2 September 2016 Dear Reddam House Family Where has this winter gone to? We were warned on arrival in Johannesburg about two things – the cold winter and the traffic. The traffic I believe, the cold winter not so much! Before I put my blankets away I have been warned that there is always a late cold spell that sneaks in at the beginning of September. Difficult to believe when the weather forecast says 30 degrees at the end of next week. We will enjoy the balmy days before the real heat arrives. It was fantastic to see all the colours of spring appear when the students arrived at school. I was so glad to see a couple of posies for the teachers as well. Remember “those” days when each spring day heralded a proud primary school child (girl) sweatily clutching a posy for her class teacher? Teachers also had apples on their desks on a Monday!! The Prep very proudly planted 23 wild olive trees around the car park today to celebrate Arbour Day. Mrs. Brindle and Mrs. Schmidt’s classes held such informative assemblies on the importance of trees and the classes proudly planted some “shade’ which they will get to use in the near future at break time and in the afternoon. I spoke in Assembly about “growing” at Reddam House with the trees and how in Matric the students can look back and say, “I helped plant that tree”. A big thank you to Councillor Candice James for arranging the trees. The Grade 3s raised a huge total of R23 395 from Market Day. A large portion of this will be donated to the Teddy Bear Clinic. This organization assists children who have suffered from abuse. The Grades 3s will also be collecting any ‘pre-loved’ teddy bears during the week leading up to the handover of this donation to the Teddy Bear Clinic. The Grade 3 teachers will let us all know when we can start bringing our teddy bears in to class. The rest of the money raised will be used to purchase some special items for the JP classrooms. Three of our hockey teams have made the play offs in their respective leagues. The U9 boys played against KEPS yesterday and lost 2 -3. The U10 and Open boys play against Bryneven Primary and KEPS respectively next Tuesday, the U9s at home and the open boys at KEPS. We wish them all the best. Head’s Admin No staff is allowed to administer medicine at school, by law. Students may also not bring medicine to school. Mrs. Marelize Muller has resigned as our Music teacher. Mr. Tertius du Plessis will be taking over in the interim. Kind regards Glenn Jones

NEWS FROM THE JP CLASSROOM Our school is a Reggio inspired environment. This means that the classroom and the educational learning activities emerge from the children’s thoughts and ideas. The goal is to foster in children a lifelong passion for learning and exploration. Part of the learning process is connecting the ideas of the children with the environment. The role of the teacher is to guide and partner the children through the project, documenting the process. This is achieved by implementing a few educationally sound principles: 1) The specific layout of the classroom, structures and objects encourage children to be engaged in a learning experience. 2) The learning experience will be more meaningful if it involves their five senses. 3) The documentation of the process should involve the child. A wonderful example of this process is a project that the monkey class was involved in. Our Provocation this term is: My Country, South Africa. The grade 1 children have been learning about the national symbols that make South Africa unique and special. The protea flower really sparked some interest amongst the children, especially when they learnt that they only grow naturally in the Province of the Western Cape. The monkeys really enjoyed looking at the details of the flower. They documented this in their own drawings. Tracy Hill – Grade 1M

REDDAM GIVES BACK GRADE 3 MARKET DAY On Friday 12th August, the Grade 3 children set out early and eagerly to get their stalls ready for our annual Market Day. The JP quad was abuzz with excitement as the first customers, the Stage 5s, arrived with empty shopping bags and full purses! The Grade 3 children suddenly became serious business owners and much bartering, chatting and determined selling was overheard. The market was overflowing with beautifully decorated stalls filled with creative items to buy and delicious treats to eat. The Grade 3s were whisked away into a world of becoming their very own stall owners as they took full responsibility for the collection of money and the giving of change to their little customers. This year the Grade 3s raised a record amount of R25 395,40. A large portion of this will be donated to the Teddy Bear Clinic. This organization assists children who have suffered from abuse. The Grades 3s will also be collecting any ‘pre-loved’ teddy bears during the week leading up to the handover of this donation to the Teddy Bear Clinic. The rest of the money raised will be used to purchase some special items for the JP classrooms.

NEWS FROM THE SP CLASSROOM GRADE 4 ART APPRECIATION Walking back in time……..

The history of art is immense, the earliest cave paintings pre-date writing by almost 27,000 years! This term the Grade 4s explored the early forms of art, from the Stone Age’s cave paintings to Roman Realism. They focused on Egyptian and Roman culture and life. For their practical they had to work in groups to create a sarcophagus. For many ancient cultures the focus of their lives on earth fell on the afterlife, especially the Egyptians. The students had lots of fun with this project. They learned to write their own name in hieroglyphics and drew from their previous knowledge on proportions of a human figure, when making their sarcophaguses. We usually do one group-work project a year as this can be very beneficial in developing certain skills. You might wonder what the benefits of group work are. “More hands make for lighter work.” “Two heads are better than one.” “The more the merrier.” These adages speak to the potential, groups have to be more productive, creative, and motivated than individuals on their own. Group projects can help students develop a host of skills that are increasingly important in the professional world. Properly structured, group projects can reinforce skills that are relevant to both group and individual work, including the ability to:      

Break complex tasks into parts and steps Plan and manage time Refine understanding through discussion and explanation Give and receive feedback on performance Challenge assumptions Develop stronger communication skills.

Group projects can also help students develop skills specific to collaborative efforts, allowing students to...          

Tackle more complex problems than they could on their own. Delegate roles and responsibilities. Share diverse perspectives. Pool knowledge and skills. Hold one another (and be held) accountable. Receive social support and encouragement to take risks. Develop new approaches to resolving differences. Establish a shared identity with other group members. Find effective peers to emulate. Develop their own voice and perspectives in relation to peers.

GRADE 4 ART APPRECIATION

Although many of the grade 4s are still working on their project, take a look at some completed collaborative efforts:
