Special Tribute to Our Champ the Late Muhammad Ali “You have but one life; it soon will be past, what you do for God is all that will last”. Muhammad Ali was an incredible boxer, a philanthropist, a social activist, and a pillar in the African American and Muslim-American community. Although his boxing career became a thing of the past, Muhammad Ali never left the world's spotlight. In a time in which both Black and Muslim Americans were expected to stay quiet, he was defiant and vocal. He provided a much needed image of Islam and Muslims during a time in which the actions of a minority was used to represent the majority. In his life and death, Muhammad Ali unified not only Muslims, but everyone who was touched by his passion, honesty, and strength. Overcoming Adversity: Turning the Tides of Faith The political and social challenges we confront as a minority community are not unique in world history. No story is more relevant and more critical from world history than the story of our Prophet’s (SAW) mission. This session will examine moments from the prophetic story that demanded the extraordinary – not only from him but also from his followers. Its laws grant legal immunity for any actions aimed at suppressing Kashmiri support for self-determination. All available evidence of India’s military activities in Kashmir indicates one thing: that the Indian forces are systematically targeting innocent people in Kashmir—men, women and children. International NGO’s, including Amnesty International, reported the presence of mass graves in Kashmir. More than 3,500 unmarked graves were discovered just in one town of Kupwara. These tactics have no military justification whatsoever. Their only conceived purpose is to terrorize a people into submission. Public policies and systems affect many American Muslims, the criminal justice system, and the failure to equitably fund public education that disproportionately affects the poor and working class amongst us. Our panelists discuss the community response to water shut-offs for Detroit residents, police brutality against African Americans, and the toxic water given to Flint residents. We will also explore organizations that have worked in communities to alleviate hunger and food insecurity. Among them are SMILE for Charity, a food pantry in Passaic NJ, as well as the Islamic Society of Portland Maine, which started a summer feeding program. This typically occurs when an individual’s name is listed in the Terrorism Screening Database (TSDB), and can lead to highly intrusive questioning about one’s speech and conduct, which is protected by the First Amendment. With the TSDB having ballooned to more than 1.2 million records, ordinary citizens with no connection to terrorism are being ensnared. Join us as attorneys and civil rights leaders discuss current litigation to protect the rights of travelers and share strategies for persons who suspect they may be on a watch list, so they can protect their constitutional rights of freedom of religion and speech. This call is not new; fiqh al-muwatanah has been discussed and debated by a number of scholars in the last couple of decades, including Rashid al-Ghannushi, Taha Jabir al-Alwani, Abdul Majid al-Najjar, and Tariq Bishri, among others. Likewise, the “Madinan Charter” has been studied for a while now. This panel would take stock of current scholarship on these topics and propose/chart new ways in the development of fiqh al-muwatanah and notions of citizenship in contemporary Islamic thought. Ebrahim Rasool 4:45 – 5:45 PM  •  Panel 3  •  Room 21 The Fiqh of Citizenship Maqasid Al- Shariah as a Philosophy of Islamic Law: A Systems Approach There is lack of consideration and functionality of the overall purposes and underlying principles of the Islamic law as a whole. Moreover, exaggerated claims of ‘rational certainty’ (or else, ‘irrationality’) and ‘consensus of the infallible’ (or else, ‘historicity of the scripts’) add to the lack of spirituality, intolerance, violent ideologies, suppressed freedoms, and authoritarian regimes. Dominant methodology generally resists learning from other philosophies that did not originate from the Islamic tradition, or else, totally adopts other philosophies that contradict with basic Islamic beliefs. These panels attempted to address these problems based on two theories: theory of the purposes of Islamic law or Maqasid Al-Shariah, and systems theory. Maqasid is proposed as a philosophy and fundamental methodology for assessing and developing classic and current juridical theories. Systems theory is utilized to define a new method for analysis that relies on the systems features of cognition, wholeness, openness, hierarchy, multi-dimensionality, and purposefulness. This session is a follow up to a national Fiqh Forum titled: Reaching Consensus on Organ Donation: A Call to the American Muslim Community. Join organ donation advocates Imam Johari Abdul-Malik and Lesley Compagnone as they discuss the important and germane deliberations that occurred at the Forum and what it might mean for millions of Muslim Americans. Also joining the panel are Gloria and Samuel Shareef; they already know what organ donation means to their Muslim family. Ten years ago their daughter Danielle was killed in a car accident and they made the heroic and selfless decision to donate her organs. Danielle saved the lives of four people that day, something that brings Gloria and Samuel both a sense of peace and a sense of immense pride. They will share their story. This panel will examine the very real and dire shortage of organ donors in this country, and the need to educate communities of all faiths about the opportunity for everyone to be able to give the ultimate gift: the gift of life. This session will discuss specific strategies to help organizations develop the culture of being hospitable. It suggests principles and tactics that translate into a positive experience of every worshiper, guest and visitor; principles that run through the organization and flow from the top leaders to every employee and volunteer in the organization. Speakers: Furqan Ali, Noera Ayaz Facilitator: Maher Budeir Room: DFW Race Matters (Muslim Anti-Racism Collaborative) It has been over two years since the killing of Michael Brown, an unarmed African-American teenager who was shot and killed by Officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, that sparked Black Lives Matter protests across the country and a much deeper discussion into police brutality and institutionalized racism and oppression. Leaders from the Muslim Anti-Racism Collaborative will discuss with participants what anti-oppression work looks like in our communities, how we can meaningfully engage with Black Lives Matter, and how we can build anti-racist cultures in our own Muslim communities. The #HateHurts project was started by CAIR-AZ to document the endless string of hate crimes impacting Muslims, their institutions as well as other communities who have been targeted. This also has been following the harsh upswing on the violence toward the Sikh community, who are often perceived to be Muslims and who are becoming the victims of hate crimes on a frequent basis. This session will feature three speakers, who are approaching this subject from very different and innovative angles. We will discuss with participants the troubling trends that our communities are seeing, how this is impacting our communities, and ways in which we can build solidarity among Muslims, Sikhs, Latinos and other communities of color to fight against hate. Dhuhr Resistance: Combatting Oppression, Inspiring Action “When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty” —Thomas Jefferson While protests, demonstrations and marches are increasingly commonplace strategy for fighting against systemic injustice, there is a lack of clear vision among our community to consider these a successful practice of resistance. Taking notable contributions and efforts into consideration, there is a particular need for intellectual resistance alongside social resistance so that, while our physical presence is known in opposition to injustice, we are also taking to discourse and offering our perspective. Both tools are vital in working to deconstruct the prevailing injustices found in society.
