quinonez, P.E.

On Friday, March 20th, members of the San Bernardino and Riverside Counties YMF were guided on a tour of Seven Oaks Dam, one of the largest earth filled dams in the nation. The dam was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to provide flood protection to San Bernardino, Riverside, and Orange Counties. The tour began with a short video on the construction of dam which provided a good understanding of its functionality and the magnitude of the project. After the video we rode a van along the embankment to the intake tower that stands 200 ft above the Santa Ana River bottom. The highest water level recorded to this date occurred during the storm events early in 2005. The water pond reached an elevation 2392.4’ translating to approximately 292.4’ above the river bottom. Next on the tour were the control room, the outlet channel and the plunge pool. The control room is used to monitor pond elevations and to control the outlet gates. The outlet channel is mainly used during large storm events and consists of an 18’ wide by 14’ high rectangular section with several baffles at the downstream end to dissipate the energy of the outflow. Plunge Pool and Outlet Channel There is also a 36” diameter used to convey low flows onto the plunge pool, which serves as an additional energy dissipation facility. If you were unable to attend the tour, not to

Social Events Paintball Event with Cal Poly Pomona By: Julianna Gonzalez

Ready, Aim, Fire! On Saturday, March 7th, the San Bernardino/Riverside YMF hosted a Paintball event at SC Village in Corona and invited the Cal Poly Pomona ASCE student chapter. Bright and early, players began calibrating their markers, filling their pouches with paintballs and preparing for a day at war. As the first round of games began, all 25 of us were ready for action. From the trenches in Kuwait, the mounds in Iraq and the Helicopter in Bosnia, guns were firing and bruises were forming. Overall, the event was a great success, especially after receiving great feedback from both students and the professionals. Case of paint $25, registration fee $20, Marker rental $11, shooting friends and co-workers PRICELESS.

Four YMF Groups Snowboard in Mammoth By: Andrew Pham, Yvette Abdelmalek, Adam Hendel and Jose Cruz

On the first weekend of February over fifty engineers, friends and family from four YMF branches attended our annual Mammoth ski/snowboarding trip to hit the snowy slopes. Members of the MLAB and OC YMF met up with members from San Diego and Santa Barbara/Ventura area to create one memorable event. Some of the group decided to stay in Mammoth for three nights while the remainder of the group opted for the two day option. Most of the members stayed in condos at Mammoth Estates. After a long day of snowboarding and skiing, we congregated to one condo for a YMF sponsored happy hour. During the happy hour, members had the opportunity to network and share a few laughs with other members of different groups. Everyone had a good time and praised the weekend’s great weather conditions. It was snowing during our stay in Mammoth. Thank you to all the coordinators that worked hard to put this event together. OC YMF also hopes to see the Mammoth snowboarding trip get bigger and better next year. The four Santa Barbara/Ventura YMF branch attendees had a great time at the 2009 YMF Mammoth trip! The fresh powder conditions were perfect for three days of snowboarding, downhill skiing, and cross-country skiing. The branch stayed at Seasons 4 Condominiums with plenty of space and a relaxing jacuzzi. A crazy game of Jenga was played at the Auld (Continued on page 11)

SB/RC YMF— Hockey Night By: Edwin Quinonez

Friday, February 27th, was an exciting night, especially for those of us who had never been to an ice hockey match. On that night, members of the San Bernardino/Riverside YMF visited the newly-built Citizens Bank Arena to watch the Ontario Reign battle the Phoenix Roadrunners. As the game began, so did the brawls, and all this commotion was followed by a series of goals, back and forth, between teams. Adding to the excitement was a raffle for an Ontario Reign Dragon

Dubliner on Friday night. The weekend finale was the joint happy hour event sponsored by OC YMF! Thanks to all those involved. We look forward to seeing all the other branches and sending more members in 2010. The 2009 YMF Mammoth ski/ snowboarding trip was an experience for the 20 attendees. Half of the members joined for a three fun filled days, while others joined the next day, for two. During the first day, Los Angeles members gathered to watch the all anticipated Los Angeles Lakers take on the Boston Celtics. It was fun and exciting moment to bond and get to know one another. The weekend’s weather conditions were highly anticipated by all, and none lost any time in getting up to the Mammoth Mountain. Not all of those who attended the event had snowboard before. There were some first timers, although going to the top of the mountain was not a high priority they still spent it learning and getting ready for the next trip to come. Aside from the snowboarding and skiing action, some spent some time at a local church for sledding. All and all, it was a great event. Thank you to all who participated and joined to make a collection of stories and memories a part of 2009 Mammoth Trip.
