Refrain:

We wait, O Lord, to hear you knocking on the door. We wait to welcome you into our hearts. We wait with fear and joy for your advent with us. We wait for you to draw us all in - all people on this earth - and lay claim to us. May we be ready to greet our Lord and welcome him into our hearts and homes, for he is our light and salvation. Blessed be God forever. Amen.

Confession and Forgiveness

Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who comes to wake us from sleep, who leads us into the light of grace. Amen.

Let us prepare the way of the Lord by confessing our sin against God and neighbor.

God of all time, we confess that we have not prepared for your merciful reign among us. We ignore our neighbors in need and fail in the labor of justice and peace. In your mercy forgive us. Grant us wisdom to welcome your light and to seek the things that will endure until Christ comes again in glory. Amen.

Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. In Jesus Christ your sins are forgiven and all things are made new. Rejoice in this good news! Amen.

Apostolic Greeting

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

1 The word that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. 2 In days to come the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; all the nations shall stream to it. 3 Many peoples shall come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. 4 He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. 5 O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord!

The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God.

“Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus” -Hobby

Come, thou long expected Jesus, Born to set thy people free; From our fears and sins release us, Let us find our rest in thee. Israel’s strength and consolation, Hope of all the earth thou art; Dear desire of every nation, Joy of every longing heart.

Cathedral Choir Born thy people to deliver, Born a child and yet a king, Born to reign in us forever, Now thy gracious kingdom bring. By thine own eternal spirit Rule in all our hearts alone; By thine all sufficient merit, Raise us to thy glorious throne. Rule in all; hope of all. Come, expected Jesus. Come.

Second Reading

Romans 13:11-14

11 Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; 12 the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; 13 let us live honorably as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. 14 Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God.

Gospel Matthew 24:36-44 The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 24th Chapter.

Glory to You, O Lord.

Jesus said to the disciples, 36 “About that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 37 For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, 39 and they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Then two will be in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. 41 Two women will be grinding meal together; one will be taken and one will be left. 42 Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. 43 But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.”

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

(8:30) (8:30)

Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he decended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of Intercession Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Sacrament of Holy Baptism Evan Richard Rosenfeldt, child of Gary & Shandra Rosenfeldt Sponsors: Ellyn Erickson, Emma Erickson Congregational Sponsors: Mike & Lindsey DiFiore

In baptism our gracious God frees us from sin and death by joining us to the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are born children of a fallen humanity; by water and the Holy Spirit we are reborn children of God and made members of the church, the body of Christ. Living with Christ and in the communion of saints, we grow in faith, love, and obedience to the will of God.

As parents and sponsors, do you present Evan for the sacrament of holy baptism? We do.

In Christian love you have presented Evan for holy baptism. You are entrusted with the following responsibilities: to live with him among God’s faithful people, to bring him to the word of God and the holy supper, teach him the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, place in his hands the holy scriptures, and nurture him in faith and prayer, so that he may learn to trust God, proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and work for justice and peace. As parents and sponsors, do you promise to help him grow in the Christian faith and life? We do.

(congregation stands to join in the confession of faith) I now ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, to reject sin, and to confess the faith of the church, the faith in which we baptize. Do you renounce the devil, the powers of this world, and the ways of sin that draw you away from God? We do.

Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. 7

Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Evan Richard Rosenfeldt, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Evan Richard, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. Amen.

Let us pray. We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give your daughters and sons new birth, cleanse them from sin, and raise them to eternal life. Sustain Evan with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. Amen.

Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

Through Baptism God has made Evan a new member of the priesthood we all share in Christ Jesus, that we may proclaim the praise of God and bear God’s creative and redeeming word to all the world. We welcome you into God’s family. We receive you as a fellow member of the body of Christ, child of the same heavenly Father, and servant with us in the kingdom of God.

Sharing the Peace The peace of Christ be with you always.

And also with you.

In this season of colds and flu, please feel free to share the peace, and not the germs by “rubbing elbows” instead of shaking hands.

You call all nations to walk in your light and to seek your ways of justice and peace, for the night is past, and the dawn of your coming is near.
