First Sunday of Advent Sunday, November 27, 2016 11 a.m. Choral Eucharist

Welcome to Grace Cathedral Welcome to this sacred house of prayer for all people. Those who built this place and care for it love tradition and feel passionate about engaging with what is new. If you look closely you will find images of scientists, reformers, Jewish rabbis and Roman Catholic popes, political leaders, saints, and even an astronaut. We invite you to be part of this joyful community even if your visit is short. You might ask yourself two questions: “What do I need to receive? What do I have to give?” We would be delighted to hear about your explorations. May God bless you on your journey! – The Very Rev. Dr. Malcolm Clemens Young, Dean of Grace Cathedral

• •

If you are new to Grace Cathedral, please introduce yourself and fill out a welcome card so we can be in touch with you. We’re glad you’re here! Join us for coffee and conversation across the plaza in the Chapter House Library after the 8:30 a.m. service or in the Chapter House Dining Room after the 11 a.m. service.

about today’s readings Isaiah 2:1-5, Psalm 122; Romans 13:11-14, Matthew 24:36-44 Reading texts can be found at the end of the service leaflet. Wherever we find ourselves today, many of us are expecting, anticipating, anxiously and nervously awaiting— something. But what is that something? Isaiah heralds a time coming when the temple of Jerusalem will mark God’s ultimate reign, God’s judgments overseeing nations, when the swords of men will be beaten into plowshares and spears into pruning hooks. Paul writing to the early Christians in Rome addresses the urgent anticipation of Christ’s return, admonishing his church to rise from its slumbers—out of complacencies and old habits—preparing for God’s reign of love and justice by “putting on the armor of light.” Jesus describes his return at a time and place when and where least expected, and it is the part of his followers—our part—to keep watch and make ready. But keeping watch and making ready are not simply passive—as we might wait nervously on a bench watching for the last bus. Advent is a season of active beginnings, expectations, fresh opportunities, peppered with the anxieties of the unknown, but filled with hope. We are given new possibilities of finding God’s love in all the unexpected places at the unanticipated times. Now, urgently we are shaken from sleep, roused, awakened to be active in community with God in Christ, witnessing and bringing forth in one another God’s reign of love and justice. This reflection was written by Brandy Bartosh. Brandy is a member of the cathedral congregation, serving as a lector and involved with Women in Community as well as other local arts organizations. She is a current participant in the Education for Ministry program.

Kyrie

Blessed are you, holy and living One. You come to your people and set them free. Gracious God, in your loving heart there is room for everyone—without exception. Give us courage to be so at home in you that we dare make room for others; let your world be a place of delight and homecoming for all creation. Amen. Harold Darke Communion service in A minor

Collect of the Day Presider People

May God be with you. And also with you.

Let us pray. Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Anthem

Charles Wood Choir

O thou the central orb of righteous love, pure beam of the Most High, eternal light of this our wintry world, thy radiance bright awakes new joy in faith, hope soars above. Come, quickly come, and let thy glory shine, gilding our darksome heaven with rays divine. Thy saints with holy luster round thee move, as stars about thy throne, set in the height of God’s ordaining counsel, as thy sight gives measured grace to each, thy power to prove. Let thy bright beams disperse the gloom of sin, our nature all shall feel eternal day, in fellowship with thee, transforming day to souls erewhile unclean, now pure within. Amen. – H. R. Invitation to Communion

The presider invites the people to come forward for Communion. All who seek God and are drawn to Christ are welcome at God’s table. Gluten-free Communion wafers are available at the north altar rail; please ask the Communion minister. For a variety of reasons, it is our custom to consume the Bread and sip the Wine directly from the cup. You are invited to guide the cup. If you choose not to receive either the Bread or the Wine, simply cross your arms over your chest and respond “Amen” when it is presented. Ministers are available for shared prayer for healing in the AIDS Interfaith Chapel at the rear of the cathedral.

In days to come the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; all the nations shall stream to it. Many peoples shall come and say, "Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths."

Matthew 24:36-44

O

n the Mount of Olives, Jesus said to his disciples privately about his coming, “But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, and they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man. Then two will be in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. Two women will be grinding meal together; one will be taken and one will be left.

For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
